Holidays for Nuance-Work or take PTO - ready to retire

My company was bought by Nuance. We are now told we either have to work entire shift on a holiday or take PTO. Is everyone being told this? Are the other big companies going this route too? It was bad enough having hlidays with no pay, but now, to work or take what little PTO is accumulated?

Any suggestions!

For Thanksgiving I was not given a choice. I was told I HAD to work. We did get paid holiday pay. I have worked the last 8 years, every holiday because of the way my schedule fell. This is the first time I have Christmass Eve off (have to work Christmas Eve day) and I do not know how to act...I'll show up on the 6:00 news.

I currently work for Nuance but will be leaving soon as I got a new job with Transcend because I needed to be able to work via satellite internet, and Transcend BeyondTXT platform is compatible with satellite. Anyways, this is the first year they have required you to work full shift. It was just work half your shift, preferably the first half. Of course, if you didn't work the whole shift though you were out that money. They do offer .02 cpl incentive for working on major holidays if that makes you feel any better. But now, apparently, they have changed it to where you are required to work your whole shift if your work day falls on a holiday.

I really feel for you MTs who are forced to work holidays - even when there is no work available

I work for a small (or medium, depending on how you look at it) sized MTSO with 100+ MTs. We get generous PTO, get paid for holidays whether you work them or not (up to you and you get paid on top of holiday pay), and on top of that a twice a year bonus based on production. We are certainly not REQUIRED to work on any holiday. I guess these "nationals" have just put the "fear" in a lot of MTs. I actually "attempted" to work for a couple of them over the years (been an MT/QA for over 25 years), definitely not for me with the time clocks, 8000 emails a day, must be available 24/7 by IM, etc. Right now, I am counting my blessings. While I may not get rich as an MT, I am feeling very, very fortunate. Happy Holidays to all my fellow MTs!

I just started for a new MTSO, and I like their holiday policy. You are assigned a group, and you must work 3 of the holidays. The holidays rotate, so this year I am off Christmas, next year I will work. But on your holiday to work, you only have to work 4 hours, and you can choose the hours, all 4 at once or split into 2 hours/2 hours. If you check and get no work, you DON'T have to check back, just document it and you are done! They also do not pay automatically for the holiday, BUT your PTO accrues faster so you can choose to use your PTO, your choice.

not everyone has to work the holiday just because it's a holiday. It depends upon where it falls during the week and in my schedule.

Some of us clocked in to find no work available yet we had to check in every hour, essentially giving up our Christmas Day only to have to flex on our off day to make up for the lack of work today.

This was my first holiday at Nuance and other than next Sunday, will likely be my last. I didn't mind working as I realize that hospitals don't close on holidays but I do mind having to sit here and do nothing while my family was having Christmas and then having to work my regular day off as well.

I am the OP. I am sitting here today, checking in, no work in either of 2 accounts. I am going to recommend to my supervisor that they do the holiday rotation thing, work 3 of 6, so at least we have a chance of being with our family. This is so sad! A skeleton crew could have managed this amout of work and some MTs could have been with their family. Please NUANCE MTs, please ask for some changes. In my heart of hearts, I guess I really do not expect it to change.

I work for Nuance now but it's not the only company who has done this. I used to work for Medquist and they did it, too. To clarify, if you worked Sunday through Thursday dayturn you would be expected to work Christmas Day and New Year's Day because they both fell on your regular work days. If you wanted to guarantee you would have it off, that's where using PTO comes in. However, I've found that on the holidays like that, work runs out early, if there is any to speak of, and you end up with it off anyway. The team I'm on at Nuance has actually encouraged us to get our hours in ahead of time to get a jump on the expected holiday OOW.

Just got the email today that effective 10/01/2010, my MTSO (whom I will not name) will no longer be paying holiday pay (aka 1.5 cpl) for any holidays anymore b/c of "the economy." R U *** kidding me? First of all, I thought that the recession was officially over in 2009, but I could be mistaken. Secondly, I know holiday pay and OT and all that is a "perk" and not required by law to pay us, but yet they expect us MTs, er me, to work all major holidays for the same crappy cpl as always ...

Just wanted to say Happy Holidays to everybody and hope they have a great time and a great holiday! This was our first time decorating and shopping as well as sending cards and stuff in over 7 years due to severe pain and financial issues. Dictator apologized to the family for not spending more time with them when they found out a young loved one had terminal cancer. 12/24 visit. If you run out of work for over 15 minutes, you're supposed to fill out a ticket & take the rest of the day off, without even checking to see if work comes in later? Won't they be mad that you didn't check back since it's a holiday? But then on the other hand, if they've made you clock out & take PTO instead, then I guess you couldn't check back even if you wanted to...?
