MModal laying off part-timers. Is this a new trend?

I just read on MQ Central that as a part-timer you are eligible for "partial" benefits. I had asked on this board before if part-timers were eligible for health insurance and was told no. Question: I was hired by MModal to begin a part-time evening job doing a cardio account on the Cornerstone platform.
