Does anyone remember when, and why, an MT line became a 65-character line instead of a gross line? And what company was responsible for this, if any?

It was the former AAMT who came up with it. Who knows what their rationale is, but I suppose they considered it the "most honest" billing method.

AAMT is correct and I believe they later came up with the concept of the 'visible black character' and not paying for spaces. I can't tell you how many times I've been tempted to type a document, then go back and delete all the spaces! Pay me for just the VBC and that's all you're gonna get! :-)

Back in the stone ages of MTSOs, I worked for a company who counted bytes, not characters and divided by 60. Those were the gravy days! Lines added up very fast. Good times!

I was interviewing a prospective client once, and when we got to the compensation portion, he told me that he did not want to pay for spaces. I looked him right in the eye and told him that I would just leave them out if that was his preference. His mouth fell open for a minute, and then he said he would pay for them. Of course, that was in the good days before all the doctors' offices were required to go on the EMT and then decided to just type their own notes. That income source is really drying up now!

i remember when i first heard of the 65 ch and sp line, i laughed out loud, as our lines were twice as long, when transcription was in-house, and a proper sized letter, report, was the norm.

Anyone know if 5 cents per gross line is good or not? Better than 10 cents a 65 character line?? When a company states a line rate for a "65 printable character line" does that mean they do not pay for spaces? I saw an ad saying they pay the highest in the business, which was about 8.5 cents for 65 printable character line. That to me says without spaces, as it is not a printable character, so that would be a horrible rate surely not one of the best in the business. Wonder why there is no respect for our thumbs !!!! ...

Considering taking a new job but wondering if I'd be getting screwed. Owner is offering 4.5 cpl for a gross line, and they use the line count function in Word to count their lines. On the sample test document they have their margins stretched about as far as they can go. I make 8 cpl right now on a 65 character line, typing in Word, and by the formula I'm paid by now it looks like 4.5 cpl would be almost half of what I'm making now for the same document. Ow ...

I have been using MPCount for several years but recently upgraded to a new laptop & it will not work on it - incompatible. I tried out their new trial version of MPTools but it does not count my gross lines the same & I would be losing more $ than I would like with it. I do have some benefits with the VR job, but not good enough to even take them on right now. After 3 months I will start accruing PTO up to 12 days a year. Is it worth it? I was thinking having benefits would be really nice for once in the last 16 years, but now I am thinking it may not be worth the struggle to make a living on VR. I was just hired on with a company to do strictly VR. I am only going to be working part time so about 4 hours a day. I am wondering from those who do VR what kind of line production should I shoot for in 4 hours of work? What is the normal VR line count for part time? I have read that most who are working full time or 8 hours a day are doing more than 1,000, even 2,000 a day. It's beyond me why anyone would do VR for 0.03 per line or straight transcription for 0.07 per line, even 0.08 stinks. Are we all that desperate to let these companies get away with not paying a living wage? It's outrageous. As long as MTs send their resumes to these companies and apply for these positions, the longer it will take to bring us back to the pay level we deserve. Is this correct? I type 70,000 characters a day. I am paid by the 65 character line so I would divide 70,000 by 65 to get 1076, then multiple that by pay per line, say $.10 and get $107. If this is not correct then what is the formula? And what is the average number of lines per day? Thanks so much for the info. ...

Well, just failed another test and on the very first part to beat all! It was multiple choice grammar, punctuation, and terminology. I cannot be this dumb or are the standards sooooo high?
