assuming I already have a BA, does anyone think this would be a good alternative career choice to MT?
Not really, no. - sm

I do not think it is a good choice. It is a noble idea, some job that will help you make a difference communicating health advice to people, but the jobs are few and far between and I can promise that the pay won't be very good. This a public health kind of program, so there will be low funding.
I work for a huge nationwide healthcare system which has not one job available for anyone like that. Jobs may be available in the public health setting, but they will be few and far between.
I also noted that many of the programs were at diploma mills which will flood the market with graduates who have done third-rate copycat programs, lowering salaries, causing massive competition for jobs, and increasing scepticism about the worth of this job and applicants for it.
If you truly do want to do this, you should consider only major universities like Tufts and Boston University--programs that are AT a medical school.
Even then, my thinking is that this is the kind of program intended as a kind of filler program for students who did not get into medical school but need a graduate program to do while they are waiting to apply again. They will never get accepted if they do nothing, but the additional degree and grades help them. The program goals are not very much concerned with job placement, but just with supplying an additional degree. Public health schools have always been very popular with that crowd. In other words, this is less job-focused than it is get-a-degree focused.
Quite honestly, just in terms of job prospects, your best bet is an RHIA. The job market is outstanding and so are salaries. There is a huge variety of jobs and specialties. This is only going to increase with EHRs.
With your BA you can complete the postbaccalaureate certificate at the University of Toledo in a little over a year to sit for the RHIA exam. It is affordable and completely online. They give in-state rates to distance students. This is a state school, not a diploma mill.
Another good option would be the health informatics program at Western Governors University. It is also AHIMA-accredited so it leads to the RHIA. It would give you specific competencies in informatics that are highly marketable. You may be able to complete it in a few years, since you have a BA and already know much of the material from your current work. It is competency-based rather than locked into semesters, so you can do it basically as fast as you are able. The cost can be very reasonable. WGU is a real university, as well. It s not a diploma mill.
Not the OP, but that was very useful info - Thanks.

The program is with Boston University, not matchbook, but still something that would probably cost a fortune and not lead to much (if anything). Probably best for me to keep limping along with MT until I can collect SS in only 6 more years.
i have a question for working mt's. i have decided that i want to get into the mt field and try to work from home if at all possible, while raising a family. i was going to look into doing an online course and i'm just not sure which "school" would be a good choice. it seems that its so hard to find out which school is actually legit. i know there are some schools that are supported by the adhi and accp. and im not sure if "at home" jobs are actually obtainable to ...
of any good online education for this alone? I see AHIMA has one. I am looking for others. AHIMA's online courses don't suit me. I suppose it would look good on a resume, but I want to LEARN it well. So if anyone has come across a good online course in ICD-10-PCS, please post. Thank you! ...
Here's something that might be useful to you all who have library cards with your own local library. I'm not sure if all libraries are connected to netlibrary.com, but mine is.
Here's the thing:
http://www.netlibrary.com
I went there and signed up by using my local library card. There are a ton of books, in both ebook (pdf) format as well as available for audio download (free). You can search by subject, author, etc., For instance, when I put "start a business ...

I was able to get onto the web site but I don't see anything there that indicates enrollment for this new UnitedHealthcare MS MRA insurance. All of my existing elections are there, but no place can I find anything regarding open enrollment.
Have any of you guys been able to find it? If so, please let me know. I tried calling the "benefits" number on Friday, but I got a recording that there were closed for the holiday...LOL. Not me....I had to work all ...
I just had to vent! I am SICK AND TIRED of companies (mostly hospitals) with these l-o-n-g applications asking you to document your whole life history. These are several pages long, and many times you are restricted to ANSWERS IN BOXES (drop-down menus) so can't enter free text. Finally, there is NO WAY TO SAVE IT! So you can get half or most of the way through and have to stop/pause and/or get stuck because of the dang drop-down stuff, when you can resume you h ...
Hi, I am considering an online MT course to get certified. I have been doing transcription for 6 1/2 years for a mental health agency. I have been doing some online research and there are so many schools/courses to choose from! Which are the best? Accredited? Financial aid or pay as you go? I want to work from home to supplement my income but find that most places you must be certified, have experience, etc.... I have the experience in psychiatry/p ...
I'm just wondering if anyone has taken the new online CMT exam via webcam. Did you have any technical problems or did everything run smoothly? Thanks for the info. BTW, I already know how many of you feel re the CMT exam, so really just an answer to my question would be appreciated. Thanks. ...
Anyone ever test on one the MTTEST online testing sites, knew that you answered all of the questions correct on the multiple choice and fill in the blanks section, only to be told that you failed the test? It would be one thing if you did not know the answers, but when you know the answers because it is general medical transcription knowledge that is dealt with on a day-to-day basis throughout your job, and be told the answers were wrong? Something is wrong with this pictur ...
ICD-10 course rather than be required to stay with them for 2 additional years after the apprenticeship, working whatever shift they feel like sticking you with? I feel like the difference in the amount of money you'd be making in those 2 years with them versus anywhere else would more than pay for an online course. I'm not seeing the draw to this. ...
I have always worked for a hospital in my area and would like to relocate to Florida so was thinking of going with an online service and am looking for some input as to the best services to apply to and the ones to stay away from. I am single and this is my only income and cannot be without a job and good benefits. ...
I need input on which is the best online transcription course available for a newbie. I do have a history of 10 years work in radiology but have been out of the field for about 6 years and now am basically starting over since I am not a CMT.
I have looked @ CanScribe and CareerStep, any opionions on these two?
Thank you for any information you can provide....

I'm seriously considering enrolling at one of the "top two" MT online schools. I'm good at English grammar, spelling, type over 100 wpm with 98% accuracy, a perfectionist, and am also very focused. I do have a full-time job, but can easily devote evenings and time on the weekends to complete the course. I'm up for a challenge, but after doing quite a bit of research, this sounds really difficult. Feedback please! ...
O.K. I'm a "senior" woman...(been 29 for years till my daughter became 30...brat) retraining in MT/Coding/Billing after lay-offs in IT. I'm finding significant gaps in my online training and I'm getting worried because I see all the job postings "must have 3 years, 2+ etc. experience" and wonder if: a) I'll be able to get a job b) have the requisite training due to gaps in coverage at my online school. I've got a million questions. I did great in terminology (98% avg) an ...
I finally got my study material for my administrative assistant course, but according to what I've read so far I may need to learn shorthand. Transcribing my own scrawl is going to be a big step up from transcribing some of the dictators I've listened to, and I gotta say one good thing for my MT career, I don't need to worry about passing the keyboarding section.
Anyone know where I can find a good online course for learning shorthand, that isn't too expensive? T ...
I have found at least 5 dozen on line colleges for medical coding and I can find Pros and Cons for all.
Just wondering if there were any students here currently utilizing on line colleges or programs for medical coding, or if anyone has any experiencing completing one.
Thanks! ...
How does one know which online coding program to take when they all seem pretty good, besides the price difference? I specifically want to know about AHIMA or Career Step from someone who has graduated and found a job. I know they have testimonials on their website, but how does one really know?
I was thinking about either their program or the one from AHIMA, which seems a lot longer, but apparently with either you will be able to sit for the credentialing exam, and they seem to be close in ...
I am considering becoming a MT and have been researching some online MT courses. I am considering Career Step & Med Tech but I bump into another MT online school called Med Workshops **** that offers mentoring internship and will only take your enrollment if they have a job that they can offer you after the course. Sounds too good to be true especially when the course takes anywhere from 6 months to a year. I have been searching around trying to find any kind ...
Hi,
I was wondering if anyone here is going back to school for something else, but taking classes online. I need to find a good online school as we only have one vehicle and my husband is using it to commute back and forth to work in another city. If you are going back to school, what are you going for?
Thanks ...
I have been offered a position with eMTS online and am wondering if anyone has any experience with them. The only posts I have read were good, but they are very old posts. ...
I'm new to this board so bear with me. Having been a MT forever it seems, I'm thinking of making a switch to coding. At one point I was even hired as an entry level coder, learning on the job, but when i position came open in transcription took that as it paid better. In hindsight wish I had stuck with the coding as then could have gone either or even both ways. My problem would be having to actually "go" to a school in person , but i would want something reputable, not som ...

I am trying to apply at Globespan but when I try to download my resume onto the online application I keep getting an error message. You are supposed to download it in Word or pdf format. I thought I was downloading it in Word, but it doesn't seem to work.
Does anyone out there know what would cause this not to work? I really need some help with this since I am really anxious to apply for the opening. Please help if you can. Thank you so much. ...
I've been searching for an online MT school that has a good rep among Mt's and MT employers for been a good school with a good training. So far I have on the list CareerStep, M-Tec, and Andrews.
Please, any opinions and advice about these schools (or any other I don't know about), negative and positive, would be soooo welcome since I'm having a hard time choosing a school. I would not like to waste my money on a school with a poor training and not known ...
