considering training to be a MT - Tamarackart

I am considering an online school to learn Medical Transcription. What does the future look like for upcoming MT's? With all the medical changes coming, would this be a career to consider? Thanks for any help!

Read through the board and you will see the hardship that MTs are facing these days. There are some who say they are doing well, and they very well may be, but they likely represent a very small group in comparison to the industry as a whole. I used to recommend this field wholeheartedly to anyone who was interested, but that is no longer the case. I have left the field after almost 20 years because of the continuous cuts in pay (at several different companies) and the advent of voice recognition and the fact that it pays much lower than the already low transcription rates. IF you are fortunate enough to find your own clients and IF they appreciate your talents enough to remain loyal to you rather than saving the few bucks that voice recognition might save them, then you might do okay, but I urge you to do a lot of research before you start down this road. Online transcription schools are expensive and the industry just does not pay well enough anymore.

overseas to India. They don't care about patient safety or quality, only profit. On top of that, voice recognition is being used more often now, and for the most part, it takes just as long to do a report but they only want to pay you about half of what you'd make typing it. Then on top of that, they're trying to implement EMR where hospitals can touch a screen to answer questions and choose diagnoses, etc., to eliminate having to dictate so many reports.... I wouldn't recommend getting into this field as we are all sweating what the future holds for us.

As stated below, the industry has changed significantly. What you think you might be getting into may not be the case at all. I am one of the few fortunate MTs who has been around for decades. I make very good money AT THE MOMENT. You have to realize that this is subject to change at any given time and without notice. You can lose your account by the client deferring to renew their contract with your company, your job may be shipped overseas, etc. Then again, you may be typing or you may be doing VR. You never know. Becoming an IC is a completely different story, sometimes good and sometimes bad. I am in a Golden Handcuff situation. Too late for me to start over really. I don't know how old you are, but if you are young enough to consider going back to school in a more occupation - that is certainly what I would do if if if if. Ask yourself a few questions. Do I need a stable income? Is my family dependent on my income. Do I need more stable employment? Am I willing to put in the YEARS it will take to make any real money. This includes not just doing the minimum requirement of 1,200 lines or so - but up to 1500-2000 of very ACCURATE dictation. Only you can make the right decision for you. of the situation. I am the sole supporter of the family, hence the name "7-dayMT" as that is what it takes to make enough money for my family. I don't have time for a life. For some people, $25-30K a year might be enough; not for me. The rent here alone is quite high. I am not particularly young (44) and yet am considering changing occupations - but this will require time and money (for further education) that I don't know if I can find. This was not even my intended occupation - I kind of fell into it and it served me well for years.

Every day ASR gets increasingly of base. There are so many times when I have to sit and search each line looking for anything that remotely resembles what is being clearly dictated. It started out with maybe 35% accuracy before editing. Now it barely makes 20%. I believe that these are old reports used for training, but I don't think they are training new MTs on the account. I believe they are training VR. Someone mentioned below that it doesn't make sense to pay someone to do old reports that have already been done, and I agree with that also. Plus, think about the fact that MDI had never, ever trained like this before, even after receiving email after email asking where all our work was going and why we had no work. ...

Just informed that I have to take MANDATORY HIPAA training without pay because I can take it "anytime on my OWN time!" LOL!!! The course is 45 minutes long! It is not enough that we have to learn account specifics "on our own time", read the constant silly e-mails "on our own time", but now we have to do mandatory training "on our own time."
