Training someone to be an MT - TexasMT

Has anyone tried to train someone else to be an MT on their own, without the courses? I am a CMT and have 18 years experience - I have a couple family members that would like to learn to become an MT but cannot afford the course. I am considering trying to train them myself - any suggestions?

How did you learn? 21 years ago I had to take courses in medical terminology and anatomy and physiology then I was "thrown to the lions" my boss made me sit down and listen to the easier dictators and type what I heard. If you have the ability to let them do it, that would probably be the easiest way. Probably not a possibility with HIPAA these days though.

After she showed me what she did, letting me listen to some reports and play at typing (didn't understand ANYTHING), I got a job as a trainee in a little shop and signed up for very inexpensive (for residents) anatomy and a terminology classes at a local community college. I kept a file of printed sample reports for every dictator and sat between the boss and another MT, sweet ladies who'd grab the headphones when I couldn't figure something out.

Although education would have been useful first, of course, learning by doing is a great way. I made bupkiss, but I did earn while learning and outlay was minimal. I even had fun at it. It also has the tremendous advantage of teaching people fast whether they want to continue, BEFORE any significant investment of time or money. I wasn't the only trainee while I was there, but I was the only one to continue with it.

BTW, as a couple of my moved-on friends remind me, have you evaluated your guys for some talent for transcribing and editing? I did bring to the field well developed written English skills, which have been a big part of doing well in production work. Virtually no time wasted trying to get punctuation, sentence structure, grammar, spelling right. No time spent responding to QA issues for those kinds of mistakes. No layoffs when the time comes to cut back on staff (so far).

I would at least try to get the Sum program with the scripts included and then let them "struggle" on their own, only being allowed to view the scripts after they've exhausted all resources.

Are you sure you want to encourage them to go into this business to begin with?

If they ever want to work from home from one of the MTSOs, your training will not be accepted. MTSOs want formal education for MT.

I would not even consider it unless they had classes in anatomy and physiology and medical terminology under their belts. Then I would try to find the SUM program as the other poster suggested. If a person is good enough there is always a possibility of getting a job in a facility if you test well. That requires a lot of practice and experience, though.

I have done this successfuly four times (working on my fifth). I can tell pretty quickly if they will be able to "get it." They must have excellent typing, spelling and English skills. I have trained MT's to work for me who had no medical, just the above skills who went on to get their own accounts and be very successful. I have a couple of sisters who wanted to try it and they were terrible at it. When I first started hiring people, this one girl insisted "I'm a good typist I can do this." So I gave her a tape to take home (long time ago), she returned the tape a couple of days later and said "wow, what a humbling experience, I could never do this."

That is what is so sad that many doctors think we are just typists. It is a full package with basic skills above, not to mention work ethic (which I am finding VERY hard to find these days)....

So in summary, it can be done, but not easy. If they don't have the basics above, don't bother.

Every day ASR gets increasingly of base. There are so many times when I have to sit and search each line looking for anything that remotely resembles what is being clearly dictated. It started out with maybe 35% accuracy before editing. Now it barely makes 20%. I believe that these are old reports used for training, but I don't think they are training new MTs on the account. I believe they are training VR. Someone mentioned below that it doesn't make sense to pay someone to do old reports that have already been done, and I agree with that also. Plus, think about the fact that MDI had never, ever trained like this before, even after receiving email after email asking where all our work was going and why we had no work. ...

Just informed that I have to take MANDATORY HIPAA training without pay because I can take it "anytime on my OWN time!" LOL!!! The course is 45 minutes long! It is not enough that we have to learn account specifics "on our own time", read the constant silly e-mails "on our own time", but now we have to do mandatory training "on our own time."
