Training-----------Best? - dreammove

hello... I'm looking for opinions and advice from MTs as to where I should get my MT training.  Where do most MT companies like their MTs to have their MT training?  Thank youSmile

You're kidding, right? Why in the world do you want to do this? nm - ncmt

Why such a sarcastic answer - see message

[ In Reply To ..]
There was no reason whatsoever for a reply like that.

NO, she was NOT kidding. If you can't answer her question why post at all.

Maybe you are not happy doing what you do, but there are a lot of us out here who love this field. To try and put discouraging remarks out for people looking for information is just not nice.

I'm being "negative." Go ahead and spend thousands of dollars. You will get a job a week before graduating making $50,000+, and get to work at home at the hours most convenient for you, holding your baby on your lap. Go for it.

You're the first person who told me I would land a $50,000+ job a week before graduating. What planet are you from? You also said I would be holding my baby on my lap... although I've never had children, I am taking the time right now to reply to you, an abusive "baby". Go away with your anger. I don't want your abuse. Who needs that abuse when one is sincerely looking for good, experienced feedback.

Dreammove, good for you for standing up for yourself! If you want an MT career, you should go for it. I would recommend two schools; in order of preference they are: 1. Andrews, 2. M-TEC. No matter what school you finally choose, be certain that they use the SUM program. A SUM-based education is what many employers look for. Don't let the negative bitter folks get you down. Like any other field, MT is great for some, not for others. You sound like a person who knows what she wants, and I would encourage you to try. My best suggestion to you would be to call the Andrews School and speak with Linda Andrews. I do not know her, but have heard wonderful things about how helpful she is. Andrews is sort of like the Harvard of MT schools. And, BTW, I make 30 bucks an hour doing MT, so yes, it can be done--and IS being done--by many people. We are in a tough economy right now, and the MT world is doubly impacted because not only are hospitals and docs pinching pennies, but some are offshoring. However, if you are determined, I am sure that there will be a good placed for you. Hang in there, keep your chin up, do your homework, get into a good school, and enjoy yourself! Good luck.

No company in America wants training done in India. If that was an attempt at humor it was bad.

My company wants me to train the MTSO in India how to do my job. Let's see, I have to send them lists of Trade and Generic drugs and the mg dosages and a shortened version of the DSM IV and, and, and, Let's see. They outsourced my position and others' positions and I am in trouble for not "helping them enough." This, of course, is all while I am doing the editing on their pitiful transcription, taking over when they failed a doc who was going on medical leave so I have to transcribe all that work and fix and edit the huge mess of what they did try to transcribe. My supervisor tells me I am wrong, that the doc can't dictate and that the MT and the QA both heard the work. The doc and me must be wrong. 9 years down the tubes. Oh well. Am getting "let go" on Monday.

Is your opinion regarding training in India supported by your personal research? or supported by your storehouse of uncaring, sarcastic abuse? Don't bother answering these two questions. I'll do fine not hearing from you again.

I received my training at a local college. - see message

[ In Reply To ..]
It took about 1-1/2 years. About a week after graduation I landed a job. That was about 14 years ago.

What I would do is contact the local hospitals in your area and speak to them about positions and ask what their requirements are. That might help steer you in the right direction. I think a lot of companies where you work at home might want you to have some experience that way you are not so lost being on your own. But I would check with the local hospitals, doctors offices/clinics, etc. You never know where you'll get a break.

P.S. - please do not let the poster that answered back with a snotty reply of "your kidding" dissuade you from achieving your goal. There are always going to be a few sour grapes in the bunch, but know that a lot of us really love what we do, and try to give encouraging advice to those who are interested in this field.

I wish the best of luck to you.

Please reseach this before you give any money to - Paige

a school saying this is a decent occupation. It can be worded that this field is changing but in my opinion, that's a way of dressing it up nicely when this occupation is dying. And as far as the person who responded about the India training, since many of the jobs are now there, she's right.

There's a lot of truth in sour grapes. Something made them sour.

I think I should leave this website. I just visited this message board and this website for the first time today. I came seeking helpful advice and guidance. One person writes to me saying this is a dying occupation, another person gives me sarcasm, another person says training in India is the MT training most MT companies want from their MTs. To all of you who have written to me with a caring motivation: Thank you. To all the others who do not care: Think back on this day when one day you want advice and help from someone.

medical records, voice recognition, and so much work being sent to India it is really really hard to make a living. As far as sour grapes....most of the MTs are bone weary from working 10-12 hours a day and only being paid 7-8 cpl. We are so frustrated and down that this wonderful and used-to-be fun occupation has gone down the drain. There are hardly any decent companies left and very, very few that will hire newbies. I had a wonderful job at a wonderful company but the hospital decided they wanted to send the work to India to get it done cheaper and would not renew their contract with the company I worked for. I have been looking for a job for 6 weeks now. Most MTSOs want to pay you peanuts and not what you are worth. Yes, it does make the "worst" come out in us after all we have strived for and to see it sent to India or worse - the work going to voice recognition where we are supposed to do twice as much at half the pay. So, until you really know what this occupation is all about dont jump the gun and accuse people. And above all - dont believe what these MT schools are telling you....they are just trying to stay in business.
yochana - good point
[ In Reply To ..]
That is a good point about the MT schools wanting to stay in business. You wonder where all the spin about the MT profession is coming from, and why there are so many newbies with really odd ideas about earning potential and working conditions. Hmm... Someone is trying to sell a curriculum, maybe. I feel uneasy about discussing this on the newbie board though-- isn't this for encouragement only? Will take it up on main board.

It's certainly a dying field for those with poor skills - No doubt about it

[ In Reply To ..]
Things are changing. They always have and always will. It's more dramatic now because of our nation's poor economy, lack of jobs of any sort whatsoever, and the fact that technology has changed and is changing everything we do.

That said, there are very talented MTs who continue to do well and after all of the changes, the very best will still be needed. We may not even be called medical transcriptionists in 10-15 years. Our specific duties will no doubt change. There's nothing new about that. We used to type on typewriters with 5 carbon copies in different colors.

Most people should not do medical transcription. Unfortunately, this is a field that let anyone and everyone get in and call themselves MTs. That is changing and that is a good thing.

Local college - s/m

[ In Reply To ..]
My community has a wonderful, well-equipped and professionally staffed technical college. I inquired about their medical coding program last year and took a few courses. At that time, I asked why they weren't teaching MT. The person responded that they no longer offered MT because they couldn't, in good conscience, recommend it. She said that the college had determined that MT would not be a viable profession in the future, so they dropped it.

I've been an MT for 20+ years and am still holding on, but I'm certainly making different plans for the future! Too bad... I've loved every minute of it. :(

I'm sorry that the OP had such a bad experience with her question. Last year at my (onsite hospital) job, there was an intern who came in for MT training. She was completing the course at a local community college. I was surprised that the college was still offering that curriculum, and quite concerned about this young lady's future job prospects. For a long time I had the thought that I would take her aside and share my concerns, and ask if she might consider switching to another curriculum-- just to let her know that MT might not be the most attractive field for a person in her early 20s. I never did have that little talk with her-- figured she could find out for herself. And who wants to tell a person that she made the wrong choice, once she is nearing completion of her classes? Fortunately, she found work easily enough in a restaurant after she got her MT certificate. I am still a bit surprised at the college though. The local hospital has the typical demographics for a long-term MT department-- middle-aged and older women. Several have retired in the last year or two, and they are not being replaced (I asked-- I myself wouldn't mind working there again!). It looks like they will not lay off anyone, just let retirement take its course, and maybe hire just a few to replace the many. In the next 5-10 years, as more MTs retire, and the new ones have been thoroughly discouraged, the demand for MTs might begin to rise again.

[ In Reply To ..]
I am a small MTSO and I would only hire a newbie from Andrews or MTEC. I have tried with newbies from Allied, from the tech schools, and from CS.

Even so, it's very hard in the beginning to make minimum wage for most new MTs. Remember that it will take you 3-5 years before you're out of the "newbie" stage, assuming that you can get a job in this market, which is very, very tough. There's so many qualified MTs out there now looking for work, I'd be hard pressed to hire a newbie.

The "negative" people are just trying to let you know that it is harder than you think, and it's not getting better. Peruse the new MT board and take a look at all the people looking for jobs. Look at the "jobs wanted" board. Do a google search on people hiring MTs, both in-house and at home, look at the requirements. Do your research. Good luck.

Negative feedback - LK

[ In Reply To ..]
Dreammove, if you come to this board you will find negativity. You need to have a thick skin if you come here and ask for advice. It's best just to ignore the negativity and take whatever helpful feedback you get, as you will also find much good advice on these boards. It may not always be what you want to hear, though. Just ignore the nasty, sarcastic comments. There are many people in the MT field who are hurting right now, and some express it on these boards with a lot of anger.

why "dreammove" chooses MT. That is her business. She came here seeking honest advice and some of you treated her terribly. I think you should be ashamed of yourselves. Think back on the time when you were new. Wasn't there someone who was kind to you and mentored you? I had such a person take me under her wing and help me. I vowed that I would try to help new people, even if it only with a kind word. Please, can we not be a little (or a LOT) kinder to each other?

If her screen name is any indication, she may harbor some hope/delusion that going to MT school is going to be smooth sailing...to let her believe that she'll even make $25K a year would be encouraging a fantasy, and that's IF she can even find a job.

It is doing no kindness to allow someone to spend thousands of dollars on something that will not return that investment. It would be like convincing someone to spend thousands on a Betamax video player because they're going to make a comeback.
Cruel - to be kind. S/M
[ In Reply To ..]
I agree completely. It reminds me of the song "Cruel to be Kind." How she responds to the advice, may be an indication of how set she is in her path. Human psychology is not always fact-guided. In her mind, we may be all a bunch of negative, embittered people who want nothing more than to puncture newbies' dreams. In that case, she will feel justified in continuing her MT study. Success in any field (MT or something else) requires realigning one's plans in light of circumstances. If I want to drive down the road and the road has been washed out by a flood, I would have to be deluded to say "I'm going to stick with this road, it's the road for me." Or to say that the flagman waving his flashlight, 50 yards back, just wanted to discourage me. My motivations are good, I love to help newbies too, and encourage them, but I cannot in good faith encourage them down the path of MT. My focus now is for advising those considering other fields. My encouragement for those in MT is (if they are making good money)-- save your money, have a plan B in mind-- or (if they are not making good money) remember that you are not in this alone, and look for something you can change! Yes, sometimes I feel the forum is negative, and sometimes my posts feel like they are adding to the pile, but there is a large and growing segment of MTs who find their working conditions getting worse with each year. We all need to process that and come to terms with it for ourselves. We bandy sarcasm about among ourselves, but it is our own joke, and we understand each other (usually). Eventually we will find other careers or stick with the living we can eke out from MT. I too was making $30 an hour last year. This year, I make that on an average day. I post a lot. Gradually, I will post less, and move away from thinking about it so much, and find something else to occupy myself. Potter. Selling vegetables. Assistant teaching. Freelance writing. All of the above. I will survive, we all will. For those of us who see it that way, our cages have been opened, we are being shooed out the open door. If we meet newbies coming in through that door, maybe we just don't say anything. Everybody has a life pattern that only that person can follow.
sorry - .

I lose patience with some of these people, too. I get very angry at the schools that prey on them, but on the other hand, if they don't bother to do their research, it's no one's fault but their own. Sometimes, it seems like they don't want advice, they just want someone who is going to agree with them. I personally don't have the money to waste.

Sometimes it seems as if they know nothing about what a transcriptionist even does. Very sad.
mtmtmtmt - Sad, too
[ In Reply To ..]
What I think is sad is that many (NOT all) of the people who know nothing about MT is that they want an automatic babysitter. Or maybe they have seen an add from a matchbook that assures them they can make 50K a year at home while looking like Sally Field. These people likely have no background in or love for science. In a way, they are exploiting MT to their own ends. Hey, I have a kid, too, but I treat MT like the PROFESSION it is. That I get to work at home is only secondary. Good luck to all.
No, I would rather that perspectives - Nick

be given with kindness. It CAN be done. Many on here have done it. Others have acted out with sarcasm and anger. MTs want to be considered to be "professionals"--treating anyone with such unkindness is hardly profession--nor is it necessary.

I recently graduated from Andrews, and I highly recommend it.

Every profession has its positive and negative aspects. You need to figure out what your priorities are and what works for you. Message boards such as this one are good places to gather information.

Some people are happy in this field, and some are not. Just because somebody else has a bad experience doesn't necessarily mean you will too.

The rude and sarcastic response to your question was totally uncalled for.

I think Nick's remarks were excellent, and I agree with his opinions.

Good luck!

Wow. What a lot of nasty responses! I'm sure you weren't looking for that when you asked your question.
Personally, I went through MTEC and felt they had a very good program and would recommend it. However, TRSI is also a great school and I have heard good things about them as well. Check out the AHDI website (ahdi.org) for info on approved schools and changes in the industry that may affect the profession in the future. I, for one, love my job, have done it for a while now, and despite what some of the people say on here, I make great money now and it is possible to do well in this profession. Good luck!

Refreshing response - Thank you!

Although I did not post this question that everyone has been trying 'so hard' to answer I would like to personally thank you for your positive words. I am a newbie (like the original poster, dreammove) and it is nice to see some shread of humanity left in the world. I'm glad I am not the only positive person left. Telling the truth is one thing, but being rude/nasty/sarcastic is an act of immature anger or lack of self confidence. Everyone needs to have a little more faith. Thanks again! I will continue my job search today with a feeling of hope because of you!

Remember Thumper telling Bambi his mother's advice? That doesn't mean you can't be honest or straightforward. But to make judgements on a person's motivation, sincerity or sanity based on a post to a forum is ridiculous. I haven't visited this site for a few months after having had a similar reaction to an innocent post as a newbie. I personally resent the categorical assumption that anyone even considering this as a profession hasn't done their research, thinks of it as a quick way to make a lot of money or is a career that is a piece of cake to just walk into. I have a bachelor's degree in Zoology, have stayed home with my kids, lived and worked in more amazing places and jobs than most people could ever even dream of and have been around enough to know that anyone who expresses as much frustration and hostility as I see on this site probably needs to find another path in their lives because there is no way those attitudes do not reflect in their work and relationships to their employers. Who can name any industry or profession that hasn't gone through dramatic changes in the past 10-20 years? Adapt or perish is what I say. And I'm sure there will be some very choice replies to this post that will say I don't have a clue what I'm talking about, but I think I'll stay away from the site again for awhile. BTW, I have a transcription job and another job at a hospital thanks in part to my transcription training, so there is hope. Good luck to all the other newbies, thanks to the few and far between positive voices out there and I'll leave you all with this: Thoughts become words; Words become actions; Actions become habits; Habits become character; Character becomes destiny; You become confused; Just Be Nice!! I'm going to mow my lawn!

This is exactly what I have been thinking about "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all." Exactly. I was sitting at the dinner table tonight thinking about all the words I've read on this site today, some positive, most nasty, and that exact saying popped in to my head. I really enjoyed the last part of your post, about character, so true!! Thank you for being so positive, but factual at the same time. I am not the original poster, just someone chiming in (a newb). Tomorrow is a new day of job searching for me, better get to bed!

I agree eagles_fan. I graduated from TRSi and they do have a good, solid based SUM program. I am sure that the rest of the AHDI approved schools are great, too. Yes, the porfession is changing, but we all need to find a way to make this profession valuable and work for each individual. Yes, I am still looking for a job, but it is partially my own dilemma, since I don't want to quit my full-time job to take a on a full-time MT job. It is difficult to get a part-time job as a newbie. Okay... The last thing I want to do is come across as being nasty or negative (even though I can understand why some of my fellow MTs are), but I will be perfectly honest. I hope that you don't take any of the comments I make to be against you because I truly want to help you. With that being said, I'm begging you, please RUN - don't walk - away from a career as an MT. Here is my experience:

I have been an MT for 15 years. I enrolled a training program (a SUM Program that I believe someone named "Nick" mentioned previously), lured in by the ads of a "promising career" with a "bright future and opportunity for growth" and the possibility of "working from home" while raising my children (that's where the comment about the baby on the lap came from... that was the typical picture on the ad that was used back in the day... maybe they have gotten rid of it). Anyhow, approximately 10 months and THOUSANDS of dollars later, I completed my training program and was off to work. Now back in the mid 90s, the MT field was very different, and MTs could actually make some money. I did my time in several offices, mostly with the good old pick up/drop off service, so I was able to work from home. I still didn't make the money that I was promised by the recruiter at the school, but enough to get by and pay my student loan on time (without much left over). I left the MT field in 2001 in order to return to college because of the lack of money I was making as an MT. I returned in 2004 out of necessity because I was broke. I relocated to Florida, and in 2005 I started with my first nationwide company. I landed a job with a company called Heartland. It was WONDERFUL! The line pay was 8 cpl to start, limited accounts so I came across the same doctors over and over (which is a HUGE line production booster = more money), production incentives (the more lines you type, the more money you make), and $14/hour compensation for "down time" (that's when a company runs out of work for the MTs). I thought it was a dream come true... until 6 months later when every American MT was laid off via conference call. Say hello to outsourcing! So I picked myself up, dusted myself off, and started job hunting. I landed another position with a nationwide company with that "small company feel" that "cared about their employees." (Sorry, but I can't name this one). They started me at 8.5 cpl, so I figured I was moving up in the world. They did not compensate for down time, but PROMISED me that there was never any down time, actually too much work, so that would not even be a problem. I remember the recruiter saying "Down time? What's that? I've never heard of that." Yeah... right. At first, this place would like to call on my days off or after my shift was over because they needed someone to work. It was slightly abusive, but I was able to do it, and they did compensate for the overtime. As the months went on, my interaction with the completely incompetent management staff became more and more frustrating. I was starting to get more and more accounts (even though I was promised 1 main and 1 backup account), each with their own client profiles and rules to memorize and follow before you can even start typing, which was dragging down my line count. That's usually the first sign of overhiring... work on your primary runs out often. When I finally got up the nerve to protest after being assigned to 13 different accounts... I GOT A RAISE. Great! A whopping 0.005 cpl. Now I was making 9 cpl... really moving up in the world. Well, it was better than nothing, so even though I was starting to consistently run out of work, I hung in there until this past April when I was laid off. Say hello to outsourcing part 2! I guess you can figure out why the length of this response is so long... I've got plenty of time... I'm UNEMPLOYED! And, with my years of experience, I was making about the same as I did back when I was fresh out of school in 95.

I know that this is just my experience, but I also know that I'm not alone here. If you plan on working for a major company for the at-home perks, you will be used, chewed up, and spit out after they give your job to someone overseas or to someone else who will work cheaper than you. And I also have to say that this site is wonderful. You will find so many helpful people, and most of them are those "nasty" MTs who have been in the trenches a while. They're actually trying to help you. Also keep in mind that there are many people from management in companies and recruiters from schools, etc., who check on here periodically and sing the praises of certain companies and how wonderful being an MT is. They're the ones to be careful of, and they usually come across as nice.

I hope you find some of this information helpful. This nasty MT is back to the Word Help board to see if I can do my part and wishes you the best of luck!

HPI SUM Program best training for $ out there - IMANMT2

Most "schools" are rip offs - they fluff up the curriculum and call themselves "accredited" and pay the bucks to keep it... but it isn't for the benefit of the students, it is to obtain and keep their eligibility for title IV money (Pell grants and student loans). There is an 80/20 rule with title IV money .. that's where scholarships come in... especially for tech schools and private colleges/career schools and the like. Title IV money is meat and potatoes to every post-high school institution out there.

If a school doesn't offer verifiable OJT in the form of a LENGTHY internship (and not one the student has to come up with themselves - although those are not necessarily bad, just shouldn't be the student's responsbility) that can count as work experience on a resume, which is what opens employment doors, then the "training" should be passed on. The only problem is... most schools don't offer it. Don't see the necessity of OJT.... you know to hurl you past that ole catch 22 in the MT industry for newbies. Some people sell internships. I've seen them on here, even.

So, SUM program 700 dollars, computer 500... verifiable work experience in the form of an internship .... PRICELESS.

And it couldn't hurt to find a mentor.

:D

AHDI approved school - deb142

I am in the middle of the year long medical transcription program at Andrews School. Before I picked Andrews I checked the AHDI website to see what schools they approve and Andrews is one of them. I think Andrews is one of the best but I would pick any of the schools approved by the AHDI.

[ In Reply To ..]
deb142, Andrews is, IMHO, the very best school there is and you chose well. Congratulations. I would respectfully say, however, that I most certainly would NOT "pick ANY of the schools approved by the AHDI." The AHDI is not infallible, nor is it always acting in the best interest of the medical transcription community. There many instances in which they have acted against our best interests. This includes granting approval to some schools I absolutely would not recommend. Andrews is a great school and this is one of the (few) things upon which the AHDI and I agree. The suits at AHDI are not the grand pro-bahs of the MT world, try though they might to be so.

Here's an idea... - no1joe

Truthfully I don't know why I'm bothering, but again I'm trying to help. Before you dive head first into a transcription program, check you local community college. In my area, they offer an associates in liberal arts/medical management that includes medical terminology/keyboarding/transcription as part of the program. This could #1: Give you options for employment other than just a transcription gig. #2: You will have transferrable college credits for the future if you decide to return to college. Unless things have changed drastically, the transcription programs offered at private secretarial schools DID NOT have transferrable credits. #3: You might be able to do transcription work in the office or take some home to get some experience without starving.

Again, good luck to you.

Anyone know how long you are supposed to get training pay? Came back to company for some extra $$ and thought I was told this is a 90 day thing, but 2nd paycheck was on production pay though I am still 100% QA? Anyone have any suggestions on this?  I am so confused now. ...

Still In Training
Jan 29, 2011

I am still in training, but was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on the software and or equipment I could go ahead and purchase to help me get through my training more smoothly.  My dictation at this time is on a CD disk and wondered if a foot petal would help me at this point.  Thanks,   bettyboop ...

Training Someone To Be An MT
Mar 21, 2011

Has anyone tried to train someone else to be an MT on their own, without the courses?  I am a CMT and have 18 years experience - I have a couple family members that would like to learn to become an MT but cannot afford the course.  I am considering trying to train them myself - any suggestions? ...

Training For 7.1
Aug 07, 2012

About 6 weeks back I finished the training for 7.0.  We were then told that go live was August 20, and that we had to do new training.  I just did it.  Ladies and gents, I am sorry to say I am scared to death.  First of all, I have ADD, and it is hard for me to understand things right away.  I am not stupid, but only a person with ADD understands what I am saying.  I am going to go over all the training again and again, as that is how I learn things (even in college ...

Pay During Training
Oct 08, 2012

Hi all! I have applied to a few jobs since leaving my last one, and I'm finding that most companies do not even pay while the MT is training or trying to ramp up. Then, I was looking at Amphion, and they pay new MTs for 3 months while getting up to speed? That doesn't seem real! How can anyone afford to start a new job?! ...

Who Is Training ASR??? Definitely Not The MT!
Jul 04, 2013

Every day ASR gets increasingly of base.  There are so many times when I have to sit and search each line looking for anything that remotely resembles what is being clearly dictated. It started out with maybe 35% accuracy before editing.  Now it barely makes 20%. It inserts phrases that were never dictated, apparently just because that dictator dictated that phrase at one time in the past on a different patient.  It is having fun with "ALLERGIES" now.  It started off only usi ...

Regarding The Old Reports Used For Training At MDI
Nov 25, 2009

I believe that these are old reports used for training, but I don't think they are training new MTs on the account.  I believe they are training VR.  Someone mentioned below that it doesn't make sense to pay someone to do old reports that have already been done, and I agree with that also.  Plus, think about the fact that MDI had never, ever trained like this before, even after receiving email after email asking where all our work was going and why we had no work.  ...

With Whom Did You Complete Your MT Training?
Jul 01, 2010

To those of you who have completed a transcription course, who did you go through and why?  I don't know if this is too specific to ask here, but I did not see any rules against asking about the schooling.  I have been an MT for eight years, and received OTJ training, plus I have an extensive medical background prior to transcribing.  However, I have a friend who would like to complete a program, and while I have a few schools/programs in mind to refer her to, I would like to ...

Mandatory Training Without Pay - Really?
Jun 03, 2010

Just informed that I have to take MANDATORY HIPAA training without pay because I can take it "anytime on my OWN time!"  LOL!!!  The course is 45 minutes long!  It is not enough that we have to learn account specifics "on our own time", read the constant silly e-mails "on our own time", but now we have to do mandatory training "on our own time."  Oh, yeah - and we have to pass the class with a test at the end too!  I feel like I am in a volunteer job!   Hmmmm, I ...
