Good news - and bad news

If it is your first year, working 30 hours I believe you will earn right around 30 hours of PTO for the year. (A full-timer earns 40 hours the first year). While it is good that they will give you some PTO, the "bad news" (to me at least), is that they do not allow UPTO (unpaid time off). As one who came to be a Nuance employee via another company being taken over, I was "shocked" to learn that this is a "perk" that did not carry over to Nuance. That 30 hours will have to cover ANY time you want to be off, including holidays. As you will learn, if the holiday falls on a day you are scheduled, you are expected to work it, unless you spend some of those PTO hours to take it off. So not only do you not get paid for the holiday, you need to spend PTO if you want to take it off. And since we can't take the day off unless we DO spend our PTO, you have a lot of people working on days when there is hardly any work, either because they don't have enough PTO or don't want to spend it. So, yes, though they pay "lines and a quarter" on holidays, often that's figured on nothing, or very little! What you CAN'T say (I now understand) is, "No thanks, I'll just take the holiday (or any other day) without pay." My personal opinion is that if they paid anything at all for folks to be ON CALL in case there are any reports needed on the holiday, they'd have plenty of takers). Instead, they get to offer 24/7 service to the clients they are trying to entice, including holidays, but it's on the backs of the MLS to deliver. The way they handle this, legally, is they will tell you if your queue is empty when it's time to sign on, you can email your TLM and say you will not be working. I don't think you have to spend your PTO then. Unfortunately, however, a little late by then to make holiday plans, and you will receive nothing for having stayed put and discovering that there is no work.

I feel the "no UPTO" policy fails to recognize the highly possible "demographic" of someone who is working part-time for this company, i.e., that this is not their only source of income, that there is either another "person" contributing to the household income, or pension or social security. IMHO, most people with that scenario are going to want more than 30 hours off for the year. I know it's only a matter of time for me.
