I use my laptop for transcription. I do connect a USB keyboard to make it a bit easier - but by using a laptop you can take your work wherever you go!

correct me if i am wrong, but i believe you do have to plug your laptop in to connect the keyboard/mouse/headset etc. this may seem very elementary to some, but its not when you're new to laptops...

Hi, this whole thing should have gone to the "tech board" however, I will respond. My laptop has 4 USB ports -- footpedal plugs into one, my USB adapater for my keyboard and mouse plug into another USB port. I have a wireless printer so dont have to worry there and you can also buy a USB hub for about $20 which will give you more USB slots and it would only take up one USB port. Laptops are really no different than desktops in that regard

On a plane, even. Obviously, this is for an account where I do not have to work online.... I can run the audio file with hotkeys instead of the foot pedal, and get a couple of hours' worth done while in the air.

I have been using a laptop for about 6 months and I love it. It has a fairly large screen and has XP Professional. It's called a "business laptop" - some of the smaller, cheaper laptops are really just good for e-mail and Internet surfing. It has 4 USB ports. I attach my footpedal, the mouse and a regular keyboard (the laptop keyboard is very difficult to use IMO). I rarely run it on battery. It cost about $1000.
Reasons I like it:
1. Can easily take to another room.
2. Can take it to someone elee's house. For instance, say it is a holiday and you are scheduled to work. There may not be a lot of work but you have to be there to do what comes in. With a desktop I have to stay home. With a laptop I can visit the family, go into another room and work if there is something to do. If not, I can visit with the family.
3 - I can work for more than one company on the same computer because it is mine. Only once I ran into a problem - could not take the job because they required a different VPN they said would not work unless I took off the VPN already on my computer.
hey 7-day, I was told that once about VPNs and believe that a hoax by some companies for whatever re - anon

LAPTOP FOR TRANSCRIPTION??? Mar 10, 2010Hi,
I was wondering if there are any transcriptionists out there that use a laptop for typing? I am thinking of purchasing one of these but also have a desktop. I thought it would be great if I could work in different parts of my house when my kids are sleeping. My desktop is in my master bedroom so therefore its very difficult to work late. I appreciate any help/advice on this issue. Thanks, Jenn ...

Dell Laptop And Transcription Foot Pedal Aug 10, 2011I just bought a new Dell laptop. I had to do a few upgrades to make my transcription program operable. Now that is out of the way and I have run into a problem with my footpedal. It fits, but does not operate, even when I switch the foot pedal settings to USB, COM 1 or COM 2. Does anyone have any suggestions? This is the foot pedal I had been using for my desk top. I am assuming another foot pedal works for the Dell laptop. ...
All-in-one Computer Versus Laptop For Transcription Opinions Jan 07, 2012I am curious which would be best for transcription, all-in-one or laptop with larger monitor. It just seems to me that with an all-in-one you would have less mess on your desk than with a laptop hooked to a larger monitor (I'm ancient so I need a large monitor to be able to see), so I'm leaning towards buying an all-in-one computer rather than the laptop, but have not made my mind up completely yet. Do any of my other transcription buddies have an opinion on one or the ...
New HP Laptop Dec 31, 2009Okay, I should have checked all this out before I bought a new computer, I know. But I didn't and now I am paying for it.
My company's software is not compatible with Windows 7 and that's what my new computer installed on it. I have learned that I can take it to a local repair store and have the XP installed on it and the Word 2003, but then I found out from my employer's IT guy that a 64-bit computer is also not compatible. Geesh! Anything else I sho ...
Laptop Help Jul 28, 2011After being driven out of my house to a motel for 5 days last week due to the heat (94 degrees even with a small a/c, I think the time is here to get a laptop. I discovered the motel does have internet access. It's supposed to be 100 tomorrow.
