online companies - beachbum

Posted: Jun 14, 2014

I have always worked for a hospital in my area and would like to relocate to Florida so was thinking of going with an online service and am looking for some input as to the best services to apply to and the ones to stay away from.  I am single and this is my only income and cannot be without a job and good benefits.

If there is any such thing as a - good online service

[ In Reply To ..]
nobody dares divulge it on this message board unfortunately. I am looking to relocate to FL soon, but I am already used to the hell of online so it won't be so bad for me. I would think very long and hard about giving up a decent hospital job for any reason.

I don't know - about any MTSOs

[ In Reply To ..]
...but there are PLENTY of MT jobs (on site and I think home based as well) available in Florida. Check it out on Indeed.com.

DRASTIC reduction in pay (sm) - Rose

[ In Reply To ..]
This is extremely difficult for singles to support themselves on what the services pay. They have always been much lower than in-house, but with most jobs now being editing, and their false allegation that we can edit in half the amount of time it takes to transcribe, thus their only paying .02 to .045 cents per line, you are taking a huge drop in income! In general I can edit in about 75% the time it takes to transcribe. You also no longer have the full use of an expansion program, which used to increase my productivity over 30%. I think most don't pay for headings anymore, yet you have to put in more effort to find, insert and and reformat the headings. Many do not pay for spaces which is about another 20% drop in income. I don't know of any that have a good benefits package. Even if they did, you will likely not be considered full time because they keep running out of work, therefore lose the benefit of health insurance. You will be required to put in a lot of free labor with no pay, emails, studying specs for various different clients, researching demographics, etc. On one job the dictations were so short, and work in between dictations was so detailed that half my time was unpaid. Some platforms do not allow good production because they are designed only for the dictators, not the MT/MEs. For example in one I used the shortest auto backspace was an entire sentence. Try using that on a doctor who slurs all his words and it takes forever to get through the work.

If I were you I'd consider two options: (1) Approach your current employer with working for them as a contractor from FL. I think if you were to offer your services for about .12 cents per line, if they have researched outsoursing to MTSOs, they would probably think that is a good deal, although I'm not privy to what they are charging these days.
(2) Look for an in-house job in FL.

Good luck to you.

We need to eliminate the middle man - Gordon

[ In Reply To ..]
If more and more of us would approach the hospitals and clinics to work as individual ICs and eliminate the middle man, we would all win. They would be able to pay less, and we would be able to make more. Download online software like ExpressScribe and go for it! That would fix those greedy MTSOs.

I dont want to deal with faciltiy myself. I like working for - company. I like having other MTs SM

[ In Reply To ..]
available for when I cannot work. I like having someone else deal with a grouchy office manager, equipment issues, etc. I like when cable goes out, it is someone else telling the facility, not me.
And I suppose you like 4 cents a line? - MacroDiva
[ In Reply To ..]
Just be a sensible businessperson and charge enough per line to cover the cost of those aggravations. Lay down the ground rules of what you can and can't do in your contract so you can fire your client if he is truly unreasonable and difficult, and he can't fire you if you are keeping your end of the bargain.
I am happy with my pay amount in relation to how much effort I - put into this. And SM
[ In Reply To ..]
mine is the second household income. I have said many times this is a good second income job, but I would not want to be the sole income with a family to support.

But for what I need and want, it is perfect. Oh, yeah, I get paid more than 4 cpl ;and one of my jobs is paid hourly. No I will not give out names.

you won't get benefits with any of our companies, an you'll need 2+ jobs - to support yourself. work in-house. NM

[ In Reply To ..]
other poster is right - there are jobs in-house in Florida. Got for it.

FT employee WILL get bennies. Good pay, not so much. - nm

I'm talking working for mtso as an IC which is 95% of what MTSOs - hire to avoid benefits, and nationwide services

[ In Reply To ..]
not necessarily based in Florida. Her best bet is working in-house anywhere for at least the insurance. OP asked about 'online' companies...I took that to mean this MTSOs we all work for remotely.

IC anywhere gets no bennies but what they provide themselves - which, btw, are a tax write off. nm

Yes, as stated in my post above. I know this. The other one - doesnt get it. post to her please. NM

If you are IC, you buy your own bennies and they are - a tax write off. nm

Complaint - Companies With Online Applications.
Dec 17, 2010

I just cannot bring myself to spend hours filling out an online application when they already have my resume which has ALL of that pertinent information on it! I also cannot see spending considerable time filling out an online application, then waiting to see IF they respond to me, then IF they do respond with an offer to test, going through the testing to get an offer I can't accept. The online apps, though, are the #1 issue for me.  It is insane.  Through complaining.  T ...

Has Anyone Been Able To Do The Online Med Insurance
Apr 25, 2011

I was able to get onto the web site but I don't see anything there that indicates enrollment for this new UnitedHealthcare MS MRA insurance.  All of my existing elections are there, but no place can I find anything regarding open enrollment.    Have any of you guys been able to find it?  If so, please let me know.  I tried calling the "benefits" number on Friday, but I got a recording that there were closed for the holiday...LOL.  Not me....I had to work all ...

Online Applications
May 14, 2011

I just had to vent!  I am SICK AND TIRED of companies (mostly hospitals) with these l-o-n-g applications asking you to document your whole life history.  These are several pages long, and many times you are restricted to ANSWERS IN BOXES (drop-down menus) so can't enter free text.  Finally, there is NO WAY TO SAVE IT!  So you can get half or most of the way through and have to stop/pause and/or get stuck because of the dang drop-down stuff, when you can resume you h ...

Financial aid or pay as you go?   I want to work from home to supplement my income but find that most places you must be certified, have experience, etc....  I have the experience in psychiatry/p ...

Online Testing

Anyone ever test on one the MTTEST online testing sites, knew that you answered all of the questions correct on the multiple choice and fill in the blanks section, only to be told that you failed the test?  It would be one thing if you did not know the answers, but when you know the answers because it is general medical transcription knowledge that is dealt with on a day-to-day basis throughout your job, and be told the answers were wrong?  Something is wrong with this pictur ...

Wouldn't It Be Better To Take An Online

How Difficult Is An Online MT School?
Dec 23, 2009

I'm seriously considering enrolling at one of the "top two" MT online schools.  I'm good at English grammar, spelling, type over 100 wpm with 98% accuracy, a perfectionist, and am also very focused.  I do have a full-time job, but can easily devote evenings and time on the weekends to complete the course.  I'm up for a challenge, but after doing quite a bit of research, this sounds really difficult.  Feedback please! ...

Online Training BIG Gaps...
Feb 01, 2010

O.K. I'm a "senior" woman...(been 29 for years till my daughter became 30...brat) retraining in MT/Coding/Billing after lay-offs in IT. I'm finding significant gaps in my online training and I'm getting worried because I see all the job postings "must have 3 years, 2+ etc. experience" and wonder if: a) I'll be able to get a job b) have the requisite training due to gaps in coverage at my online school. I've got a million questions. I did great in terminology (98% avg) an ...

Anyone Know A Good Shorthand Online Course?
Mar 19, 2010

I finally got my study material for my administrative assistant course, but according to what I've read so far I may need to learn shorthand.  Transcribing my own scrawl is going to be a big step up from transcribing some of the dictators I've listened to, and I gotta say one good thing for my MT career, I don't need to worry about passing the keyboarding section. Anyone know where I can find a good online course for learning shorthand, that isn't too expensive?  T ...

Which Online Coding Program
Aug 17, 2010

How does one know which online coding program to take when they all seem pretty good, besides the price difference? I specifically want to know about AHIMA or Career Step from someone who has graduated and found a job. I know they have testimonials on their website, but how does one really know?  I was thinking about either their program or the one from AHIMA, which seems a lot longer, but apparently with either you will be able to sit for the credentialing exam, and they seem to be close in ...

Can You Take Online Classes For Coding?
Dec 20, 2010

I'm new to this board so bear with me.  Having been a MT forever it seems, I'm thinking of making a switch to coding. At one point I was even hired as an entry level coder, learning on the job, but when i position came open in transcription took that as it paid better. In hindsight wish I had stuck with the coding as then could have gone either or even both ways.  My problem would be having to actually "go" to a school in person , but i would want something reputable, not som ...
