Advice on How to Begin MT Career - Becker

Posted: Jan 04, 2010

I would greatly appreciate any advice on how to get trained, the best training programs & how to eventually get hired as an MT.

I have zero medical background, so the right training program is critical & this is a huge commitment & the training is pricey so I want to get it right.

Thanks in advance.........

MT schools and information ... - sm

The 2 top schools are M-TEC and Andrews. Go to the AHDI website and find their listing of AHDI-approved programs. Make sure it is one of those.

If you go to a reputable school, they should help you with looking for a job afterward.

M-TEC and Andrews are also the most expensive schools but are worth it. You want quality education.

Please read the posts on this board as well as others, to see how this profession is not as lucrative as it has been in the past, and will not be again before you decide this is what you want to do. Getting a job as a newbie is rather difficult with most companies wanting 2 years experience.

Otherwise if you really want to do this, make sure your school is accredited through the AHDI which can be found on the internet. There are many schools that say they are the best, but a lot of them are scams. There are just 1-2 really good schools that are accredited. Then you must study, study, and study some more. You need to have excellent English and spelling skills.

If you are young enough to go into something more lucrative at this point in your life, please do that, as a lot of us are hoping that there will still be work left until we retire in a short period of time.

Just being honest with you. What kind of profession is good at this point in time, who knows. But I do know this is one that will not make you enough money to support yourself unless you have some other means of support in your life.

Before you invest too much time or money, please do some research. Though there is a lot of negativity on these boards, it's worth your while to check out other sources and see if the general rule that seems to apply here is relevant for others as well. Personally, I'm back in school for another career choice. After 20+ years, my income continues to drop as do the line rates paid to MT's. There's not much, if any, loyalty to newbies from the big national companies.

any community college offers courses and are accepted. takes close to two years to get certified. - leaving mt

then you need to gain experience and most MTSOs want 2 or more years. Some take new grads but pay less in trade-off, which is good for those not self supporting.

Testing for certification will cost but not sure how much these days.

I have been an MT for many, many years and have always felt the CMT was unnecessary and way too expensive. Not having it has never held me back from anything I wanted to do, and I have had a very lucrative career in the field. I do not support AHDI because of their support of offshoring. I was a member for several years but, quite frankly, did not see what it did for me at all. Just my opinion, of course.

I make 1 cpl CMT differential under 2 MTSOs. - nm

Friend, I think you are about 10 years too late. No fault of yours. I would not advise any child of mine to go into MT. Between offshoring, the economy, and VR, it is not a good career choice. If you have zero medical background, you are at a disadvantage. Every day our company receives tons of resumes from people with top-notch educations and maybe 10-20 years of experience. We hire one or two people once in a while, but we will not even interview anyone without a MINIMUM of five years experience. You sound like a younger person and, presuming you will have many more years to work, I would bet you could invest your time and money (both of which are valuable) into a career that would be a better investment. Just my two cents' worth, based on 40 years in the field. Whatever you do, good luck to you. I hope you find what you are looking for. If you really are determined that MT is your thing, then I would recommend Andrews. Certainly not M-TEC in its present incarnation and absolutely NOT the matchbook schools. Again, good luck!

My Countdown Will Soon Begin
Sep 04, 2012

I'm very excited to venture out of the home, moving in a direction I will be appreciated by someone and feel I have a purpose.  It is not a pleasant job for most, but I am pleased and excited I chose it.  I have finished my CNA course and take my state test tomorrow bright and early.  If I pass, I will be on a journey for new employment in about two weeks.  From there, my education will continue and most likely it will be paid.  I will also have the opportunity to g ...

Let The Nickpicking Begin.
Jan 10, 2013

well, I have now begun to experience the petty QA dings.   A lab value "of" vs lab value "is", and removal of a comma.  And in one report, three terms that are easily found were blanked as if QA did not know what they were.  Well I knew!  Man, I am so glad I am out of here. ...

Friend Wants To Know...Where To Begin?
Jun 25, 2013

I have a friend who is a nurse who wants to get into medical transcripting. Since she has a lot of background, she doesn’t think it would take her long. I had a bad experience with the company that trained me, so I was wondering what you guys would recommend for her? Do you know of any companies that train then give live work or know of a low-cost school?I let her know that most companies require 3 years experience, so do you know of anyone who hires fresh MTs?Thanks in advance! ...

This Is How They Will Begin Dumping US MTs.
Dec 04, 2014

Those getting 99.49 or not getting line count will be out the door.  This is how they will dump us.  In comparison to India and Korea, we are over paid numbers, not people.  This company has lost all values where their US employees are concerned.  Wonder what the CEOs bonus will be this year for running the company into the ground?  Good work Sir.  Can you say greed? ...

Let The Debate Begin

Here's my dilemma.  QA/audit/whatever says that Alzheimer disease is the proper usage.  Webmd, Mayo, NIH, and the disease webites, alz.com Alzheimer's website says it is Alzheimer's disease.  Same thing with Parkinson's (pdf.org), Crohn's (CCFA.org) etc., etc.  Always the apostrophe regardless.  What is everyone else doing and have you been corrected one way or the other?  ...

Do You Think That As The Economy Improves That Industry Wide Salaries Will Begin To Improve?
Sep 22, 2010

I know and accept the fact (albeit grudgingly) that ASR and offshoring are the wave of the future, but do you think that as the economy improves that things will cycle and what we do will once again become valued with the recognition of our value being reflected in higher salaries?  Or do you think that the unhappy reality is that regardless of the economy salaries will either remain stagnant or continue to trend downward? Thanks in advance for your input. ...

MT Career
Jul 21, 2010

Just doing a little survey here:  Do you think the medical transcriptionist is becoming more and more obsolete?  I have been in the field for a long time and have already lost a couple of jobs due to technology or work being contracted out.  It seems to be the one job I was always able to find as there was also a need, especially if you're experienced.  Nowadays, we're talking VR, editors, etc. etc. and the pay is not getting any better.  Personally, I have alw ...

My MT Career Is Done.
Jun 30, 2011

I am just a little fish in a big pond, very rarely posted here, but loved to read the posts!  I felt though I had to post tonight as I am very sad. For the last 15 years, I was an MT, but tonight was my last shift and typed my last report - a discharge summary. Same thing I started on all those years ago.  My account is going VR on July 1, and I was told my wage would go from 9 cents a line to 4 cents.  No matter how they crouch it in rah-rah terms (increased produc ...

From the perspective of someone with experience in the coding field, would you recommend coding as a career or would you suggest possibly RHIA? I would appreciate ...

Considering MT Career... Should I Do It?

Hi everyone, this is my first post.  I am a military wife, so I'm hoping to start a career where I can work from home.  For now I would only want to work part-time since I have a young child at home, but it would be nice to have the option to work full-time someday.  I've been thinking about becoming a MT for a while now, but lately I've been discouraged because it looks like the job growth has slowed considerably in recent years.  I'm looking into the Car ...

New MT Looking For New Career!!! HELP!
Apr 08, 2013

Well, I wish I would have looked at this forum before going to MT school.  I tried working for two different MT companies.  First one I hated the platform/pay and the second one I really liked the account and platform but my work wasn't "clean enough" and they let me go after two weeks. I think I got canned because I questioned some QA redlines and was told I was wrong (no, no comma.  Yes, you put a comma.  That's hypenated.  No, not hypenated.)  I even ha ...

What Happened To MT Career?
Jun 04, 2010

I am reading on this board and seeing that people from Medquist are being let go, places are being bought out, hospitals are selling in-house to the outside services now.  The services charge a decent amount of money to these hospitals, but we see pennies of it.  What is sad is that what we do is very important, yet we are treated like all we do is type words (and anyone who has done ESL docs know it isn't just words - it's format, it's incorrect pronunciation, inco ...
