Having hard time hearing doctor on voice files - starfish2010

Posted: Nov 04, 2010

I wanted to know some pointers to get ahead with understanding a doctor's dictation in certain parts of a voice file. I am having a hard time even though I have been doing MT work for over a year.

Any suggestions would really help.

Thanks

You really don't mention what the problem is. Is the sound quality poor or are you just having difficulty with the dictator because they speak too quickly or mumble? If the sound quality is really bad, there really aren't any pointers. If it's the dictator and the fact that you aren't used to him/her, you may just have to play back and rewind numerous times. Otherwise, I'd leave blanks where you are having the issues and flag the report so that you can get the correct information.

Depending on the problem or the dictator, sometimes - slowing down the speed helps - sm

a lot, sometimes it just makes it worse. Believe it or not, sometimes even speeding it up can help. But it depends on the dictator, and quality of the sound file. Sometimes a new headset can help, or a new cord and button. Some people have suggested a new sound card for your computer, though I personally haven't gotten to the point where I've wanted to spend the money on that, yet.

If it's just a mumbled word, the thing that works best for me is to leave a blank, and KEEP ON TYPING. Frequently, the same word will pop up later in the report. With any luck, maybe the dictator will say it more clearly the 2nd or 3rd time.

Even if the word doesn't come up again in the report, sometimes when you go back and listen again after having finished typing the report, your ear is a little more "tuned" to the dictator, and you can then hear the word.

You might be able to ask your supervisor to email you some samples of that dictator's reports. The word(s) could be found that way.

Sometimes, if you're adept at using Google as a research tool, you can find a word by typing what it sounds like, along with a relevant portion of the sentence, into Google. This may take several tries doing it different ways. If you're lucky, Google may say, "Don't you mean ______?" And maybe that's what you're looking for. (Always a good idea to verify what you find on Google in your references, if possible, once it gives you an idea of what the word is and how to spell it).

When Google suggests a word or a drug, try typing it in and see the number of items it finds. If the count is high, like in the 10s or 100s of thousands, that's a good sign. The millions are even better. If it's only like 350, that's not a good sign.

There are also some web sites and blogs online that have report samples on them. If you're having trouble with typing a cataract extraction, for example, you may be able to type something like "sample cataract extraction report" into Google, and find some help that way.

When all else fails, it's better to leave the word(s) blank in the report than to guess.

Hello, This is for the small MTSO or MT who serves a few clients: Which method are you using for accessing digital audio files?  If FTP. are the dictators downloading them on your website or are you accessing them from theirs?   Anyone here using one of the services for this?  If so, which one and how is the cost working out? I was wondering if anyone can tell me the easiest method to use for obtaining voice files. Would it be to have the doctor dictate and then upload to an FTP site? Way To Save Voice Files In EBTXT?
Jul 21, 2013

I work on eBTXT and am told there is no way for me to relisten to the audio after it goes to QA, but of course my TSM can, which gets me nowhere.  Is there a way to save the voice file to my computer?  I would of course delete any patient demographics.  I hate not being able to relisten to my reports that QA reviewed, especially since they're just guessing and changing what they want.  I haven't been able to locate anywhere on my computer where files are stored even ...

I'm Having A REALLY Hard Time Believing
Dec 27, 2014

There are these 3 horrible ESLs, and I mean HORRIBLE--I cannot believe they are even allowed to dictate they are so all over place, mispronouncing every third word-- but my question is WHY, out of all the other fairly good dictators I do on a regular basis, are THESE 3 constantly being audited.  If I really believed it was random, (and I just can't) I would have less of a problem with this whole Fiesa thing.  But WHERE are the audits on the reports by the GREAT dictators?&nbs ...
