Online training BIG gaps... - benchwarmer
Posted: Feb 01, 2010
O.K. I'm a "senior" woman...(been 29 for years till my daughter became 30...brat) retraining in MT/Coding/Billing after lay-offs in IT. I'm finding significant gaps in my online training and I'm getting worried because I see all the job postings "must have 3 years, 2+ etc. experience" and wonder if: a) I'll be able to get a job b) have the requisite training due to gaps in coverage at my online school. I've got a million questions. I did great in terminology (98% avg) and so far MT has been going well except w/regard to formatting. That's where my online training has fallen down...didn't know I needed an AAMT (or AHDI) BOS. It wasn't a course requirement and I just realized its importance via this blog...and the fact that my program instructor 'mentioned' it only after my report submission critique.
Q: So, should I take my meager savings and invest in a BOS?
Q: Are there genuine prospects for newbie MT's and is it all in-house at first as I seem to think?
Thanks!
I think just reading the postings here give you - your answer

From what I read even the most experienced MTs are having trouble finding work and I see newbies complaining because of being turned away due to lack of experience. I think the inhouse would probably be the best place to start, if you can find that.

My mission is to discourage anyone from getting in the MT field, as it will soon be obsolete. We are being replaced with electronic medical records and speech recognition and the rest is going overseas. I'm holding my breath hoping I can keep the job long enough to pay for my college education. I would definitely advise on finding something else. MT is a dying industry.
Ive been MTing for over 10 years to be home for my school-aged children. I am 42 years old and facing the prospect of starting over. Pretty Scary. Good luck with your endeavors!

I would guy the BOS or get an electronic version. I prefer the book but that is just my preference. Congratulations on training to be an MT and don't be too discouraged. I've done this 37 years and had more good experiences than bad. In house is definitely a better way to get up to speed but those jobs are scarce. Hang in there and again...CONGRATULATIONS!

I have never had a BOS and don't ever intend to buy one.
As far as getting a job goes, it is rough coming out of school. I lucked out and got hired on as an IC working at home right out of school, but the company sucked. I stayed long enough to be able to put the experience on my resume and then moved on.
This career is changing, and it isn't for the better.
Good luck to you.
And regarding formatting.... - islander

Formatting is often client specific. The company you end up working for will give you the specifics for the account(s) you work on as to how they want the reports formatted.
A basic idea would be that headings would be in all caps (HISTORY OF PRESENT ILLNESS) followed by a colon and then the text in mixed case (The patient is a 47-year-old white female who...).
But again, the client makes the ultimate decision and any company you work for will tell you how they want the format.

It is imperative to have and to know the BOS. It is also essential that whatever school you go to uses the SUM program. Those are the two most important things. Good luck to you!

Fill In The Gaps Games Jun 12, 2015Well here we go again, fill in the gaps games in our POD. Nope, no way, and if they change my schedule one more time to any later in the day, I'm gone. Done playing their games. Hire more people, stop demanding mandatory OT, and give actual bonuses and this would not be a problem. P.S. Don't expect me to cover other "groupings" gaps. I already work the weekend and late Friday night (still working), only have 1 full day off a week. No threats to "chan ...

Online Library Mar 02, 2010Here's something that might be useful to you all who have library cards with your own local library. I'm not sure if all libraries are connected to netlibrary.com, but mine is.

Online Applications May 14, 2011I just had to vent! I am SICK AND TIRED of companies (mostly hospitals) with these l-o-n-g applications asking you to document your whole life history. These are several pages long, and many times you are restricted to ANSWERS IN BOXES (drop-down menus) so can't enter free text. Finally, there is NO WAY TO SAVE IT! So you can get half or most of the way through and have to stop/pause and/or get stuck because of the dang drop-down stuff, when you can resume you h ...
Choosing An Online MT Course Jun 08, 2011Hi, I am considering an online MT course to get certified. I have been doing transcription for 6 1/2 years for a mental health agency. Wouldn't It Be Better To Take An Online Mar 11, 2014ICD-10 course rather than be required to stay with them for 2 additional years after the apprenticeship, working whatever shift they feel like sticking you with? How Difficult Is An Online MT School? Dec 23, 2009I'm seriously considering enrolling at one of the "top two" MT online schools. I'm good at English grammar, spelling, type over 100 wpm with 98% accuracy, a perfectionist, and am also very focused. I do have a full-time job, but can easily devote evenings and time on the weekends to complete the course. I'm up for a challenge, but after doing quite a bit of research, this sounds really difficult. Feedback please! ...
Anyone Know A Good Shorthand Online Course? Mar 19, 2010I finally got my study material for my administrative assistant course, but according to what I've read so far I may need to learn shorthand. Anyone know where I can find a good online course for learning shorthand, that isn't too expensive? T ...

Which Online Coding Program Aug 17, 2010How does one know which online coding program to take when they all seem pretty good, besides the price difference? Can You Take Online Classes For Coding? Dec 20, 2010I'm new to this board so bear with me. Having been a MT forever it seems, I'm thinking of making a switch to coding. At one point I was even hired as an entry level coder, learning on the job, but when i position came open in transcription took that as it paid better. In hindsight wish I had stuck with the coding as then could have gone either or even both ways. My problem would be having to actually "go" to a school in person , but i would want something reputable, not som ...
