Why MTSOs operate the way they do - (sm)

I have worked for a company for almost two years now (MT for 11 years) and am wondering why, all of the sudden, for about a week now I have been getting nothing but dictators that I am not familiar with.  They are part of my pool and I have had dictations from them in the past, but never exclusively.  I have only gotten two dictations in this time period from the dictators for whom I normally transcribe.  I understand wanting everyone on the team to be familiar with all of the dictators in the pool, what I do not understand is why they would switch me from getting any of my usual dictators.  (I guess that means someone else has also been switched also, or has left the position.)  I do not mind getting a mix of dictators, but I am expecting the dreaded e-mail with them wondering why I am not getting my REQUIRED line count (I know, I know . . . if I were working instead of posting this I would be that much closer, but since I know I am not going to make it anyway and that my check is going to reflect that, two things:  One is that I have been demotivated by the very ones who are pushing me to get that line count.  Two, I don't think the time spent here is going to make much of a difference.) 

Anyway, just wondering if anyone can explain why many of these companies operate the way they do.  I am completely baffled.

It's really frustrating the way some of the companies treat their MTs these days.... they don't seem to care about what is best for you, only what is best for them! Don't they realize that happy MTs = good work? When they push off those cruddy dictators on you and take away the good ones, they shouldn't still expect good line counts and good quality. They should divide them out equally among their MTs for coverage and send an email explaining what happened, right? But NO! They push all them off on the humble MTs who do their work without complaining and give YOUR better work to some nagging pet MT...

You could write a pre-emptive E-mail, something like (your post edited): "I have worked for [company] for almost two years now (an MT for 11 years). I gave up on the illusion a long time ago that my bosses care about me. Only one actually does (my team lead), but the rest could care less and constantly override anything she tells me, thus I cannot trust what she tells me is actually true. These companies are awful and treat us bad. It scares me to think where MT is going because the good people will eventually refuse to do it anymore and the others... well they probably aren't up to par to doing this to begin with. That leaves me hoping the doctors and nurses are really paying attention to what they are seeing and knowing whether it is true or not, lest patients become more sick or have too much or not enough meds, etc. Ugh.

I've read on this board enough times over the years about enough companies out there who will "retaliate," even if in a subtle, passive-aggressive manner. It's already bad enough, I don't want to make them angry. YIKES!!!

When will you MTSOs wise up and realize that pages and pages and pages and pages and pages and pages and pages and pages and pages and pages and pages and pages and pages of account specs for nitpicky docs SLOW DOWN YOUR MTs?  If you had any sense, you would use standardized headings in all reports and then turn that into a positive by telling prospective clients that it expedites turnaround of their reports.  That is *exactly* what I did back when I owned my company, and it worked!&n ...

If you want experienced qualified MTs who have been doing this for years and years & can do any WT, any accent, any specialty, adapt to any software quickly.... quit requiring them to include a weekend day.  Save those for part-timers or newbies.  The experienced "oldies" have done their graveyard and weekend time.  There are actually some companies who "get" that.  If you're wondering why you can't find good experienced MTs, maybe that's why... ...

How do you handle using subcontractors (IC's) and still be HIPAA and HITECH compliant?  I guess what I'm getting at is after I did some reading on IRS rules for employee versus IC, it sounds almost impossible to have IC and be HIPAA/HITECH compliant. Is this just a scam so that employers don't have to pay benefits and employer taxes?  I bet if there was an audit, most ICs and MTSOs would be in trouble for using that classification improperly, especially for the full-time positions. MTSOs Being Greedy

Let's get to the point here on why most MTSOs are greedy.  It is not because the MT makes mistakes or should make mistakes.  That is not the issue.  The real issue is that MTSOs don't pay what a quality MT is worth!  That's where the "greedy" comes in.  It also shows that the MTSO obviously doesn't really care about the transcriptionist at all.  If an MTSO pays really low, this says to me they are treating the MTs as robot "worker bees" work ...
