What are the best schools for THOROUGH medical transcription training? - ncpinkpanther

Posted: Mar 27, 2011

I'm researching to find out which is the best online school to choose for medical transcription training.  I want to do the training right the first time, so I want to make sure I choose the right one.  They all seem to claim to be the top in the country and to have the most successful graduates.  I don't mind paying for what I'm getting, but I want to make sure I'm not paying for fluff.  I was hoping to get some insight from those who have already been through training.  Any comments would be appreciated. Andrews, M-TEC, and Career Step, - in that order

I haven't been through training, but I've heard this enough times over the years to fully believe this is an accurate assessment of the best programs. These are the only 3 that I would recommend.

And they range in price in the same order, from high to low, so you will need to balance out the reputation (which includes after-completion job help) with the cost, of course. You get what you pay for, as with most anything else.

I have been in the biz for over 40 years (retiring in a few months) and I would make the following recommendations:
1. The top is Andrews.
2. Second to top is M-TEC.

I personally would not recommend Career Step because I think you need real live instructors rather than answer keys. That is just my take on it. In today's competitive market, you need to give yourself as much advantage as you can. You cannot know what you do not know. I have never known an Andrews grad who could not get a job. (And no, I am not now and have never been, associated with Andrews, nor do I know their staff.) I just see the quality of MTs they produce.

I would avoid at all costs the "institutes" and "training programs" that advertise in the pages of women's magazines. Sure, they are much cheaper, but you frequently get nothing of use from them and many of them are actually on the "do not hire from" list of MTSOs. (Yes, such lists DO exist.) Many of them are outright matchbooks. Others are not much better. If you are on a tight budget, it is ESPECIALLY important to avoid throwing your money on a cheap school that promises you the world. We all know the drill--you can make 60K a year while sitting at home in your jammies--NOT!

You want to ask if a program uses the SUM program. If they do not, keep looking.

Good luck!

I attended a seminar last night for an online medical transcription school.  The school providing the information was At-Home Professions out of Ft. I've been an MT for 35 years.  I'm in my 60s.  Every non-MT job ad I read has "mandatory" skills I don't have.  I don't want a job where I'm on my feet 8 hours a day.  I have no money for school.  I could only manage a few hours per week in class.  Any ideas, anyone? ...

Medical Coding Schools
Jun 06, 2012

I have been researching schools & certifications for coding and getting a bit overwhelmed! I have pretty much decided on an online course but now to decide which one? From reading the forums i hear Andrews college is pretty good but this will cost $3800 and take about a yr. Another option i have is thru Ivy Tech which will be covered by FAFSA grant. I also checked into the classes directly thru AAPC. Is anyone familiar with any of these online classes that could give me some input? I am lean ...

What Allied Medical Schools Told Me... Is THIS True?
May 12, 2010

A representative from Allied Medical Schools told me this:   Our program is designed to prepare you for not only the career, but also for the AAPC’s CPC-A exam which is the first certification you can obtain as a new medical coder. The AHIMA certification requires a degree program that usually takes about 2 years to complete and to pursue that, you must already have your CPC-A certification. Some employers may ask for a AHIMA cert but there are plenty of employers that do not and th ...

Online Schools For Transcription
Aug 04, 2012

I have been an MT for 4 years now and actually completed all my training at a local technical college.  Now, I find myself in a position to mentor some young Military Spouses regarding medical transcription and what online schools would be the better choice for completing a MT certification. I am not that familiar with the online options, so I was hoping to hear the good, the bad, and yes even the ugly about what is out there.  Our spouses have funding of around $4000 and ...

MT Training - Want To Return To Transcription
Feb 08, 2011

Hi there!!  I was a medical transcriptionist eons ago - learned on an IBM Selectric typewriter while listening to a dictaphone machine.  I was quite good, if I may say so myself.  However, lots of years have gone by, I became an EMT, then an LPN, but now I'm retired.  I want to return to transcription and need the advice of experienced MTs.  It seems smart to take a course online but I really don't know which course you all would recommend.  HELP!!  I need the most comprehensive ...

Medical Transcription At Home To Become A Medical Scribe?
Jan 20, 2015

Has anybody left medical transcription at home to become a medical scribe?  I have an opportunity to do so but there aren't any scribes currently in my area and I don't know anyone who has worked as a scribe before.  The scribe position starting pay is almost double what I make as an MT per hour so it is very tempting, I just don't know much about it. ...
