Worth buying text expander? - the curious one

Posted: Jan 08, 2011

I have been working on trying to increase my speed with expanders.  So far I've been using Microsoft word to enter expanders but I'm wondering if that is enough.  I would like to have an expander for blocks of text.  Have any you purchased a text expander program and is it worth it?  I'm shocked at the price of a few of these programs and hesitate to purchase one.

definitely worth the investment - ICManiac

The difference between a text expander and saving abbreviations is that you rarely hear of the TE crashing, whereas it is not uncommon to lose the MS-Word autotext files. If your autotext file in Word gets too large, this will happen. If you add large blocks of text in the autotext file in Word, the sooner you can crash.

Working in WordPerfect for DOS, there was unlimited space to build expansions and it was much easier to build action macros (IMHO) than with MS-Word. Text expanders are virtually limitless in the amount of entries they hold.

Most TE provide an expansion suggestion window to chose your entry from, whereas with MS-Word autotext, you have to memorize all the entries you enter or reference a printed cheat sheet.

With Shorthand, for example, you can import an abbreviation add-on to give you a head start with about 13,000 abbreviations instead of building it yourself. With Instant Text, for example, you run documents you create through it and it builds you a customized TE. If you work as an IC, using MPTools 6 (for example) will automate many actions for you like naming/saving your document and creating an invoice.

A draw back to extensive entries in autotext in MS-Word is that if you change jobs and move to a platform that does not support MS-Word, you lose all your expansions.

Having spent years refining my abbreviation entries and moving to different platforms, I can honestly say that it pays you to invest in a text expansion program rather than trying to build your own from scratch or relying soly on the Word feature.

I primarily use Shorthand and it has a feature that shows you how much time the program has saved you. Typically I have 60 hours a month in saved keystrokes by using the program. I work on several platforms and it is portable to every one of them, saving me time and money over a long period of time.

For SH, you have the option to purchase - on a monthly basis S/M

if that is all you can afford and it is very reasonable.

BOS 3 Worth Buying?
Nov 15, 2010

Is it worth purchasing the BOS 3 before I start testing?  I have looked online to see what others have said, and it seems like most have said they wouldn't spend the money because it's not that different from the 2nd version.  One person said they read the book and saw only 2 changes from the previous edition.  I'm not sure what to do.  I'm worried that I'm going to need the newer version to pass the test.  Just wanted to see what others have don ...

Instant Text - If It Is Worth The Money
Feb 27, 2011

I would like to download the 30-day free trial of Instant Text to see if it is worth the money.  I currently have Bytescribe's Swift Text Expander, which is pretty basic.  Does anyone know if I can have them both installed on my computer at the same time?  If I don't like Instant Text or can't afford to buy it right away after the trial is over, I want to be able to go back to using what I have now. Thanks. ...

Text Expander..HELP!
Jan 18, 2010

I was forced to switch to Windows 7 and I found that Stedmans Smartype was no longer compatible. After shedding some tears, I am searching for a new one. Does anyone have any suggestions about any medical text expanders that are good and work similar to Smartype (that work within WORD). I am currently looking at Speedtype...does anyone have any reviews on that? Thank you!! ...

Text Expander And SR
Aug 03, 2011

In school, we were given the opportunity to have a 4-month trial of Shorthand for Windows. I really enjoyed using this program and had considered purchasing an extended license for it when I become employed; however, I thought of the MT industry heading more towards SR/VR editing and wondered if having a text expander would be useful at all. Any inputs? I'm currently using Word's AutoCorrect as a substitute. ...

Could anyone give me any recommendations for a good general text expander (starting an ASR job in a couple of weeks)?  I use Phrase Express right now, but I don't like some of its limitations and bugs, and customer service stinks.  I'm really interested in hearing from someone who has tried a couple and has a preference and why.   TIA! ...

Hi all.  A new job has just fallen into my lap at a fortuitous time.  My regular job has fallen off drastically recently (we're all familiar with this "syndrome") and I thought I was just stuck.  Anyway, this other job uses WebChartMD platform for transcription and there is no text expander program associated with it.  My current job has a built-in TE, so I haven't had to use a commercial/free product in a long time.  I'm wondering any ya'll have any ...

Text Expander (Rocket Typing)
Sep 17, 2012

I received Speedtype from the school I am going through to learn Medical Transcription. It worked fine and then we started having computer issues and my husband decided to upgrade to a newer version of Windows. To make a long story short, the new version of Windows was put on a separate hard drive in the same computer, but for some reason when I would log into the old hard drive to use Speedtype it would say I no longer had a license and would have to purchase a replacement license....so I did ...

Text Expander With Existing MT Basics Dictionary For Download?
Jan 29, 2015

I'm returning to MT after several years away and working as an IC. As the shortcut/word expanders I used in the past were built-ins or others with dictionaries that are no longer available, I'm wondering if there are any text expanders that come pre-loaded or have existing MT basic word expansions (tp = the patient, hpi - history of present illness, etc.) or that have ones ready for download. Buying American
Oct 19, 2009

Hey, Everybody: In the spirit of solidarity, if we want support for our cause, then we might want to consider supporting other industries in America.  There are places to "Buy American" on the website.  We shouldn't support Big Box Stores that import everything and make a killing as well as treat their employees like chattel.  You know who I am talking about.  If we buy into the theory, "Oh, but it's so inexpensive to go there," then we are just as bad as the tran ...

MQ Buying More Companies.
Oct 03, 2011

Nuance bought WMX, MQ just bought E Trans and I think AllType recently.  Is it going to boil down to a dual between those 2 companies or does Transcend still enter into the equation? Scared to go to any other smaller company, you know they are all targeted to be bought by one of the above.  ...

Why MQ And Nuance Are Buying Everyone Out

so let's open our eyes.  MQ and Nuance are now the 2 biggest companies, and very known fact that they are offshoring everything they can.  I don't have firsthand information, this is just my theory.  they contact hospitals/clinics that they don't have contracts with and underbid them, probably to a point the hospital administrators are doing cartwheels.  As soon as they acquire the majority of the accounts that the smaller companies are now contracted with, suc ...
