Wifi hot spot GB? - Confused

Posted: Oct 25, 2014

I need to know if I can transcribe 5 hours a day with a 5GB wallyworld wifi hot spot thing.  I can't get DSL where I live and my only option is the wifi.  I've been told everything from 3GB to 100GB will be necessary.  Can someone tell me what I need?  Thanks!

WiFi hot spots are not secure and you will be working with patient's personal information. My advice would be not to do it unless you are connecting through a password connected VPN. I would check with your employer in regard to HIPAA rules and use of public WiFi. And people wonder why we have security breaches and identity theft.

That's exactly what I tried to tell ATT and the others I talked to and they kept trying to tell me it has a security code so that nobody can get in. I know better but they'll tell you anything to sell it to you.

If I can get DSL you can... - anon

I'm 30 miles from one town, 20 from the other on 40 acres and I have DSL, SO no EXCUSES!

Talking about wi-fi cell phone connection, it is based on where the cell tower is -- 1.5 miles down the road, forget it -- trees, etc., forget it -- water nearby -- forget it. These all play into connectivity. It is a cell phone connection and BEEN there done there with Clear wireless internet -- it DONT work!

Nother "I wanna work from home, but I dont know NOTHING ABOUT computers and how they work!"

Glad you know everything and your reply was so kind and helpful. The only DSL available here is ATT. According to the CEO himself and the regional managers, there will be no
service upgrades rurally from the nearest town's switching station to any lines or roadside port boxes, etc., so anyone living more than 5 miles in any direction from town is out of luck unless a port opens and I've been added to the list of people waiting. I had DSL before but had to give it up so the process begins again.

One of the things that I did BEFORE moving - nn

I CHECKED to see what my "options" were. Again, I live WAY out in the country and in SW Florida. Before I move ANYWHERE, because my job is "my life," I check to see whether cable internet or DSL is available. Wi-Fi "hot spots" are NOT reliable. They rely on cell towers, so unless you have a cell tower in your backyard from ATT or Sprint, you are basically SOL. I speak from experience where a cell tower is a half mile down the road -- ATT, I have ATT for my cell and VERY spotty coverage. I have neighbors who use T-Mobile, and even though cell tower is down the road, their coverage is NON existent. Sounds to me like you need to move. JMHO

5 miles from town and they would not install DSL - Sad but true

They said no more ports available, whatever that means. I called before we built the house and they said "Yes." We built and I called back to have it installed. They said "No ports available." and would not install. I had to get WildBlue. Looking into selling and moving soon because I have already had to buy extra data twice not three weeks into the first month of their largest package because by the time it actually connects (if it connects), downloads the job (if it wants to), and I send it back (again, if it works), my data has flown out the window.

Laptop Wifi Booster
Mar 02, 2015

I bought myself a laptop recently in order to be able to work away from home every now and then.  I'm interested in anyone who does this and, specifically, I'm looking for a good wifi booster to use in places like RV parks, camp grounds, etc. where the wifi signal might not be strong enough for me to be able to do my job.  I appreciate anyone who might be willing to point me in the right direction. ...

Little errors here and there. The influence of what SR has put out on what should be heard and the constant struggle with how much of the SR ouptut is wrong along with the loss of train of thought from having to stop so many times to correct, delete, move takes its toll. Some of the errors I see, I can barely believe I left. Although, I probably didn't delete enough. SR, in so many ways, is going to be the death of me. :-{ ...

Spot Awards. What Is The Point If They Deduct And Tax
May 15, 2013

In fact, they don't just deduct the $10, but $13 (I think I remember reading the $3 is the "upcost" for mailing, etc.).  What is the point of even giving these if we're funding and paying for them ourselves?   It seems to me a TSMs job of "awarding" us a spot reward for which we are actually paying for ourselves could be better spent on other job duties, maybe like checking and answering their email?  LOL what is wrong with this picture? ...
