hypocracy of MTs working on holidays - .

Posted: Jan 02, 2012

Dictator apologized to the family for not spending more time with them when they found out a young loved one had terminal cancer. 12/24 visit. I seriously had to get up and walk around and cry before I could finish the report.

My best friend was diagnosed with the same disease before Thanksgiving last year. Her demise was inevitable, but what was left of her quality of life was compromised by the lack of health care personnel, including her PCP, during to the holidays.

I find it ironic that it is so important for transcriptionists to work holidays to provide "quality patient care," but the hands-on health care providers are not held to the same standard, all the way up to and incuding the physician.

Amen. Hospitals and nursing homes work with - wannie

skeleton crews on holidays. Neither do they (as a general rule) schedule major tests or surgeries on the weekends, but the MT has to work to transcribe that STAT discharge summary for a patient that was discharged 3 months earlier, lol. Before anybody crawls my case, I know health care is a 24/7 profression and I know we MTs have to work weekends, nights, evenings, days, holidays, etc.

Weekends and holidays - Anonymous

Anyone who thinks doctors work 8-hour days, 5 days a week is mistaken. There are many nights and weekends involved, particularly for surgeons; in group practices they take call for each other, I promise that doctors worked on Christmas. Nurses generally work three 12-hour shifts, try that the next time you are feeling that you are being taken advantage of. They don't pack it up and leave at night, and they're always around on weekends and holidays. I work weekends to transcribe emergency room reports and history and physicals for Monday's surgeries. I work on site, so don't think you are being singled out because you work at home.

Agree so much on this. When I worked in clinical - in a hospital, there was no

skeleton crew. The number of nurses that come in is based on how many patients there are. Some hospitals give holiday pay, but lots now are not as it is seen as a regular working day. It would not be cost effective for a hospital to schedule elective radiographic imaging or labs on a holiday as how may people do you think are going to want to have this done on a holiday. When I worked in the hospital, it was in the unit. These doctors were called all hours of the night and expected to make major decisions. If the patient was really sick, they may get called multiple times.

I have seen doctors stay with patients a good portion of the night after they have been in surgery all day and have to go back to work the next day. These are things that MTs do not see. They don't realize Dr. Surgeon was getting ready to watch his kids open Christmas gifts when an emergency surgery rolls through the ER doors. I guess the positive for the MTs is that most who have to work weekends or holidays have a day off through the week.
Thanks for the reality check, guys. Working isolated - can really warp that worldview. NM

choice of practitioners - mt2

Must be your choice/her choice of practitioners. I work for three different oncology offices in various parts of the country and every single one of them has someone working the holiday. My own personal physician is always a phone call away for emergencies.

So I'm not sure where you live but from my view of the world, there *are* many physicians and healthcare givers who work during and on the holiday. In fact, never heard one of them refuse.

I do the same, but all 3 offices I work for are closed - sm - ONCMT

for the holidays. For the first time in ages I had 6 days off (in a row), total miracle, and 3 off this weekend, offices closed today too. Doing much needed cleaning instead of working a 14 hour day weekdays and 8-12 hours on Saturday and Sunday(yes 7 days a week). I am glad they are off, I needed the break as I rarely get a day off (maybe 2 days a year except for the 5-6 days I take to visit relatives, but then usually work at least one account while away). I have a friend who might otherwise be interested in MT but as her sister does MT (which got me interested years ago), another friend, and I do, she says no way, none of you have a life. Totally agree with her. She likes her weekends free and not to work half the night as well. I have been trying to be more efficient so I can have some free time (LOL) but 2 of my docs dictate anytime, late hours, early morning, Friday night, on the weekends (due Monday morning), so the MT is I think more abused than doctors or nurses. One of my docs did dictate up a storm while I was away, on a day the clinic was closed, but others in the group took care of it as I was on my 3-day vacation, otherwise it would have just been 3-days off instead of 6. Granted we perform an important function but it can border on ridiculous sometimes. A fellow MT has a doc that stats everything. He will do a report from 3 weeks ago, stats it since he was too lazy to do it on time, even stuff from that day, each report is a stat (and it is not in reality). Sucks for her, 2-hour TAT. They have talked to him, he still does it. --My docs are still on call, just their offices are closed. So far I have been lucky this weekend with no incoming work but expect something to show up at some point today and when it does my break is over until next Christmas.

Hey, be happy our care at least is still in this country - and not in India

A recent article in the Denver paper reported a fire in a hospital in India. The fire started in the basement. It took the fire department 20 hours to get there. In the meantime, all the physicians fled the building. Many of the patients died and it was only the ancillary personnel and bystanders who attempted to get them out.

I Am Not Working Any More Holidays!
Oct 23, 2010

Got denied for Thanksgiving request.  I have put my life on hold for this company for 15 years.  I have missed Christmases, Thanksgivings, family functions and fireworks and for what? To sit at my desk and wait for the work to trickle in? Or no jobs at all.    I am not working another single holiday for this company. Let the Indians work them. I am not even sending in a request for them; I am just going on with my plans. What are they gonna do, send my work to India? Fi ...

Working Holidays As An Employee (sm)
Oct 05, 2010

I have never been "required" to work holidays as a SE or IC, so I am wondering how the work loads are when you are an employee.  I was recently offered a PT job as an employee, but I was told if I was scheduled to work, I would have to work.  Well this year would have been both Thanksgiving and Christmas, which would really put a damper on my family gatherings.  Checking in every few hours would not be a problem, but actually missing Thanksgiving dinner at my mom's would be d ...

Question About Working Holidays...
May 28, 2012

If you run out of work for over 15 minutes, you're supposed to fill out a ticket & take the rest of the day off, without even checking to see if work comes in later?  Won't they be mad that you didn't check back since it's a holiday?  But then on the other hand, if they've made you clock out & take PTO instead, then I guess you couldn't check back even if you wanted to...?  I don't really understand the point in making everyone work holid ...

Why Do They Always Do This Right Before The Holidays?
Nov 24, 2009

Just got word from the hospital where my full-time coding job is that we will be laying off and/or terminating employees, eliminating positions and changing others.  Why, oh why, do companies always do this around the holiday time? It gets more and more sad and more frightening daily, doesn't it, seeing more and more good people out of work and such a lack of prospects for employment.   ...

Crappy Holidays To Us All
Sep 30, 2010

Just got the email today that effective 10/01/2010, my MTSO (whom I will not name) will no longer be paying holiday pay (aka 1.5 cpl) for any holidays anymore b/c of "the economy." R U *** kidding me? First of all, I thought that the recession was officially over in 2009, but I could be mistaken. Secondly, I know holiday pay and OT and all that is a "perk" and not required by law to pay us, but yet they expect us MTs, er me, to work all major holidays for the same crappy cpl as always ...

Never Got So Much As A Happy Holidays From The Q.
Jan 06, 2011

I don't need some gift (that wasn't worth the money they paid postage on). It just would have been nice to at least send out a company email wishing us a happy holidays. That would have only cost them the money it would have taken some salaried person to type it up and sned it out which is really nothing as that person would have been paid whether they did that or not. Guess 'cause we're an Indian company and that is not one of their holidays. What would have been appreci ...

Happy Holidays Everybody!
Dec 19, 2012

Just wanted to say Happy Holidays to everybody and hope they have a great time and a great holiday! This was our first time decorating and shopping as well as sending cards and stuff in over 7 years due to severe pain and financial issues. It feels so good to do normal things during the holiday this year, although it took numerous doctors appointments to do so. I felt so good when my cousin emailed me that my grandma was searching her mailbox everyday and nobody had sent a card yet, but me... s ...
