Microsoft Split Keyboard with hand controls - Danna

Posted: Jun 17, 2011

Hi Everyone,

Let me introduce myself, my name is Danna Rayton and I am a disabled veteran. I am currently a student at Kaplan University Online for Medical Transcription. I am writing you all due to a blog I read about a person wanting more information for her friend with spina bifida.  I know with having a foot injury from the military I will be have a hard time using the foot pedal myself. TranscriptionGear has a software program that will allow me to program hot keys and is compatible with most of the wave files. It is reasonable priced if you like using hot keys. I also know that they also have a hand control that is also compatible with the software but you have to have a straight keyboard for it to work.

I am currently in English Comp and my project for the class was to think of a big idea or an invention. I don't know how you all feel about the split keyboard but I love mine. How does this fit in with my English project? I am currently working on contacting manufactures and computer technicians to see if there is a way to put the controls into the keyboard right below the space bar. My big idea is a universal keyboard with thumb controls with a universal transcription software. The idea behind this project is to allow anyone to transcribe. My main control group is people and veterans with disabilities that prevent them from using the foot pedal.

My questions for you all is, Do you all prefer the straight keyboard or the split keyboard? If I can get the manufactures to make this keyboard would you be interested in it? My last question is how much would you be able to spend on a keyboard like this?

I've been using a split keyboard for 10+ years and would never go back to a straight one.

I wouldn't spend more than $50 on one.

thank you for your service/nm - anon

First, thanks for your service!!!

and I think this is a super cool idea! i have MS and often wonder what i'd do if i couldn't use my footpedal so knowing there would be another option is nice - i prefer straight keyboard but have never really tried the split and i get stuck in my ways so probably wouldn't - as for cost, if i really needed this, i could see spending around $100 - keeping in mind that i wear keyboards out pretty quickly - but maybe they could do something to make them a little tougher too - i've been looking at one with gel on the keys so maybe that'd be an option? anyhow, this is neat and i'll be cheering you on!!!

I also use a split and am always amazed that people in documentaries not to mention movies use a crammed-together one. If you are a policeman looking for online predators, wouldn't you prefer an ergonomic keyboard? How about the programmers in the movie I just watched, "The Social Network" -- ?

I have a lot of keyboards I bought for $11 each as soon as I knew I liked this model. I wear them out until the keys are blank before I dip into my stock. I bought a $100 Microsoft ergo keyboard a long time ago and the wire pulled out and it was a waste of money.

You can put your feet up and use the mouse to control the audio file right now by clicking on the control bar.

I can't go back - hmmm

I have been using the ergonomic keyboard for more than 8 years now, and I can't even type on a regular one now if I have to. I feel like my fingers are tripping over each other.

Thank you for serving, and best wishes in your endeavors.
