I finally got my study material for my administrative assistant course, but according to what I've read so far I may need to learn shorthand. Transcribing my own scrawl is going to be a big step up from transcribing some of the dictators I've listened to, and I gotta say one good thing for my MT career, I don't need to worry about passing the keyboarding section.

Anyone know where I can find a good online course for learning shorthand, that isn't too expensive? Thanks.

"Universal Class" (universalclass.com) is a very interesting concept. It allows experts in virtually any field to create and conduct online classes at very reasonable prices, and UC takes a small cut from each enrollment to provide the platform. I've taken a couple of their business courses, which were quite good.

Anyway, I see that they have a course in Gregg shorthand for $40, or $50 if you want to take the final test and earn a certificate of completion.

our "Modern Business" course (and I'm not in my 70s). Never used it because, as with most jobs, you needed experience in the secretarial field to get a job in that field, butI wish I still knew it so I could things down write faster.

as a junior in high school. Typing and shorthand were electives that I took. I guess I expected to be a secretary. Boy, did life ever surprise me. I could take shorthand at 90 wpm and decipher it. I still remember it even though I never did get a chance to use it. I also didn't realize it was used by anyone these days. Shorthand went out with the invention of tape recorders. LOL

I took shorthand in H.S. in the 60's. Loved it, was - good at it, but in all my years of working,

and all varieties of office jobs long before becoming an MT, I never, EVER, once got to use it.

The only thing my friends and I ever used it for was passing notes to each other in class that were impossible for most teachers to read if we got caught (except the shorthand teacher).

I'm still one of those that uses shorthand on a daily basis. I'm back to being a full-time paralegal/legal secretary and do MT part-time. I've been using shorthand for over 30 years. I also use it when I'm just taking notes at home or have something that I need to just jot down. My daughter looked at it the other day and said, "Can you read those squiggles?" LOL.

I was able to get onto the web site but I don't see anything there that indicates enrollment for this new UnitedHealthcare MS MRA insurance. I just had to vent! I am SICK AND TIRED of companies (mostly hospitals) with these l-o-n-g applications asking you to document your whole life history. These are several pages long, and many times you are restricted to ANSWERS IN BOXES (drop-down menus) so can't enter free text. Finally, there is NO WAY TO SAVE IT! Anyone ever test on one the MTTEST online testing sites, knew that you answered all of the questions correct on the multiple choice and fill in the blanks section, only to be told that you failed the test? I'm seriously considering enrolling at one of the "top two" MT online schools. I'm good at English grammar, spelling, type over 100 wpm with 98% accuracy, a perfectionist, and am also very focused. I do have a full-time job, but can easily devote evenings and time on the weekends to complete the course.
