Need a new laptop - MT33

Hi,

I am looking for recommendations on a laptop. It will be a gift (not from my husband) but from a relative. I would like one with word processing but I am happy to download open office. I will mainly use the laptop for internet and I would like to get a wireless printer at some time. I know there is a Google type of laptop where nothing is actually stored. Some folks say it is better to get a regular laptop. I wouldn't be opposed to getting a refurbished. Just looking for suggestions and experiences. I also don't know how much the generous reliatve is thinking of spending and so I would like to get something but keep it under $1000 which I think should be doable.

Do NOT go with a Chromebook (Google based). Most companies will require you to have at least Internet Explorer in order to possibly run their programs. Also, most MTSOs use a Word-based platform, so yes, you would need to have Microsoft Office and not Open office which would not be compatible. Also, most MTSOs will require that you have Windows 7. VERY few MTSOs will not accept Windows 8 or 8.1.

I just 2 days ago, got a new Dell laptop for around $700 through QVC and am able to make payments on it. It has 8.1 on it, however, with the software my company uses, it is compatible. You should be able to find a refurbished laptop for possibly around $500 or less. The important thing to keep in mind is the amount of memory and the type of processor. The more memory the better and an Intel processor is much faster than an AMD processor. HTH

I specifically got it on Amazon because I wanted Windows 7, not 8. (First I had gone to Best Buy, tried out all their laptops, made notes, then got it cheaper on Amazon. Also, I couldn't get Windows 7 at Best Buy. It has a 14" screen, a CD player/burner, lots of ports, and lots of memory. I love it! I had one HP, and hated it. I've had 3 Dells, and loved them all. I've been looking at laptops myself lately. Best Buy has some pretty good deals and honestly, some of the new ones are just as inexpensive as some of the refurbished ones. I wouldn't go too cheap like in the $300 range, but you will get what you pay for, but you can find some pretty decent ones in the $500 range there.

We have always been happy with Dell refurbs. I do believe you can get a Dell refurb for under $200. We have never had a problem. They last a long time, and the only time we've had to get another one was one of choice, not it tanking out on us.

I would Google dell refurb and see what you come up with and then review the companies who are selling them.

We used to buy from one in particular (not sure I'm allowed to mention names here), and they had great tech service, too. Helped me get it set up and registered and everything.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I am wondering if you looked for general specifics in terms of memory, speed and other features. I noticed a lot of users are sticking with Windows 7. Is this because of problems with Windows 8 itself or compatibility with programs offered by MT services and failure of MT services to upgrade? Thanks.

The cheapo one I am using is really noisy and hard on my fingers. I have to pound the keys. I would be able to plug my headset, mouse, foot pedal and keyboard all up to it at the same time? Or do they make adapters for USB ports?
