Text Expander and SR - NGMT

Posted: Aug 03, 2011

In school, we were given the opportunity to have a 4-month trial of Shorthand for Windows. I really enjoyed using this program and had considered purchasing an extended license for it when I become employed; however, I thought of the MT industry heading more towards SR/VR editing and wondered if having a text expander would be useful at all.

Any inputs? I'm currently using Word's AutoCorrect as a substitute.

I use Shorthand extensively with my VR work. In fact, I hate Shorthand (prefer Word Autocorrect) but since it's compatible with the VR program, I use it. I have a bunch of moves shortcutted. I make about $25-30/hr doing VR.

Thanks for the response! It's good to hear that it can still being utilized with VR :)

Better Alternative to Shorthand - Rob

I gave up on Shorthand a while ago. It is just to dated and the competition has many more useful features.

I tried Typepilot, TypingAssistant and FastType, Brevy, PhraseExpress... You name it.

My recommendation is PhraseExpress, which is the most powerful program of all text expansion tools I tried.

It's free for students and home use.

If you try it, don't miss the text training feature! It can scan your documents for repetitive text and autocomplete that later when you type anything. Unlike all other software I tried, this actually works well.

Have you used it with VR? Do you find the autocomplete more of a curse than a blessing for VR?

AutoCorrect works fine for me - Rob

AutoCorrect works fine for me. PhraseExpress seems to have very sophisticated methods to determine suitable suggestions.

I experienced that it learns your behavior over time (what you choose, what you discard) and adapts that to the suggestions.

Does PhraseExpress cost anything? And does it allow you to copy a Shorthand10 dictionary to it? Also, does it allow autocap for the first word after a period?

Hi, I am Michael from the PhraseExpress Team.

PhraseExpress is free for personal use. We offer an AutoCaps extension on request to customers. It is not embedded in the software as you can customize PhraseExpress for your specific needs. This ensures to keep it lean & fast. Also, AutoCaps has some side-effects that may annoy other customers. That is, why we offer it as an *option*. We are currently preparing import from ShortHand and InstantText. It should be available soon.

Instant Text is commonly used as a text expander with VR, as it allows you to do basic expansions but also incorporate powerful command functions. You can also import your SH file so you can continue using your shortcuts.

Hi all.  A new job has just fallen into my lap at a fortuitous time.  My regular job has fallen off drastically recently (we're all familiar with this "syndrome") and I thought I was just stuck.  Anyway, this other job uses WebChartMD platform for transcription and there is no text expander program associated with it.  My current job has a built-in TE, so I haven't had to use a commercial/free product in a long time.  I'm wondering any ya'll have any ...

Text Expander (Rocket Typing)

I received Speedtype from the school I am going through to learn Medical Transcription. It worked fine and then we started having computer issues and my husband decided to upgrade to a newer version of Windows. To make a long story short, the new version of Windows was put on a separate hard drive in the same computer, but for some reason when I would log into the old hard drive to use Speedtype it would say I no longer had a license and would have to purchase a replacement license....so I did ...

Text Expander With Existing MT Basics Dictionary For Download?

Do You Use An Expander?
Aug 16, 2010

I've been doing transcription for 20+ years and have never used an expander program (such as Instant Text or Shorthand), except for what one can create with the Auto Text/Auto Correct functions in Word. I straight transcribe an average of 180-190 lph.  If I were to purchase an expander program, by how much do those of you who use expanders think I could increase my production? I'm thinking about getting the InstantText free trial and seeing how I do, but then decided to take a l ...
