Please help. What would you do? Been with the Q for 10 years. In the same boat as - Just Me

Posted: Jan 13, 2010

everyone else here. You know the deal. Anyhow, I am only flex part-time and consistently bring home about 250 every 2 weeks.

About 6 weeks ago I landed another job. It's an IC  job, though. Pays on-time, pretty good work load. Again, very part-time there. But between the 2 jobs, I feel I'm overextending myself. Why can't I just let go of the Q??? What the heck am I holding on to? I know if I quit MQ, I can dedicate more time and energy to this new job as it seems I can work as much as I can. No time clock. I get emails constantly for signing in late with MQ and have even been performanced management for such in the past. I am NOT good with the time clock. Been doing a lot better this year, though. Wanted to start the new year off right.

Would you quit the Q? Same line rate at new place. I'm worried that I will get "let go" at my new job (there is no indication of that, however) AFTER I quit the Q. I can't seem to let go.

What would you do?

You've mentioned lots of things in the "con" list and nothing in the "pro" list for staying with the Q. You read the board. You know the direction the Q is headed. I'd bail in a heartbeat. It's a no-brainer.

Well, the pro is the 250.00 every 2 weeks! LOL nm - Just Me

If the new job will let you work as much as you want - you can easily make up the 250 from the Q. The new job will probably be more stable in the long run, and you can work the hours you want without any hassle.

Change is scary, but this one sounds pretty good to me. Life is more than work.
The Clock - MT

Well, you may have to at some point learn to live with a clock. Most of the world lives with a clock--I would work on that before your other employer needs you on some sort of a clock, or you need to work somewhere else that requires a clock. It's part of life, part of being mature and grown up. Nobody likes a clock, but we have to deal with it. It's life. Not being mean, just trying to help you realize that the world uses a clock.

Anyway, I think you stay with the Q because it's familiar--I stayed a long time after I really wanted to leave. People stay in all sorts of horrible situations for familiarity. I finally left the Q, having nothing to do with a clock. I respect an employer's wish for me to stick to a schedule so they know where they stand. However, I left because I stopped making money.

Whatever you settle for? - Bunion

Don't sell us short, please. You are worth more than what they give you to only run out sooner or later and be stuck. Think about it. Thanks

I'm in the same boat, Just Me. Here is what I think.... - Another me

I work flex-time as well, about $250 a payday. I finally decided to get an IC job, and I did. Great company. The work was good for the first year, and I worked both jobs thinking that one of these days I'd quit MQ.

Jump ahead till last August or Sept, and the work started to dry up with the IC job. I still like them, but there's been hardly anything to do. THANK GOODNESS I didn't quit the Q. I still don't like them much, but they usually seem to need help when I need the work. So having them to fall back on has been fine.

So my advice is, unless they're really stressing you out (the Q), stick with it as a good backup. I personally haven't had a problem working for two companies, and I like the idea that there is probably work for me somewhere about 85% of the time.

Best of luck to you.

I have to agree.... - Dinosaur

with Shipwrecked. You will probably make more money, not to mention the convenience of your schedule. Should you run out of work in your new job, I am pretty sure the Q would hire your back.

I have read your posts and you are a good person. I know you will land on your feet. Myself, I just will stick it out, I am close to retirement, and I have my eye on a very sweet beach in the South Pacific to live out the remainder of my days.

You are strong, you will be fine.

Can I come to the beach with you? We'll have to live in a grass hut, since Social Security won't allow us anything better. And I'll have to go on a major diet to fit into my bikini! The Q will be a thing of the past, and as dementia sets in, we might not even remember it.

Absolutely, you are most welcome to join me. With any luck we will forget the Q ever happened.

I work part-time at the Q, 24 hours a week. I took on a part-time IC position a year and a half ago and do about 15 to 20 hours per week.

It is very hard to work both. I took the IC because I was constantly running out of work at the Q and wanted a back up. Now, a year and a half later, the IC job lost a large account that supplied about 1/2 my income.

I almost left the Q several times as the IC wanted me full-time and quite frankly, I was sick of all the changes and rules, and no work at the Q and almost quit.

Something also made me stay. I don't know what the hold is. I guess at this time I am glad I did not leave because of the loss of work on the IC, I would seriously be struggling if that were my only job.

It is a very hard decision. I am staying with both because I am scared. I am using both jobs as a security blanket right now. It is stressful, I have put on about 50 pounds in the past year and a half from just sitting at this desk, but I don't know what else to do.

I feel for you and know your confusion. I hope you are at peace with whatever your decision is.

I quit the Q 11 after years of service, over half of those were when there were offices we worked in. It was hard at first, then *why didn't I do that sooner?* light bulb.

I left the Q and took 2 IC jobs part time. Got a call from MQa few months later to come back with a raise, so I went back as flex. For 2 years, I worked 3 jobs as part-time (one IC was only overflow, not every day)with the idea to eventually quit the Q. A few months later, one IC job lost the account to India and there was no other work. Luckily, 2 weeks later, that account came back, but after that, the other IC job lost accounts so that is totally gone. You have many options, but unless you can weather an IC losing your account and have no pay for a bit, I would stick with both. If the income is not a problem, it's totally a preference for what you want to do.

Hard to let go of the familiar, but I left and am HAPPY I did. - Good luck!

WEIGH YOUR OPTIONS - Been There

One of the things to consider with your IC job is the fact that you must pay the whole Social Security tax yourself, and file an estimated income form and send in taxes quarterly. Plus, you don't receive PTO [albeit if you are Flex, you probably don't receive it now].

Same Boat, Different Storm

Am I ever going to get off 100% QA!  Q in all their wisdom takes away (or loses) good or decent accounts, gives us cesspool ESL dictators and incomprehensible blather dicators or just plain old various crud to try to make heads or tails of and then scolds us for not maintaining 98%!!! What galls me is those "reply mandatory" e-mails they send just to rub in how incompetent they think I am, how unworthy I am to be working for them...  THEY can't even keep up with each client profi ...

I Know We Are All In The Same Boat, But Pathetic...SM
Oct 12, 2011

I know there are a lot of us in the same boat, but I am just so frustrated after turning my invoice in. Back in May of this year I was turning in invoices for 3 times the amount I turned in today. I was so excited because I thought I was going to hit a decent amount but about puked this morning from the lack of money. I wish I could work just ONE job that would be enough income coming in, instead, I have to have 3 and feel like I never get away from the computer and don't even come close ...

After Years And Years Of Being IC, Obtained Employee Status At A Co. Sm
Nov 26, 2012

Thought that after not having enough work for a couple years now and always chasing work, I'd now have a "real job" as an employee and wouldn't have to worry about a steady paycheck and paying the bills anymore. The reason I thought this was because at the interview and in their professional company emails, they use all the "real job" words:  Shift, scheduled hours, overtime, PTO, benefits, etc.  I felt relieved to finally have a "job." What a big bunch of BS! I was "hired" ...

3 Years. Question: How Many More Years Do You Plan To Be An MT/editor?
Dec 20, 2013

There is much speculation about the field of transcription - how many of us actually plan to be here 5 years, 10 years, 20 years from now. I realize that the field is going to change, which will contribute to your answer. Will there be enough transcriptionists/editors to fill the need in 5 years and in 10 years? Will the industry be forced out of offshoring because of taxes? Will there be a need even for editors if VR gets better? These are all unanswered questions, but my question is, what ...

Lately, I've been getting legal notices mailed to my home from I believe the east coast somewhere informing me of a class action lawsuit against M*Modal and inviting me to joint if I have a claim.  I don't think I have a claim, but then again with all the shady practices in this business, I'm not so sure.  I'm just curious what the heck is going on. Have Not Had A Raise In 5 Years.
Jul 25, 2011

I am tier III and I still am not at top pay. Today I asked my CCM for a raise and she said she will put in the paperwork. Why do I feel I still will be denied even though I have met all the requirements. More than likely I will be denied because they do not want any MT to make above minimum wage.
