laptop wifi booster - horsewoman

Posted: Mar 02, 2015

I bought myself a laptop recently in order to be able to work away from home every now and then.  I'm interested in anyone who does this and, specifically, I'm looking for a good wifi booster to use in places like RV parks, camp grounds, etc. where the wifi signal might not be strong enough for me to be able to do my job.  I appreciate anyone who might be willing to point me in the right direction.

I would think that most RV parks or campgrounds... - nn

I would think that most RV parks or campground would be offering internet connections like the hotels and motels do now and would provide you with a password to use their connection during your stay.

I work and live fulltime in my RV so here is some advice... - suzieQ559

Don't rely completely on the park's wifi, they are usually too slow for work demands. I travel throughout California for husband's work and I use my cell phone for internet access. It is fast, reliable and I have excellent coverage. I even spent 6 weeks in Texas and had excellent internet access using phone. Also, get yourself a wireless keyboard and mouse, save those hands and wrists! I love the mobility of working out of my RV. Good luck!!

To SuzieQ: What cell phone provider - do you use in your RV?

Also, what kind of plan do you need to cover the demands of the job as far as GB per month?

I started out with 10 GB was fine for work only but I use phone internet access exclusively now as the park WiFi is so slow it makes me crazy. Get the least amount you can for now and see how it goes, if you need more you can always add. The plans can be quite expensive depending on your carrier, so shop around. Good Luck!!!

I use ATT, works well for me in California. It is fast and everywhere...Depending on where you are located, I would shop around for best speed, lowest price and coverage. Well, I guess you probably know that...

What? - Explain please

How do a wireless keyboard and mouse save your hands and wrists?
Ergonomic keyboard.... - suzieQ559

not the laptop keyboard.

Public Wifi is not secure - You may want to

rethink that option depending on the type of work you are doing. If you are an MT it would not be a good idea.

Wifi in motels/hotels, etc - nn

Every time I have stayed in a hotel/motel that has had internet access, I have been provided a password to log onto that facility's internet. It's not like going to the library and working. I have done this for several years in the past when I have traveled and I have never encountered a problem with this.

You may not notice a problem - but

it is still a risk. Everyone has a password for a hotel, coffee shop, etc. You are sharing the wifi with a lot of people you don't know. In just a few easy steps they can look to see what you are doing. If you order something online and use your credit card while using public wifi, someone could very easily access your credit card if they wanted to. I had a BBQ a few years ago and created my own hot spot for my guests, it was only a few hours, I figured what could happen. Two months later I get an email from my wireless service to contact a lawyer representing Disney. Someone illegally downloaded a Disney movie using my wireless! I did get it straightened out, but I'll never do it again.

If you are typing a medical report someone could access that, and if a SSN is on that form anywhere (it is on some of my accounts), someone could access that info. You may not have had any problems, but it could cause a problem for someone else. Below is a link to help keep you safe while using public wifi.
Public WiFi - Yes, it is a problem

Be careful, it's a HIPAA violation unless you are logging in via a VPN connection, those public networks are not secure. If there's a security breach, you are going to be seriously messed up as well has the people who had their info hijacked. Better safe than sorry.
What I use is secure.... - suzieQ559

Have used it for years with no security issues.

Bayscribe - Is There A Volume Booster?
Jul 10, 2011

I always seem to have issues with being able to get the audio up to a comfortable volume on the Bayscribe platform.  I don't think it's an issue with my computer, as my other platforms have volumes that are just fine. Is there a volume booster somewhere on Bayscribe besides the obvious up and down button on the audio player that I'm overlooking?  I have all the settings up to maximum on my computer as well as having the audio player volume all the way up to no avail. Sound Booster Question
Mar 13, 2012

I just bought a Boostaroo sound booster last weekend.  I like that I can plug up to 3 headphones in it (as I use a couple different ones for different types of dictation).  What is troubling me, is the first time I used it, I had my computer control volume settings where I wanted them (sound, wave, etc.) and any adjusting I did in my platform volume control was separate (so any added volume was additional), or at least that is the way it appeared it was working. Yesterday when ...

Okay, I should have checked all this out before I bought a new computer, I know.  But I didn't and now I am paying for it. My company's software is not compatible with Windows 7 and that's what my new computer installed on it.  I have learned that I can take it to a local repair store and have the XP installed on it and the Word 2003, but then I found out from my employer's IT guy that a 64-bit computer is also not compatible.  Geesh!  Anything else I sho ...
