On a serious note - sm

Posted: Jan 29, 2015

I, like most of you, am not happy with this mandatory shift change that has messed up my life. I am job hunting. I find very few things, if any, that I am qualified for with my experience with MT work. Basically I need to know if I am missing something in my search and if anyone can guide me towards something in the job market. Retraining is not an option at this point unless it is on the job training.

I am like you. There are very few things other than typing and knowing the medical jargon that I am capable of doing. While I'm not an old geezer, lol, I'm also not a young chick and the thought of a career change is scaring the pants off me. But I am so disgusted and distraught over what MM has become. my kids are encouraging me to go back to school and say I can do it. But the medical profession is all I've ever done for well over 20 years now. Do you want to continue to work at home?

Job hunting - Good luck

If you want to continue to work at home, your choices are going to be limited. Otherwise:
Veterinary assistant (might train you on the job)
Medical records clerk
Administrative Assistant
Retail
Check with your local Skill Source office, they have classes to help you brush up on your office skills, free of charge.
It depends on what you think you would like to do. Why is retraining not an option?

What kind of a shift change is it? If it's a matter of starting later in the day, I personally would tough it out. I started a new job and my hours were changed too. I don't like it but there's nothing better out there which pays as well. I'm going to retire earlier than I had wanted to protect my sanity. A new job may be worse, that is all I am saying.

Have you checked into a scribe position. Don't think they get paid a lot but something that you qualify for

Scribes worse than MT - TXMT

Recent posting for ER scribe position here in Texas:
12 hour shifts
Must be able to stand for long periods of time while holding tablet and following ER physician.
Must pass vision and hearing exam.
Alternating weekend shifts.
$8 an hour.
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!!!

honestly - true stuff

i am afraid there just isn't much out there. every now and then i see an MT job posted for my area but it always looks like the pay is no more than 10 bucks an hour, which granted is more than i'm making here at MModal right now, but when you figure in the travel time and gas money, it just never seems worth checking out. i thought about walmart and mcdonalds but they are no better than Mmodal. at least here i don't have to stand all day and save money on gas.

thank you all - sm

I think it is time to get out of my house. If I am going to make a change I am going to make a change, totally..I did apply for a couple of positions for vet receptionist with the hope of working my way into helping more with the animals. Gotta get a foot in the door. I don't need bennies so I am praying I can find a vet that will trade that for some help caring for my dogs various medical needs. Thought about sub teaching as well..what ya think? I love kids and I hear its pretty steady work.

You have a degree in teaching and you're doing MT? - sm

I'd try to get back to teaching/subbing ASAP. Great hours, lots of time off, steady work, etc. Can't beat that!

Here locally our police dept has transcriptionists, and they were impressed with the fact that I can already transcribe and type! I haven't heard back yet, but am hopeful. Worth a shot
I have an AS degree in my first career - sm

has nothing to do with teaching but all they want is a degree in anything.

Open Note From An MME
Feb 13, 2010

I have come on this site for awhile, mostly because this is a place where everyone gets what you do and can understand what you're going crazy over. Try telling your neighbor the ESLs are getting to you today and you get what I mean. However, since I have become an MME (in October), this has become a not so friendly place. I love doing QA work. I have been in this field for 20 years and feel I can and do help MTs out. When I make a correction, it's to give the MT some feedback, ...

Before you send in an essay with your name on it.  Think long about it.  There are a couple of issues: 1.  Taxes.  Think about how much you will have left after the taxes are taken out.  It won't be 1000 dollars.  2.  There are those of you on here talking about a union.  If any of you are serious about a union -- DO NOT sing praises about ANY MQ POLICIES.  It will come back to haunt you. 3.  Remember exactly what is going on in MQ r ...

A Note I Received
Jul 27, 2010

While on Facebook last night, I mentioned about going back to school to be a vet tech. and one of the things I mentioned was that it was work that would NOT be oursourced to India. Some guy from India sent me a message asking what was wrong with sending work to India. So I told him how it has decimated the careers of American MTs, how American MTs often can't even earn a living wage because they are competing with the low wages paid to Indian MTs. I could have said more to him, but I left i ...
