got a really dumb question - JustMe
Posted: Jan 29, 2010Is there any method besides a phone line to connecting to a hospital-based system? an it be done through the Internet?
this is not at all a dumb question, - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
I wondered myself often how this works. Is it that one phones into the hospital system and gets the dictations directly over the telephone?
I think nowadays the majority of hospitals have their transcriptions done digitally or by VR. MTing by telephone is disappearing, isn't it, and how does it really work?
Hospital-based MT - MT who knows

Well, one thing that I have noticed over the years (and I am not an MT anymore) is that a large portion of the MT industry THINKS they are technology savvy when, in fact, they are not - they also THINK they are using the most up-to-date, when they are not. Almost 10 years ago, I used ONE DIGITAL VOICE phone line to connect to the hospital-based system. My digital dictation and the transcription system (what I typed in) came through that one line -- it was (amazingly :-) a web-based, fiberoptic system -- yes, really. :-) Not too long ago, my digital files were downloaded to my PC (Windows XP) and everything was desk-top based. Think about the logical reality of other things that use technology and you will soon realize that the MT industry has preferred to use less-than-optimal setups. I am not sure what the crazy "reasoning" is with that. :-) Glad I'm not involved in that mess anymore.
Connecting to hospital-based system - MT who knows

YES! YES! Are you using the NT server? That is a piece of junk! I KNOW from experience that connections can be made through the Internet! I mean give me a break! Everyone and every organization in the entire world uses the Internet. When I was a transcriber, I only had high-speed/broadband Internet with digital voice (and I don't mean ISDN) -- try getting the hospital office staff to let use you the thing was something else. The in-house staff were so convinced that I DID NOT have that kind of technology where I lived and that "something had to be done to the computer," that they actually tried to hook me up using a phone line (dial-up, ISDN, telnet, whatever) and what a mess that was! My ISP or any ISP that I ever had did not support their crazy connection solutions -- if that is what you want to call them, "solutions." One thing that I did find out is that the office staff had it in their heads that "everyone had to be the same" and so whether the MT had the great service or not the office staff tried to force the antiquated connection technology and say "it's your service." YES, OF COURSE, CONNECTIONS CAN USE THE INTERNET! Give me a break! :-) Glad I'm not involved in that big mess anymore. :-)
I used the hospital systems with telephone lines for - years and no problem at all
[ In Reply To ..]
I had 2 separate lines, 1 for incoming, 1 for outgoing and absolutely no issue, clear dictation, nothing wrong. Would still be doing that way except outsourced and now work on the internet. No mess on this end at all.

written and words used, yes...Duh! Maybe not stupid per se, but certainly ignorant about this profession and perhaps pretending to know more than they do, or maybe an offshore MT with no clue about the english language or its use. In this case, just trying to help teach.
NO, it is not about that! There are certain mTs - all the same
[ In Reply To ..]
who think that being called a "transcriber" or "typist" is below their dignity!
Don't you get it that they are TRANSCRIPTIONISTS, this is something MUCH better (in their minds).
This cracks me up. I do not care what I am called:
Typer, Typist, Transcriber, Transcripionist, medical writer, VR editor, medical language specialist (I like this one), it's all the SAME.
Bottom line: Give me my check.
Transcriber, transcriptionist, etc. - MT who knows
[ In Reply To ..]
GREAT RESPONSE! We all [MTs] know it is true that we need to know and do know a lot to perform this job. We also know that transcriptionists are called transcribers -- and I say with you what is the big deal! :-) I think there are a lot of MTs out there who do think that they are "all that." Bottom line is right -- give me my check -- I agree with that, and we all know what has happened to that over the past several years especially, which is why I will not work for pennies or am in this profession anymore! :-)
Do you know the difference between an optometrist and - an ophthalmologist? LOL
[ In Reply To ..]
One has an M.D. behind their name, considerably more education, and licensed to handle any diagnosing, treatments, medical decision-making, etc.
which 1 has the M.D. behind his...? I wouldn't know... - whaa?
[ In Reply To ..]
only if I looked it up, lol!
Optometrist and ophthalmologist . . . of course I do - MT who knows
[ In Reply To ..]
Do I know the difference . . . of course I do. Again, "no brainer," and "Mr. Obvious." :-) Do you know the difference between ileum, ilium, and peritoneum, perineum, and peroneum? Many people [some MTs included] do not; they do not know anatomy at all. You are not teaching me anything, trust me, I know the difference and then some. :-)
Transcriber, transcriptionist, potato, patatoe...LOL - HatesLosers
[ In Reply To ..]
Yeah, on the face of it, I agree - I don't really care what you call me as long as that check shows up every two weeks!!!
But, in defense of the ones who do, I think it may have to do with (just guessing, of course) with the responses we sometimes get from others when they ask what we do..."Oh, you just work at home?" like it's not a real job. "How boring that must be!" "I couldn't spend all day locked in the house typing," and on and on....know what I mean?
Again, yep, I'm locked in the house all day, and it can be boring, and that IS all I do - but I put food in my boy's belly and clothes on his back, so call me what you will, raise your eyebrows if you want, but keep that check coming!!!
don't throw stones sitting in a glasshouse, read your post! - duh?

Offshore paranoia, although valid. No, I am not an offshore MT, yes I do know the profession, no I am not a "suit," and yes I worked as an MT for almost 20 years. The English language, yes I am well versed with a 3.9 GPA at a major university with writing including technical writing, APA formatting, and English language, etc. as a major strong point. I also have education as an MT and as a medical assistant with anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, etc.; so, I am well aware. I can say this from experience, I think there are a lot of bitter MTs out there (and rightfully so) who just don't want to admit that this profession is dying a slow, painful death.
Do you think that I know more if I call myself a "transcriptionist" - haha
[ In Reply To ..]
rather than a transcriber or typist?
Do you think that people respect you more if you say "I am a transcriptionist" rather than "typist?"
Nowadays there are professions, actually more "titles," one has to ask, "excuse me, but what's that, and what are you exactly doing." Even more so than telling people "I am a medical transcriber."
I prefer to say, "I am a medical writer," or "medical language specialist."
Then they make big eyes and say "Oh, I see!" And in reality they do not see anything and think "that sure is something big!"
But I know the same as "medical typist" or as "medical language specialist."
chuckle, chuckle, duh! I do not mind, I am a "transcriber!" - .

why? See inside........ - ,
[ In Reply To ..]
Why can it not be transcriber?
Why must it be transcriptionist?
It can also be typer, not typist, like
work - worker
drive - driver
farm - farmer
butch - butcher
kill - killer
write - writer
murder - murderer
etc...
type - typer
transcribe - transcriber
must not be ..."ist."
Dictionary states transcriber is "one who transcribes" - deb
[ In Reply To ..]
However, I don't see "typer" in the dictionary.
The machine does NOT transcribe - it merely records - and plays back. A transcriber is -sm
[ In Reply To ..]
the person who hears the spoken word, and transcribes it from verbal to written. ("Scribe" means "write", or "writer"). I think transcriber is a far better name for our position, than transcriptionist, which is an AHDI-word.
Only if the hospital has another way to connect. - kt
[ In Reply To ..]
You and the hospital have to have compatible software, etc., in order to connect where via the internet, phone, etc.
Honesty is the best policy, really - MT who knows
[ In Reply To ..]
Yes, that conclusion is definitely a "no brainer," a "Mr. Obvious" answer. :-) Of course it has to be compatible . . . that's with anything. Let's just hope that in your situation you don't have to listen to BS "reasoning," when, in fact, you may know this and listening to the lying excuses from the office staff only makes things worse. Why? Well, because people are not ignorant . . . this is obvious stuff, and when the truth (the honest truth) is not given for whatever reason (maybe they think to "protect" the MT), well that is an insult. Talk about lack of communication -- that would be a prime example. No real issue can be solved unless the truth is spoken -- how difficult is that. Let's hope that your office staff has enough sense to just say, "Hey, the hospital system is not compatible with your great technology or your wonderful ISP, and because of that, you have to use this old-type connection because we [the hospital] are using the old-type equipment." That's not all that painful, and people will understand "reasoning" completely as opposed to the lame excuses that are obviously lies and not sincere at all.
If their platform is internet based then yes you can - sm - HUH
[ In Reply To ..]
access it through the internet(whatever way you use, dial-up, satellite, wireless, DSL). They will set you up with their program/platform to download, and give you a log-in and password so you can access it. The only other way I have ever done it is with a C-phone and call into their system that way.
They WON'T set you up to their platform - MT who knows
[ In Reply To ..]
Well, good luck with that . . . and they obviously have been treating you well. What I do know is that the MT office staff will push to have EVERYONE setup a certain way and that includes dial-up, even if the MT has high-speed/broadband, i.e. the office staff will connect the MT incorrectly on purpose because they ASSUME that the MT DOES NOT HAVE the appropriate Internet connection. The office staff WILL NOT care and ASSUMES that the MT is ignorant; however, the MT is well educated and knows EXACTLY what is going on. You can use a C-phone with a digital line (and I don't mean ISDN) -- a digital phone line, because I have done it. I used one phone line for the C-phone and to access the network. Remember, everything IS NOT what you assume, and listen to the users because the MT office staff does not know everything that is going on -- even if they supposedly have a PC that "connects" as the user, which is total bullsh_it. :-)
Does not have to be internet based nor use a cphone - Knowing
[ In Reply To ..]
You can get hospital dictation via telephone lines, not internet and not cphone basis. It can be done, I have worked like that before.
Dictation via phone lines - MT who knows
[ In Reply To ..]
Yes, we know. Once again, "no brainer," and "Mr. Obvious." :-) Good for you if you work in an antiquated dual telephone system to get hospital dictation -- but remember, just because you have to, want to, or want to prove a point doesn't mean that is the way it should be done or that it should be forced upon MTs who have availability for better setups.
Quit assuming, am not working in that "antiquated" - system anymore, said it could be done
[ In Reply To ..]
Assumptions usually means you are wrong. Said "used to".
WHO ISN'T INTERNET BASED? :-) - MT who knows

One more comment . . . WHO ISN'T INTERNET BASED? I mean I've been Internet-based for years -- and I don't mean AOL dial-up :-)

So I Did Something Dumb May 30, 2010I took a job with DIT transcription. I know. My thinking was that I could get some experience to take elsewhere because they were the only company that would hire me, and most companies clearly state that you need "on the job experience." Like, any companies that let you take a test to see how well you do or anything like that ...

Maybe I'm Being Dumb Here But... Nov 20, 2014I have seen so many posts on here asking the question of which companies provide computers and I wonder why people don't have their own computer and need one provided.
If it's a matter of "finances," there are many options available to get your own computer; rent to own, or even places like QVC or HSN. They offer payment plans and you can pay with either a credit card or a debit card. I recently got a VERY nice laptop from QVC and am making payments on it in the area ...

How do you charge for CCs if the doc requests one be sent to another doc? Or is this something that is done on their office end?
