The Ongoing Saga with M*Modal - Kicking&Screaming

Posted: Jul 21, 2012

Here we goooooo!  Yesterday another meeting with the HIM manager and CEO quality at our hospital who has recently signed a contract to outsource MTs to M*Modal.

Well, my only interest in the meeting was to find out from HR my options regarding severance, unemployment, etc.  Clearly the managers in attendance are in the honeymoon phase with M*Modal and even had the gall to say she went to a site (forgive me for not remembering) and found M*Modal had 3.8 employee satisfaction with 5 being highest!  I about fell out of my chair laughing.  She clearly is so delusional that it's just not worth my breath any longer, as really the contract has now been sent to corporate for final signature.  Anyway, I just found it very interesting that employee satisfaction could be that high at M*Modal when almost everything you read on here is downright pitiful regards how the MTs are satisfied/treated.  The CEO lady even offered up a meeting with Greg Boles who is the M*Modal rep currently at our hospital.  I am just about to jump out of my hide with excitement to be able to challenge him on what he has to say, but I have a tendency to let my mouth overload my a**!  LOL

I am putting a lot of trust in this site to back me up on my words to this M*Modal guy, and would really appreciate any input good or bad that I can challenge him on, input from the real workers who go through this living hell every day.  Thanks all!  I have the opportunity to confront someone from M*Modal and I want to make the best of it.  Who knows if it will do any good, but it will sure make me feel better.

The employee satisfaction survey - txmt

is probably right at 3.8. Most people that are satisfied and happy do not come on this website and post. They are busy working. You most likely will see more negative comments than positive ones because everyone needs to vent when they are having problems. I am fairly satisfied with my job at MM and I rarely post because I am usually working, but thought I would check it out today while I was off. Hope things are not so bad for you as it is for others. Good luck.

I agree... - I am satisfied about

[ In Reply To ..]
3.8 out of 5 worth. Not the greatest situation in the world, but not bad for me either. I guess it really depends on what you need out of a job, but I am close to retirement and plan to stick it out if possible.

I would probably rate as a 5 if it weren't for the - anon

issue of poor pay.

You could ask for proof that ASR doubles your production - becuase it certainly does not

[ In Reply To ..]
I used to bring home $1400 every pay period (2 weeks) before ASR. Now, I bring home $700 every two weeks. This is not because I am lazy. I seriously am working my behind off.

Additionally, you could ask why they feel it is more productive for an employee to jump between 15 and 20 accounts a day (all with different "lengthy" client profiles), and not kept on 1-2 accounts where you become familiar with the dictators.

You could also ask why some employees run out of work daily, and others are on mandatory overtime every single week.

You could also ask what the exact job is of the CCM, becuase answering e-mails from the MTs is certainly not in their job description!

Me too -- working harder for half the pay. - Hate ASR

[ In Reply To ..]
I wish I had never heard of ASR. It ruined a decent profession (at least for me).

second that for sure - - ASR sucks

You have to remember that the number of MTs who post/read here is but a teeny tiny drop in the Mmodal bucket. There are many of us who are happy, or at least satisfied if not happy.

The tendency for this site is for the negative to continue to rise to the top. So please don't base your opinion on ANY company based on what you read here. These companies all have happy/content worker bees, they just don't bother to come say they are happy.

Plus many people have not found this site. - nm

I have to pleasantly disagree with "So please don't base your opinion on ANY company on what you read here." Many of the MTs who post here with negative posts once were happy and at least satisfied, but things change in their status which is not always justified. I for one like to know about those situations.

The saying things can change in a New York minute is so true with this company and those who are happy today may not be tomorrow. At least if you come to this board you are exposed to the many possibilities that can affect your contentment with the job. Like with anything else, there are some who do just post to "stir the pot," but there are many on here who have legitimate complaints and just because you haven't been affected by any of it don't tell someone else to overlook this board.

The rating may include non-MTs. - nm

I would think you will put yourself in a bad light - arguing points that you picked up

[ In Reply To ..]
on an annonomous board. It's really no different than management telling you it's going to be okay. No matter what you argue, the bottom line is $$. The hospital is looking for lowest cost. Unfortunately, it's so common now. Also, it's not just MModal. If you're used to working inhouse hourly, you're in for a shock if you're going to enter the remote environment with any company. Good luck what ever happens.

ASR is horrible - I have been on it since 2004

[ In Reply To ..]
It hasn't improved. Our QA team lead sent a memo the other day on a new account. ASR was putting "Final Recommendations" as a header when the doctor was clearly saying "Plan and Recommendations." QA requested it to be fixed and the ASR guru said since some people were leaving it as "Final Recommendations" and some were changing it, ASR was "confused" and couldn't learn. ??? In other words, it never will, as long as different people are typing different things.

Get ready to work every holiday - If you are scheduled to work

[ In Reply To ..]
the day of the holiday, you have to work. Period. Unless you can get your CCM to approve a day off. Good luck with that.

I used to make $25 an hour....easily - now I am struggling to make

[ In Reply To ..]
$14. Have gone through all my savings and thinking will probably lose my house. Lots of MTs on here qualify for food stamps. It's all about the bottom line now, quantity over quality. Good luck. Hope you can find other work at your hospital. You'd probably be better off.

I don't know... - I just recently checked out

[ In Reply To ..]
the jobs posting for one of my local hospitals and the only jobs I would have a shot at started at about $14 an hour and went up to about $22 an hour and had a long list of what sounded to me like aggravating duties. I make about 15 now, so I guess I should be happy.

I appreciate all that posted regards my concerns with M*Modal. I know there will always be situations or differences in a company the size of M*Modal, and frankly the ultimate goal here was to gain information from actual workers as they are, in my opinion, the ones who know what it is really like. Saying that, I do not find much positive about M*Modal and I just feel that my employer doesn't have a clue. I am up and down, sideways, and on standing on my head with each day I breathe thinking that I will have to seek another profession. I just find it very hard to think I go from being paid for my worth and being treated like the professional that I am, to just another MT who tried to stick it out and ended up in a living hell. As before ladies, I appreciate each of your opinions and I do wish the best for each of you.
Good luck to you too. I know it is hard and change is not all - that easy, but the sooner you
[ In Reply To ..]
accept it and make the decision to go with it or move on, the more at peace you will be. Believe me, we've all been there, done that. Sadly, your management isn't thinking about you or quality right now, but rather cost and how to cut those costs. It's all to common these days.
And furthermore, - unless you are planning to
[ In Reply To ..]
MT, ME or now "clinical documentation specialist" field altogether, you probably won't do much better. They all suck pretty much to one degree or another.

I have a feeling you are hoping you can "change" the hospitals mind.

I understand your situation completely, been there myself, but I hate to break it to you that the hospital just does not care.

They are looking at the bottom line and nothing you say to them matters. They also probably could care less if you decide to go with MM or not. We are not valued employees. We are cogs in the wheel of business and this decision is about $$.

I worked in-house for a hospital that went with MQ and when MQ did a bad job they just rotated through a bunch of different MTSOs and ended up back with MQ in the end. They never even considered bringing in-house MTs back.

It's all over but the crying.

This might be why satisfaction was 3.8 - (see message)

[ In Reply To ..]
Could it be because M*Modal was previously a pretty good company, but then Medquist bought it and took their name? There are certainly things on the internet that pop up when you google them, but they're several years old if you stop and notice the date it was posted.

One place I've seen employees' numbered ratings like that on the internet is Glassdoor. I've noticed that approximately 3 (out of 5) seems to be a very common satisfaction rating, by the time you average the super-happy employees with the terribly unhappy ones. After all the things you read here on MTStars about M*Modal in its current state of Medquist merged with the former M*Modal, I have a hard time believing that they would earn a 3.8 satisfaction rating.

I agree that there is likely no stopping your hospital from going to M*Modal at this stage. It doesn't sound like it's necessarily your aim to try to convince them not to, but rather that you want to gain some insight to be able to ask about known problems others have encountered...maybe just to make 'em squirm, which I can't blame you for! They certainly deserve to have to squirm.

I was in your shoes (my long-time hospital job outsourced to an MTSO), but we MTs didn't even know what was about to hit us--we didn't get nearly the warning that you've gotten. We only had 6 days to make a decision whether or not to take the job with the MTSO. Your experience may vary, of course, but I would suggest that you be working on finding a different job a.s.a.p. I would've given anything to have been given that advice before it was too late.

Best of luck.

You hit the nail on the head. Thanks for the input as well. I know I'm not going to change their minds but I will enjoy the "squirming". I now remember what the site the supervisor quoted and that is Career Bliss where she found the 3.8 rating. Well, the name of the site says it all. Really would they post negative ratings on "Career Bliss"?? I think not. I've gathered enough backup and will be waiting with baited breath to confront the M*Modal person who will be offering us jobs. It's time to roll!!! You all have a wonderful week and take care.

M*Modal Saga - okcmt

My story is similar. I used to work for a smallish company in my hometown. One day, out of the blue, we were all called into the main office for a manditory meeting. We were informed that the transciption department was being done away with in one month and positions were offered to us at Medquist. Needless to say, we were all shocked! In short, they lied about everything. I started out with a few of the same accounts but those quickly dried up and I was moved to a new area. This was 2 years ago. I don't mind my accounts so much now, just hate it when the work is low then getting totally unfamiliar ones. Plus, I make about 50% less than I did at my old job. My husband has been out of work for awhile so we rely (too much sometimes) on my in-laws to help us out. I guess I am lucky I still have a house and food to put on the table but most days I feel like crying. I just want to be able to do my job, which I think I do pretty well, make a decent living and not be micromanaged. This company lies and will always lie.......just my opinion.

I thought they were 2 different services.  Everyone is buying out everyone, so who knows.  All the small companies have been merged I guess.  I thought Nuance was out of New York and were the primary with VR.  Maybe one has to keep up with the changes and be a member and pay the dues and go to the meetings with AAMT and be a CMT to keep up with the changes, even though you still get 4 cents. ...

M*Modal VR
Sep 25, 2010

I have another question.  When one does a draft in VR, does MT get paid for all lines in the draft or would an MT get paid if it has to be edited.  I will be trying to learn this in the next few weeks and I am scared to death I will not catch on and then I might be without a job.   I have a feeling I might not get paid for the whole draft report.  Then again it may depend on the company.  Any opinions please.   Thanks  ...
