How many characters is your line?
if your line is 65 - hmmm

Divide 1200 by 8 hours and you get 150 lines per hour. Multiple 150 lines with 10 words per line and you get 1500 words per hour. Divide 1500 words with 60 minutes and you get 25 words per minute.
I think I suck at math because that does not seem right at all, yet somehow from a mechanical point of view it feels right.
That is right. Which is why how fast you type - sm

has much less to do with your productivity as an MT than how much you know without stopping to look it up and how speedily and efficiently you can find what you do need to look up.

even the people who average 300 lph are only doing 50 wpm. My transcription wpm are very nearly the same as my straight typing on a typing test for job employment...only 60 some-odd wpm. Fast typing speed alone does not a good MT make.
1200 lines/8 hours equal 160 lines/hour, which ... - starzzz

using a 65-character line would be 2080 words per hour. (a word = 5 characters, so a 65-character line would equal 13 words per line x 160 lines per hour = 2080 words).
That said, I can't believe places still use anything but the 65-character line (WITH SPACES). Any other job has a cut-and-dried compensation rate (per hour, per piece, etc., you never see "Hiring piece workers at $1.20 per 1/13 of a piece.") Meh, I digress!

Transportal And 1200 Lines A Day Sep 29, 2011I may be seeking a new position, and in general, due to possible better flexibility, I prefer to work as an IC. I read that transportal does hire ICs, but I also read that they require 1200 lines per day, and you have 3 months to get to that minimum. I must confess that, on the account I have worked for years, it is a struggle to make 1,000 lines per day. Maybe it is the platform. Maybe it is the fact that the account is always making changes or has a ton of "exceptions" to the 20-page guideline ...

QA Pay Other Than By Lines Or By Hour Dec 08, 2010Hi!
Just wanted to know... I have been told by others who are QA/editors that you dont always get paid by the line or by hour... some places pay them differently. I dont understand how else you can get paid, that doesnt make any sense to me. Anyone know anything about this? I want to be an editor eventually but would like to at least make more than what I did when I transcribe. thoughts?

QA Lines Per Hour/day Nov 17, 2011I have been promoted to QA and was wondering what the average line count you that do QA get in an hour or a day. I have been doing this for a few months and I am making about the same amount of money per month as I was with MT. Am I being too slow? I am afraid to speed it up for fear of missing something. My workload is about 50% fill in blanks and scan and 50% listen and read along full audit stuff. Right now I am averaging 400 to 450 lines an hour or 3200 to 3600 a day. I was hoping to make a ...
VR/ASR Lines Per Hour Jan 04, 2012My accounts were recently switched from typing to mostly ASR...I'm really struggling here! It seems like I take longer to edit jobs than to type them out. To Get Decent Lines An Hour Aug 04, 2010Hi, I seem to struggle with line counts (a few years into MTing). Some accounts I am fine with and some very slow. Because of the nature of the work (and working from home), I have no way to gauge if the faster accounts are just abnormally easy or the slower accounts are abnormally hard. - Do you all (who have decent line counts) feel like you are moving like a mad person or just moving along at a decent pace?

HOW MANY ASR LINES CAN YOU EDIT PER HOUR? Jan 28, 2012I'm sure this question has been asked before, but how many lines on average would you say you can edit with ASR per hour? I think the most I have ever been able to do was around 250 myself. I just wondered how I measured up with other MTs with the ASR jobs.
