We have allowed them to redefine a "line." - Unreal.

Posted: Dec 19, 2014

I woke up this morning and the thought that has been swirling crystalized somewhat. Ladies and gentleman, those of us on platforms with "adjustments" have allowed them to redefine what a "Line" is. A line is no longer characters typed (including or not including spaces) divided by 65, which is an industry standard. We have allowed them to make how many characters equal a line a lot more than that, i.e. 5% more, 12% more, etc. !!! We are being penalized for working smarter not harder! If I was on an unproductive platform, I'd find a job with a better platform, or they should be paid more for those working conditions. Either that or eventually those places with "clunky cumbersome" platforms would have to upgrade their platforms!!! Why should we be brought DOWN to their level and not them brought UP to ours? Wait, that would mean one less Porsche for the CEO. Are we insane? That is equivalent to other employees saying sure, cut my pay 5% or 10%. An example would be: Just because we at Pizza Hut have better ovens and can make more pizzas in an hour than Dominos, we Pizza Hut workers don't need to make the salary we agreed to. Oh, and by the way, you did not put enough mushrooms on the last three pizzas out of the twenty pizzas you cooked today, so we are only paying you minimum wage! The time for action is here. I do believe the underlying goal is to get rid of US MTs. Let's give them what they want. For our health and sanity, we need to move on anyway. Yes, MT will be around for awhile longer, but when the facilities don't really care, most doctors don't really care, why oh why would we smart ladies and gentleman sit and worry about whether we put a comma or a semi-colon (in most instances) or write "7" or "seven"? I mean, have we really let them beat us down that far mentally? I am not saying that on occasion with this new "plan," decent income is not possible, it is. As I sat and anguished last night about sending a 120 line report to QC and how I potentially cost myself money, I thought how stupid is that! I sent it. QA filled in the blank. I can live with myself knowing I did the right thing. However, how ludicrous is THAT? Time to get out of the comfort zone ladies and gentleman. I will be gone by February 1, 2015. Think about it. Get out. Now. Just do it.

TRUE VERY SAD - Cindy

[ In Reply To ..]
True, all this is very sad. VR was supposed to benefit us transcriptionists just like the macros or normals we used to store in our computers did for us. It was not meant for us to get out line rate cut in half. But that is how they turned it around on us. If I was typing for my own business and used VR I would still charge 8 cents or more per line.

Yes, there is a world out there where you are not paid by every character you type. And believe me I worked CNA for a couple of years after doing transcription for 30 and it feels great to get paid by the hour, and almost feels unbelievable that that is possible, so used to get paid by production. That's ok. Soon the QA and the TSMs will be typing because we will all be gone. I'm gone soon also. I know a lot of the people at Nuance are leaving as soon as they get their first paycheck of chickenfeed.

Should It Be Allowed (they Just Did This To Me)
Feb 02, 2013

I sent a dictation to QC for blanks because the dictator was saying wrong words, and mis-speaking.  I just got about 7 major errors for things which the dictator changed mind, slurred, and that is why I put it in the pending with questions to begin with.  So, is this the correct policy. Put in the blanks, question certain words and then still get in trouble for this as major errors? I did not put through to client, questioned each, put difficult dictator in box, please help and then I ...

May 25, 2013

As I watched my family leave and our dog to head to our relatives cabin in the next neighboring state last night, I cleaned the house and did some laundry and worked my last hour typing.  This morning I am ready to work my 8 hours and what happens???  NO WORK.  You think I would be used to this by now after all these years, but now I am really ANGRY!  I have done this when it is Easter, Thanksgiving, Fourth of July, etc.  That is it.  No more will I ...

What Have We Allowed To Happen To Our Profession?
May 22, 2014

Ladies and Gentleman MTs -- Twenty years ago I earned 7 cpl at my job as an IC MT, was treated fairly by my employer, paid weekend and holiday bonuses, as well as quan/qual bonuses.  Although hours were long, worked most holidays and weekends, I earned around $45,000/yr, about $35.00 an hour and was free to choose the hours that I worked.   Could we all just take some control over our professions, please?  Yes, being an MT is a profession.  How much specialized education, t ...

I guess you can no longer buy full licensed copies of MS Word on a disk ???  I see you can get MS Word 2013 in downloadable form, starting with a "trial" and then I guess you end up paying per year or month?  So, is this acceptable or do we HAVE to have it on disk? ...

More Blanks Allowed Before Sending To IQA
Jan 13, 2015

Ok, got E-mail about changing when we have to send reports to IQA and when we can just ship on. Increasing number of blanks, etc.  Anyone understand how this is going to impact our 10% or less criteria?  I may be crazy, but sounds like we might be getting a break here. Guess we have been shipping too much to IQA. When in doubt we don't want to lose money with a wrong guess. ...

Is Cherrypicking Allowed At Your Company? Is This The Norm?
Aug 26, 2011

I have been with my company for many years and have liked the account I am on until the past 3 months.  Three months ago, they hired on 3 new MTs and now suddenly all the easy doctors disappear from the queue first, even if there are other reports out of TAT.  Warnings have been given by account manager, but only 2 days later, the cherrypickers are back at it.  I am now getting stuck with a majority of the harder docs that no one wants to do and have watched my pay ...

Here's A Question, Serious Answers, NO Fighting Allowed...
Dec 24, 2011

Since I made my lines hours ago lol, and I'm messing around trying to let someone else make their lines, I've been roaming around, reading back posts.  And I swear to you all I'm not trying to cause trouble, start drama or pick fights, I just have a very serious question. For the MTs who are "struggling" or not making it, etc and to all the MTs who are sure it's a "dying field" or it's "already dead".  What keeps you in the MT field?  I know jobs are real ...

Anyone Know Why Semi-private Hospital Rooms Are Still Allowed Under HIPAA?
Oct 06, 2010

I work for one of the big MTSOs, take annual HIPAA training, and know I am subject to fines or discharge for disclosing someone else̢۪s medical info, either intentionally or accidentally such as via an incorrect C/C. I am therefore baffled as to why hospitals are still allowed to put patients in semiprivate rooms where HIPAA rules just seem to go out the window. For example, just yesterday I returned from a 23-hour overnight after an outpatient procedure at a well-regarded acute-care hos ...

VR Line Count - What Kind Of Line Production Should I Shoot For
Mar 24, 2011

I was just hired on with a company to do strictly VR. I am only going to be working part time so about 4 hours a day. I am wondering from those who do VR what kind of line production should I shoot for in 4 hours of work? What is the normal VR line count for part time? I have read that most who are working full time or 8 hours a day are doing more than 1,000, even 2,000 a day. The company I will be working for wants a minimum of 10,000 lines in a payperiod which the lady said even with part time ...

Gross Line Versus 65 Character Line

Line Rate For 65 Printable Character Line
