Does Anyone Out There Work 10-Hour Shifts? - Vicki
Posted: Jan 02, 2015
Do you like working 10-hour shifts? Do you get brain dead after 8 hours? Do your wrists hurt worse? How long did it take to get used to? Thanks for your input!
Tried it and for me found it hard. Maybe split - it to 5 and 5 with a break in between?

I just found it difficult and started losing focus around hour 7 knowing there were still 3 hours left. I did try splitting it into blocks of 5 and 5 with a 2 hour break inbetween. That helped some.
Yes - for about 20 years.

Three-day weekends are worth the 10 hour shifts. I love it. Just like with an 8-hour shift, you get a feel of when you need to stand up, stretch, grab some caffeine or water, and sit back down, usually after 8. No problems here. Great gig if you can get it.
Thanks! - Vickie

That's good news -- if it hasn't killed you in 20 years, I should be good for the next few years if this job lasts that long.....
No 3-day weekends ever with MQ or MM. - alphamt

I have never been able to acquire a schedule with 3 days in a row, and never weekends off. There is always a weekend day in my four 10s. Even attempting to get every-other-weekend Sun/Mon so far is not even considered. Working four 10s gets the hours done in 4 days, which I used to enjoy when the remuneration was good and the transcription a variety of work difficulty. Now it is difficult with constant editing, and I find I need more breaks. 5/5 split might sound reasonable, but it is difficult, especially with a company that does not recognize breaks, but hard on the body. Although my schedule is clearly marked 6/4 split, I do take mini-breaks and try to stay on line while doing so, to keep the workday down to 11 hours, and not more. If you have weekends off, please send me an email, if not a response here.

on age and general health. I feel more comfortable with several hour sessions with long breaks between.

I did 6 hours in the past and found that plenty. Wouldn't try more than that.

Especially now that the standards have been raised as far as speed and accuracy, I think a long shift would be detrimental.
shorter shifts - nizer

I find more productive. Just my experience.

I actually preferred the 10-hour shift. As another poster said, I gained a feel for when it was time to stretch, etc, similar to any shift. It did take some time to get used to (no spring chicken), and those final 2 hours just dragged, but once accustomed, it was fine. I stopped it only because I did not have 3 days off in a row and that made it tough mentally.
I did and found it tough at M*Modal - because

of the keyboard monitoring and lph requirement. Also how many primaries you have make a difference (keeping those specs straight; I had 25+). And you have to remember that any extended break has to be "tacked" on to the end of your day. I also would sometimes have 1-hour of mandatory OT that would make it 11 hours.
I used to do 10 hours at a previous job and didn't find it as difficult as M*Modal. At M*Modal you're staring at a monitor for hours at a time trying not to miss that inconsequential "a" and "the" on VR. It was more tedious = more brain fatigue.
I quit a year ago, and found a small, family-owned company with a flexible IC schedule, assigned accounts, straight typing, and QA that is helpful (no grading or penalties), so there is hope!
I saw someone post they were no longer offering 12 hours to get your 8 hours work done in. Are they taking it away from the ones already on that schedule? Gulp!!! ...
I will switch to employee in a few weeks. Do they offer you certain shifts or do you pick your hours? Does everyone work weekends? How many hours per week is considered part time? Do they pay more for later shifts? Any other info ? Thanks ahead of time. ...
Hi:I am make incentive based on minutes, but I work on a system that lets me check how many lines and minutes I have typed in a day also.
Just in case I have to get another job based on lines, I wanted to know what is the average amount of lines per hour or per 8 hour shift.
Thanks for the advice in advance.

I know none of us get paid by the hour, but I was just wondering if any of you have ever figured out just how much you earn per hour, based on a 40-hour week. I'm just trying to figure out where I fit in. I seem to be earning $16-18/hour give or take based on how my week goes. ...
Does Medquist give you a shift time and expect you to be at your computer working during that shift? What are the shift times, for ex is first shift 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.? Thanx for any help you can give me. ...
There are companies, which I know have outsourced a majority of work to India, that are seeking US MTs but only for 2nd and/or 3rd shifts. Curious as to why seeing as how when it is 8:00 a.m. here (central) it is 7:00 p.m. in India and the rationale in sending all of our work to India is because companies supposedly couldn't find adequate coverage for 2nd and 3rd shifts here in the states, yet that is exactly what they are hiring for...no 1st shifts available, or very few, in the stat ...
You can't tell me that all this is because of auditing and all those let go were on 2nd and 3rd shifts. Bonus money, but no increases. Plus what accounts and what programs with horrible dictators. I am sure that it is, again, you have to walk on water. ...
Has anyone else had the call from CCM asking you to switch shifts or to move to graveyards? What have you done? I work a late split shift already Tuesday through Saturday and got a call about why I missed work (NJA). I don't think I can work a third shift and don't know how far they will push this. They said they will float me to other BOBs in order to keep me busy when they run out of work in mine. The only problem with that is that it will bring my wage ...
get is horrible. 80% of my reports this morning have been ESL's who I swear were dictating in their sleep. Slurred speech, impossible to understand. Blanks galore today. The kinda shift that makes you wonder if youeven know what you are doing. Oh well, only a little over an hour left and then I think I will go back to bed for a little bit to reset my brain.....it is fried (not to mention my nerves!). ...
Have a question on shifts. Many of the jobs on the boards say 2nd or 3rd shift. In the MT world does that mean 3 to 11 p.m. and 11 to 7 a.m. or is it 4 p.m. to 12 and 12 to 8 a.m.? I have not had a position for a straight shift before, but split my shift at my last job to get in my 8 hours. TIA. :)

I have always worked during the day and am wondering what hours are considered second and third shift. Also, if you work for someone in a different time zone, are your working hours in that time zone or your own time zone? Please explain. Thank you very much. ...

Hi..I was wondering if there is anyone here who works 3rd shift at Nuance. I have worked there for about a year and was always told the US team couldn't work past 10 EST, but lately I have seen a lot of ads from them hiring for 3rd shift. Does anyone work that shift and, if so, is there always enough work? Thanks. ...
I have noticed all these companies now are paying about 7cpl or 7.5 cpl and 3/3.5 for VR. I remember 12 years ago when I first started 7cpl was starting pay for right out of school. I eventually went up to almost 9cpl before transition to Nuance. Of course the pay went down after that and now once again. Back then 9-10cpl was seen and with MTs who had been doing it a while. Are these ads I see for 7cpl just for no experience? I see TTS does that. What if you have a lot of experience. I was makin ...
My transcription job was always paid by the hour. I was laid off and they recently offered me a temp position with them making $12.00 an hour. I was also offered a positon that pays 7.5 and 3.5 cpl. The $12.00 is employee status for a small local company I worked for over 9 years. The other is an IC position. Do you think I would make more with the $12.00 an hour or the per line production rate? I have never done production by line work so I'm not sur ...
Hi,
Does anyone know of any companies who still have 150 or 200 lph minimums? Also, does anyone know of any companies who offer 12 hour windows with employee status..besides N..been there, done that. Thanks! ...
I left a message in post to another post about the Swap (swamp) Board. I had wayyy too many hours showing I had scheduled to work. I normally only work 24 hours week (48 hours pay period or maybe 54 at the most). Mine said 66.50 hours scheduled to work. I don't recall asking to pick up that many hours here and there. My CCM said I needed to go in and reclaim the shifts???? She took off where I had approved my timesheet. But I cannot find ...
Saw 2 ads posted here alone this week, perhaps there were more. Is it me or is this blantant disregard for IRS rules for IC. These ads state specific shifts and state for IC. Aren't these chancy moves on the part of the MTSO to actually put it in print publicly? Can't they get in trouble just for that? I am wondering if things have changed in rules for IC by the IRS or if I am losing my mind. Just touching base here for a reality check.

I am curious if anyone is an at-home transcriptionist who works for a hospital and how the department covers weekend shifts/hours. Also curious what kind of hours you are required to work during the week and how many people are on the transcription team. Or if you'd just share what your company does for scheduling and what the hours are. I am looking for some ideas for our team.
Small hospital. Weekend coverage only includes priority jobs (H&Ps).

Today I made $4.22 in one hour, doing one report; however, I am not entirely disgruntled. I only left one blank and have a sample for next time. There is a sense of accomplishment when you figure out the blanks after extensive researching online. ...
I need to find a job that averages more than $10 an hour. I have 20 years' experience in med trans and am a fast typist, but with the slow platforms and the constant "breakdowns" and being out of work, I am only averaging $10 an hour. Another problem is my line counts have dropped from 250 per hour to around 100 and cannot figure out why. Any ideas? Thanks ...
