TAA Benefits - Bubble bursted

Posted: Jan 13, 2010

Okay.  Let's face it everybody, we don't qualify for the benefits because we are not being laid off.  We are not being laid off because MQ hasn't said anything about laying us off.  I have a call in the HR, and expect to get an answer today, but do you really think MQ is just going to start giving out letters saying we are in fact going to be laid off?  Don't think so.  Everybody, STOP.  Stop hoping for benefits that will retrain us.  I'm thinking that the ones who are continuing to give us hope are higher ups from MQ trying to make fools of us.  How many times do we have to hear that we don't qualify because we are not receiving unemployment benefits before it sinks in?  WE DON'T QUALIFY.  I heard someone on this site say that we should just continue to work and wait until they fire us, fine us, or whatever.....that's the best advice we can take.  I refuse to let anyone make a fool of me anymore.  Until the day I receive a letter from MQ saying that I am going to be laid off I will not even entertain the thought of getting the wonderful benefits we've been heaing about.  Just work ladies and gentlemen.  We have a job to do, so we should just do it.  Thank God we have some income.

I have resigned myself to this same attitude - sm

I have gone to my local one stop for orientation, I have printed out the petition and given it to state department, I have told three of my local TAA benefit coordinators about the conditions at my work, pay cut, running out of work, work being sent overseas. All have given me the same answer. I have to be on a lay-off list. I even had a conversation about the new "prelayoff" status supposedly going into effect late 2009, still its redundant at this point. I am blue in the face and still typing. Just waiting for the hammer to drop. For the life of my, I do not know why MQ was petitioned in the first place if we cannot take advantage of it to prepare ourselves for that inevitable hammer.

Received my TAA paperwork . - Please see post below!!!

That sounds familiar - MT

There is only one thing that you should never say to an MT and that is

"Just work ladies and gentlemen. We have a job to do, so we should just do it. Thank God we have some income."

MTs work until they are in pain every day, make sacrifices socially that no one should have to make, listen to their children grow up from the next room and would love to have some income for what they do.

Fact is, you are wrong.
All Medquist employees qualify for UI right now.

You wait for your letter, maybe you will get to write it.

hey MT... - say waaaaat

[ In Reply To ..]
Maybe you could explain your comment that "All Medquisst employees qualify for UI right now."

I still have work, hours have not been cut, and I work part-time. How do I qualify for unemployment?

partial UI - approved

[ In Reply To ..]
You are one of the lucky, so far. I am getting UI, even though I clock in for 8 hours a day, I don't have work part of that time, so my hours haven't actually been cut formally speaking, but I was approved based on lack of enough work, not the clock in/out times.
PS re UI - approved
[ In Reply To ..]
And my TAA application is in process (MN).
MT probably works in HR!!! nm - MT2020

WOW, you are psychic - MT
[ In Reply To ..]
That is what I am going to retrain for through the TAA program!
how did you cheat the system then? - HUH?
[ In Reply To ..]
Dont understand how you can qualify for unemployment and still work 8 hours a day.

Post back if application for TAA actually gets approved! Anyone can fill out a form, does not mean they will approve it.
Still not understanding. - say waaaaaat
[ In Reply To ..]
You clock in for 8 hours a day, but there is not enough work for 8 hours? Then why are you clocked in?

And if umployment approved you, that would mean you did not have enough work to complete your shift.

Not everyone at the Q is out of work. Some of us still have work, for now.

So explain again if your hours have not formally been cut, how do you qualify?
Explaining - MT
[ In Reply To ..]
If you are confused about anything, I suggest you contact your supervisor.

Those of us who are not confused know that your supervisor will not be calling you back.
why wont supervisor call back? - get to the point
[ In Reply To ..]
Can you just come out and say what you want to say?

Obviously I am confused!

So basically, you just stopped working, filed for unemployment, said that there was no work, the Q did not fight it and now you get TAA benefits?
get to the point - okay
[ In Reply To ..]
So basically, Medquist said they could not find enough US based MT,went out and recruited Indian MT, made US MT train Indian MT and outsourced 80% of the work to India and now US MT get TAA benefits. Sound about right?

OMG I got UE, NJA, then got a new job. No questions. - Bunion

It does not matter. NJA, no questions asked, then got new job and no more UE. Do not give up.

I'm not in HR, not in administration, just a poor schlep working her fingers off alongside you. I've never heard any higher-ups talk like me. They're all Stepford Wife stereotypes. I'm going to be a drone zombie going along with the crowd, not looking for a Plan B and be prepared. Just shut up and work reminds me of the movie, "The Mummy," where the walking dead shuffle along moaning "Imhotep-Imhotep-Imhotep." I just can't fake it and do that. Sure I've got my TAA application in the works. I wish I could tell you more, but on behalf of all of the unbelievers, naysayers and other MTs in need, I'll ask my rep how the other states are handling this and keep posting to help everyone. I'll still be working, grab any supplemental income through UI or training that I can get in the meantime while still bringing home the bacon, however lean, and then stand up and say to the Q "Take this job and . . ."

Good for you Poodlepassion. You are awesome!! - Thanks for keeping us posted.

Because of all what is happening, TAA and this new HIPPA law crap, it has given me courage to get out of this no for good, unappreciated, sweat job, low pay minimum wage, crappy profession and go back to school to better myself because I AM WORTH IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyone from Michigan here? They are telling me different???? - Just wondering

[ In Reply To ..]
I am entitled, as far as everyone says, but the state says no! Just curions please?
Most UE workers think you earn salary by the hour - -- do not understand MT income based on production
[ In Reply To ..]
MTs earn income based on production which is based on work availability or the number of jobs available during 8-hour shift. MTs earn income from production and are paid on an hourly basis if and only if submitting PTO. If you have no PTO remaining, then you do not earn an hourly wage. For myself, my PTO hourly wage just dropped to minimum wage for my state. I explained in detail how my pay works. My worker had to be told like reciting the ABC's how MT pay works. Once she understood how having NO JOBS AVAILABLE (NJA) meant me not working and being unable to earn income during my shift, she had a complete 100% turnaround. It was up to me to completely inform the worker about my MT pay situation. I also explained that MQ now outsources 80% of the work after being bought by CBAY -- reason fo NJA. I told her how to find this information online. She then asked her supervisor. I was told that they included an explanation about how I receive my income/salary based on work availability through MQ's system. Although I do not get a UI check every week, it depends on how much my income fluctuates due to not having work, which has been a lot lately. After several weeks, I got approved and I got TAA.

The UE workers DO NOT understand the process. You have to explain how you receive your MT income. This is because most people on unemployment work 80 hours a week and are paid a fixed hourly rate for those 80 hours. That is not how MT pay works at MQ. You can always go online like I did and apply. Once I applied, I made an appointment to go in to discuss the claim to find out what might happen. The worker told me I probably would have been denied had I not came in for an appointment and explaing about how my MT pay works. I am not paid hourly and making money even though I'm supposed to be working 80 hours per week. It is critical to explain what the NJA means to MT income and pay. Yes, MQ MTs are supposed to work 80 hours per week, BUT if NJA then not only do MTs not work but also receive no income, unless using PTO.

Try filling out application online, then make appointment to see a local worker. Do not let someone on telephone stop you from going in to your office. Also, don't listen at the negative posts that TAA is not available for MQ MTs. This is just not true.

Just received my paperwork for TAA. - Request for determination of entitlement.

It states to fax this form when completed. The form asks for name, address, SS#, blah, blah, blah.

Oh, here we go! Asks if I have worked for any other employer since leaving the trade-certified employer?

Next question. Have you filed for Unemployement insurance benefits? Are you currently receiving UI benefits?

Next question. REASON FOR SEPARATION: CHECK EITHER LACK OF WORK OR CHECK OTHER AND EXPLAIN.

Next question: LAST JOB TITLE: DATE OF SEPARATION. ARE YOU TOTAL SEPARATION OR ARE YOU STILL WORKING PART-TIME. NAME THE STATE WHERE SEPARATED.

Next info. Letting me know that they may release information related to my participation with the Trade Adjustment Assistance to a local provider, facilities and/or previous TAA-certified employer for their use in determining my continued eligibility for TAA/TRA benefits, and blah, blah, blah.

That is it folks. So, WHAT THE HECK IS PARTIAL SEPARATION?

partial - xyzzzz

[ In Reply To ..]
The UI folks said it is when you experience a drop in wages or hours worked through no fault of your own, but are still working for that company. Like when we get NJA, can't make our line count, etc.

TAA PAPERWORK - nudder question

[ In Reply To ..]
So, if you have a second job, you also do not qualify for TAA?

Thanks Q for forcing me to get a 2nd job due to no work a year ago, now I will not qualify!

Lovely.

Loss Of Benefits

Okay, I may be dense, the rest of you may have figured this out long ago!  Many times I see comments here about people who cannot get enough work.  Well, at my company, if there is a low volume of work and you cannot meet your line count you are placed on part-time status and cannot regain full-time status until you have met your commitment for 90 days.  Yes, you lose your benefits....your health insurance, paid holidays, dental/vision, etc.  Well, heck, look at the money the ...

Health Benefits

As June is approaching us, I suggest that anyone who has health benefits appeal to upper management (I emailed Vern and got a decent reply) to please consider better benefits.  They way they are now, if you are a single parent with young children, this plan could be catostrophic in a way worse than if you had no benefits or job to speak of.  I am not single nor have young children but am currently in debt of over 2,000 to a health provider.  I will probably still be paying it off when we use ...
