Radiololgy MTSOs - Which will pay the best

I have finally been offered 2 jobs after working for a company that required experienced MTs but only pays 24,000 a year - that's right, I am eligible for poverty-level discounts on my utilities while working fulltime as a seasoned MT, making the highest line count on my account.

So, I wonder how I can ask:  How much money can I expect to make?  I want to make 40 grand a year at least.

Most radiology is now going VR, so you will likly be looking at 4-5 cpl, likely 8-9 straight transcription.

How fast you are is not apparent in your information.

You need to make $19-20 an hour and work 40 hours a week for 52 weeks (unless you get PTO) to make $40k.

At 4 cpl, you will need to produce 475 lines an hour for 8 hours a day 5 days a week.

If you're getting 8 cpl to straight type, you'd need 237-250 lines per hour for 8 hours for 5 days a week.

You need to find a company that will pay by the report. I currently make $1.25 for regular transcription and $.85 for Powerscribe editing. I prefer Powerscribe as I can do 30 reports an hour.

Make sure that the company has a lot of radiology work. Make sure that they pay links.

What do you mean by pay links? - wish I worked where you do

Unfamiliar with the term pay for links, what links - like a radnet platform?
Links mean that if is a CT of the chest, abdomen and pelvis, you get paid for 3 reports. sm - RadMT

I have worked for Keystrokes for the past 5 years and am very happy. They have a lot of radiology accounts, and I have always been as busy as I want to be and need to be. VR has slowed a few accounts down, but I am on a very busy one where the radiologists use editors. I love my job.

Bring on the flames, every time one of us says something good about Keystrokes, the wicked come out to play.

One MT makes 55 grand and nother 25? My supervisor told me she only makes 30 grand a year and she has been there 5 years. What is up with THAT? No wonder there are some MTs who are miserable and others who couldn't be more delighted at KS. For them to allow this huge difference in pay and then not do anything is the reason there is bad press, OBVIOUSLY. I have also been there 6 months and STILL do not have health insurance though I was eligible 3 months ago. Once my Comcast was disconnecte for no pay and I was written up. I am going broke here, I mean I am going into foreclosure and if I lose my house, it is all over in my world, all over. I have no place to go, no family, and now, no savings.

I have already talked to head people. They seem so confused about how I could be making so little money yet when I asked for OT compesnation you'd have thought I asked them for an all inclusive 5 day vacation at the Atlantis. Now, I cannot work OT anymore unless I am specifically asked by my supervisor (well, that was the only time I worked OT anyway).

It is just crazy. Maybe they want me to quit. But, as I said, I have 2 job offers. Before going into a job, I wondered how one asks: How much money can I expect to make from this account? All the MTs on my account are making very little. One MT with a child has been working for KS for over a year and has not been given health insurance. It is like some MTs are given the red carpet and the others are treated with disdain. And this is nothing new from the sounds of posts going back to 2008 in the archives.

Maybe its all a matter of who you know and supes playing favorites; or maybe they discriminate based on things like attendance, QA review, productivity, etc.

All I know is I put in an application there in November and it was totally ignored.

If you have been eligible for 3 months for insurance, you would have it. They are very on top of that.

There is no supervisor making under $30,000 a year at KS in radiology or any department.

This sounds fishy. I am not the original poster, and I definitely make over $50,000 per year. I work on a good Radnet account, work 8 hours a day and enjoy both what I do and the company I work for.

This sounds strange. If you truly make $25,000 a year, you need to call HR and let them know that you need a different account.

I tend to be top producer. I type fast but also have mastered my word expander and pay close attention to detail so my reports tend to be very accurate. I have always been an MT that physicians love as I follow the report closely and note discrepancies and am not obtrusive. My teammates loved me because I come in and help when we are swamped and share the load when there are few jobs. I also work holidays because I have no family and really do not mind.

There are NO MTSOs (middlemen) that pay well. - (I get poverty rates on my utilities, too.) sm

Now if only we could get a special poverty rate on our rent, our food, our gasoline, our car payments, and clothing. THEN, it almost might be worth it to work for one of these slave-drivers/pimps.

And that's all they are: SLAVE-DRIVERS AND PIMPS.

I've got more than 30 years invested in being an MT, and I made $22,000 this year.

THINGS I WOULD LIKE TO SEE FAIL, AND GO DOWN IN FLAMES IN 2010:

1 - The Stock Market. It's ruined the US economy, and just about everyone else's, too.

2 - The Banks. Right up there with the Stock Market in their dishonesty and ruthlessness.

3 - The Health Insurance Industry. May all those stuffed shirts die slowly of lung cancer. With no pain meds.

4 - The MTSO industry. We and the hospitals/clinics/doctors' offices we worked for in the past got along JUST FINE before outsourcing (out of the office) was born, and the first MTSO middleman reared his ugly head. It's been all downhill from there. If mine imploded and went bankrupt tomorrow, at least I'd be standing in the unemployment line with a big ol' GRIN on my face.

If you want experienced qualified MTs who have been doing this for years and years & can do any WT, any accent, any specialty, adapt to any software quickly.... quit requiring them to include a weekend day.  Save those for part-timers or newbies.  The experienced "oldies" have done their graveyard and weekend time.  There are actually some companies who "get" that.  If you're wondering why you can't find good experienced MTs, maybe that's why... ...

How do you handle using subcontractors (IC's) and still be HIPAA and HITECH compliant?  I guess what I'm getting at is after I did some reading on IRS rules for employee versus IC, it sounds almost impossible to have IC and be HIPAA/HITECH compliant. Is this just a scam so that employers don't have to pay benefits and employer taxes?  I bet if there was an audit, most ICs and MTSOs would be in trouble for using that classification improperly, especially for the full-time positions. MTSOs Being Greedy

Let's get to the point here on why most MTSOs are greedy.  It is not because the MT makes mistakes or should make mistakes.  That is not the issue.  The real issue is that MTSOs don't pay what a quality MT is worth!  That's where the "greedy" comes in.  It also shows that the MTSO obviously doesn't really care about the transcriptionist at all.  If an MTSO pays really low, this says to me they are treating the MTs as robot "worker bees" work ...
