Is all of this schooling worth it or not??? - skirk

Posted: Dec 28, 2011

I am just wondering if this schooling has all been worth it.  I am not seeing alot of happy people on this site.  I have been a graduate of medical in 1986 and since gone on to manicuring for the sake of flexible schedule while my child was in latter years of school. I pursued a course with Mt Professionals to be able to catch up and with skills and am still in my third year of school on part-time basis waiting to pass to become a paid employee with one error.  I am getting really discouraged and thinking of quiting but hate to with all the time that I have invested in this.  But, really, is this worth it or not???

I don't think any of us can answer your question, certainly not in the positive sense, and I think you know that. Have you read these boards? My God, you've done some 3-year course for which you've paid dearly, undoubtedly, in many ways...and now you're led to believe that just "one error" bars you from gainful employ? And you want us to say what, exactly? The fact that you've found your way to this board hoping for some answers from those of us who ourselves know nothing, or next to nothing, well it speaks volumes, I suppose, about your situation. Good luck to you, we all hope you did not get ripped off. What can anyone say?

There are countless others on here that fell for similar hoaxes - Squeaky Wheel

We have no idea how many others here on this board have been tricked into doing live work and not paid for it. The companies, laughingly called schools, get paid for the work you do, but you don't get paid for it because your work isn't good enough yet. Right.

The OP is not the only one on here who fell for this.

MT worth it, yes! - luckyladyinca

Yes, it is worth it! Invest in your education and pay attention to detail, and you should not have any problems. Also, a mentor and great internship will be of the most value to you. In fact, every new job is sort of an "internship," where you can learn a great deal. Try find a smaller MTSO or individual who can take time out to train on transcription and the business side of running an MTSO as well as AHDI meetings for networking. Good luck to you!

here's my two cents. Try your hardest to get on with a hospital or large surgical group. Most of them will allow you to work at home at some point. They pay better than the national companies and the benefits are much, much better. At that point, work for the hospital, but continue on with your education. If you want to continue in the medical field, this is a great way to do it. Most hospitals will pay a big portion of continuing education. Community colleges are great places to get an ongoing degree pretty cheaply. Go get a nursing degree or surgical tech degree. Something that pays well. Your MT education won't be in vain as you can use it as a stepping stone to get into a more lucrative medical position. Good luck to you! I'm about to do the same thing.

Is that a company that has you so-called 'training' on live work - that you do not get paid for

[ In Reply To ..]
Is that the one that claims to be a school and has you working on live work, but not being paid until you reach a certain level, which nobody in history has ever been known to reach and finally everyone just gives up?

yes, I guess I have had 3 years of patience with them and over it. They used to have testimonials on here of graduates and no longer have that. They still have people you can e-mail for help but cannot get ahold of in person. Should have known better.

Don't kick yourself about it. You have lots of company. - sm

There are people who are just experts in convincing their 'victims' that what they offer is legitimate. I don't know this particular company, but there are lots of them with lots of people who have fallen for them. You've got lots of company, intelligent people who are just used to believing that people are telling the truth.

The reason nothing ever is done against scam schools - Dont kick yourself

Scam schools just keep changing their names and even moving after they've been reported to BBB or had lawsuits filed. Sometimes they move to and from different states, from the U.S. to Canada and back, to avoid prosecution. I am not talking about this school in specific, but scam schools in general. There is one that is infamous. It has been doing it for years. I don't know if there is any connection between that one and the school you enrolled with.

Question About Schooling
Dec 28, 2011

I am an RN but haven't worked as an RN for 20 years, have attended job fairs and pretty much have been told there are no jobs, nothing I can do after being out of the field this long (even taking the refresher courses). I left the field to be an MT,  as I could do it from home and still have some supervision of my children (I am CMT and have been an MT for 20 years). With the continued loss of income, I am seriously considering coding.  I have 2 questions for everyone, I know I wi ...

I am considering the Medical Billing/Coding program at Career Step.  I know someone who works there and they can get me almost half off tuition.  I want to know what any of you think about Career Step? I went to Andrews for MT school and I think it was great, I just don't know if I want to go that route for coding, the Career Step program is for combined billing/coding. ...

Can I Work As A MT If I Do Not Finish My Schooling?
Aug 01, 2014

Just wondering, does anyone know if I can work as a MT if I do not complete my schooling? I have about a month and a half of MT schooling left and I was wondering if I can do MT work? Iam at the point where I do not know if this is the right thing for me or not. Maybe if I can do some actual work it would help me decide to complete my schooling or try something else. Anyone else in my boat? Thanks!!! ...

Nov 08, 2010

Here is the situation.  I am currently going through an MT course, I am in the Beginning MT practicum and then I have Intermediate MT practicum to complete.  When I originally signed up for the course, I signed up for the "complete course" (Intermediate was the final module) in order to receive my certification of completion.  I have recently found out, quite by accident, that my school has now added 2 additional modules to complete the course for an additional charge of ...

CCS Exam - I Have Finished Schooling For The ICD9
Mar 18, 2014

I have finished schooling for the ICD9, and am getting ready to start an adjunct ICD10 class.  The AHIMA is changing the test to ICD10 at the end of April.  I wonder if there will be any ICD9 on there at all.  Also, for the coders out there that have trained with the ICD10, do you find it will be a better system than ICD9?  I am excited to learn it.    Thank you, PJ ...

What We Are Worth
Mar 08, 2012

I invite any person of management in any MTSO to sit at their computer for an entire shift and see what we go through day after day and see if they feel they are being paid a proper, living wage.  There are way too many factors that eat into the paltry wage we start out with, and it's high time this was recognized as an occupational hazard and we are duly compensated.  It's only going to get worse, not better, if something isn't done.  Of course, I realize nobody r ...

We Are Worth More
Apr 22, 2012

We are worth more in so many ways.  I am very disheartened with the way things have changed in our profession.  We used to be paid much better, and have a better chance of moving up the ladder as well.  Now we are almost at poverty level on wages.  I really don't understand how anyone can expect people who are very highly trained and specialized in this field to live on what we are being paid, or to treat us as if we are second-class citizens.  I would challenge any ...

What You Are Worth
May 12, 2012

I'm curious.  How many of you cheering on this lawsuit think that things will change in a way that you will be paid "what you are worth?"  And what are you worth?  I mean seriously?  Is someone who does a lousy job as valuable as someone who does a stellar job?  Is someone with a shoddy education as valuable as someone with a first-class education?  How about those with no formal education at all? What is it you all think you will really accomplish with a law ...

New MT Is It Worth It?
Aug 18, 2012

I graduated a year and a half ago from a very good MT school. I graduated with high honors and felt ready to tackle this profession. I wanted to do this because it has always been my dream to be a stay at home mom and with this profession I felt like I got the best of both worlds. When I researched MT are suposed to make 30K or more. So I figured as a newbie maybe 20K or even 18K. Wow was I wrong. I got hired about 2 months out of school which was a huge relief but things rapidly went down hill. ...

CMT Worth It?
Sep 08, 2012

I'm getting ready to buckle down and study for my CMT.  I got my RMT this spring and promised myself that I would get the CMT before I forgot too much.  I'm having trouble motivating myself to memorize all the abbreviations (this seems to be a favorite type of question), so I'm wondering how folks who have their CMT feel about whether or not it has helped them with their career or not.  Thanks for encouragement or discouragement.  I'd really like to know. ...

I have over 30 years experience.  I have worked in 2 major hospitals and as an independent contractor.  I know what I am doing.  Problem is, I am human.  I make mistakes.  But with this company, 1 mistake is huge.  It can bring your accuracy score down below their guidelines.  Just for a left out word that does not change the context.   I have just about had enough.  I really don't have to be talked to like a toddler when I make a mistake.&n ...

What Are We Worth?
Aug 22, 2013

I would love to hear from my fellow MTs what you think we are worth, not by the line but by the hour.  Indeed as I was doing research regarding "piece work" in America, I found very little information except that it went back to the guild system. However, I did learn that in England, if you do piece work (cpl, for example) and you are required to sign in and sign out, you cannot be paid for production, but only an hourly wage.  So what do you think we are worth? Let's consider whe ...

Is CMT Certification Worth It?
Feb 14, 2010

What are your feelings about obtaining your CMT credentials when VR (at least with my employer) doesn't follow BOS or acknowledge the styles, forms and practices that, at one time were the norm? I get blown away with sentence structure and grammar these days.  Do you think one should become certified with the latest trend with VR?  Seems to me "No", not worth it, unless I moved on to a company who did not use VR. But, then again, if this is the trend hospitals and companies a ...

BOS 3 Worth Buying?
Nov 15, 2010

Is it worth purchasing the BOS 3 before I start testing?  I have looked online to see what others have said, and it seems like most have said they wouldn't spend the money because it's not that different from the 2nd version.  One person said they read the book and saw only 2 changes from the previous edition.  I'm not sure what to do.  I'm worried that I'm going to need the newer version to pass the test.  Just wanted to see what others have don ...

Is This Profession Even Worth It?

Current CMT's - Is It Worth It?
Jan 08, 2011

If I take the CMT test the goal is to increase my income from my current earnings as a full time MT/ME.  But is it worth the $$ and time required to prepare for and take the CMT test?  I am confident that I would have no problem passing the test after adequate review, etc. So is it worth the effort?  Bottom line -- it will cost money to take the exam and it will cost money to either enroll in a review course or buy review materials to prepare for the exam. And the CMT credential ...

Hello forum users! Is MT Even Worth It Anymore????
Jan 06, 2012

I guess I just need to vent/rant for a minute.  I have been an MT for over three years now.  I seem to be one of the few who prefers VR over ST.  I worked for Spheris before MQ gobbled them up, and I thought they were a great co. to work for.  They paid 5 cpl for VR, which is pretty good if you can edit 300-400 lph.  Then came the Q, and it was okay for a while, but then the Spheris accts. were offshored and there went the Cornerstone accts., and Cornerstone was a great ...
