Interesting article about Nuance - Just me

Posted: Mar 22, 2012

I was reading an email about current trends in the industry and it talked about Nuance's acquisition of Transcend and how Nuance had acquired 43 companies since being in business, gaining some of those acquisitions by bullying competitors with lawsuits and then buying them out. Then I stumbled across this article on Bloomberg Businessweek. It's a little dated (May 2011) but quite interesting, especially the quote from the Dave Grannan, CEO of Vlingo: "Competing with Nuance is like having a venereal disease that's in remission." I can definitely say I am not proud to be  working for such a company.

I thought that was a funny, if not odd, quote from Vlingo CEO, so had to dig a bit. Never heard of them. It doesn't sound like they are involved in MT at all, but apparently Nuance has sued Vlingo mulitple times over patent rights with speech recognition used in phones, etc. So I guess Vlingo is just waiting for the next flareup. I didn't see what the rulings on those lawsuits were, so I don't know if Nuance had a legitimate claim or not.

If you click on the link at the bottom of the post it will take you to the article that explains everything. Vlingo was a speech recognition company (competitor to Nuance) that they were suing for patent infringement (a baseless lawsuit from what I have read). Vlingo eventually sold out to Nuance because they couldn't afford to continually fight them in court. Nuance has sued many competitors over patent infringements and never won a single lawsuit. They have acquired at least 4 companies that they have filed lawsuit against. It seems like they are using lawsuits as a bullying technique to eliminate/acquire their competitors. Just tells you something about the way Nuance operates.

One of the Vlingo CEOs used to be the CEO at Nuance...Nuance had a legitimate lawsuit against them...again, dig deeper for more info....also, they may have acquired all those companies, but not all of them are regarding healthcare....they have their hand in a lot of industries, not just transcription....I for one am HAPPY to work for such a strong company. That does not necessarily make them bad.,just smart.
Well stated. I'm also glad to be working for a stable company. - no message

Lawsuits aren't bullying techniques. Courts do step in when companies or individuals use lawsuits for bullying or extortion. You may want to research and read the cases before making judgments and accusations. Nuance has filed lawsuits for patent infringement, most being settled because the other party had infringed, whether knowingly or not. Yes, someone can unknowingly or unwittingly infringe on a patent or trademark brand, it happens all the time. When a company finds out that this has occurred they must get the other party to stop. If they do not take steps to the infringement, and the other party makes further infringements in the future, a lawsuit at that late date can go against the original patent or trademark holder simply because they neglected to initially protect their patent when they first became aware.

Doesn't surprise me in the least. These big companies all seem to be bullies. Apple is known for using cheap offshore labor and has HUGE profits, they could easily keep the work here and still make a very nice profit. Big companies are known to use such tactics to squash competition (what small to mid size company can afford to pay lawyer fees for fighting such lawsuits?). I jumped from Nuance to a smaller company, just holding my breath they won't but this one out too!

I think it is very interesting how a company will make you jump through hoops to "prove" you are an independent contractor but still want you to use an employee based punch in/out system. Jan 28, 2014

Been reading the business perspective of what will happen when (not if - when) minimum wage is increased, and 99% of companies who employ low income workers say that will be the day they lay off most of their employees, or have to close their doors altogether.  Not that I expect MModal to ever "close their doors", but that does leave open the other alternative for a huge layoff as the need to "supplement" employees who aren't earning minimum wage, or who don't meet their ridiculou ...
