This is nothing new, but I really think everyone who has the time should create a comment exposing the lies, keep a copy of it and re-post on all these YouTube videos that are falsely advertising the great future of MT!

ATTENTION THOSE CONSIDERING MT/EDITING TRAINING:

I have been a medical transcriptionist for 27 years. Never have I heard so many blatant lies about our current job situation!

TRUE FACTS:
MTSOs are paying .03 to .04 cents per line today. That is ONE FOURTH the going line rate of the 1980s! They claim that we should be able to edit twice as many lines per hour as we transcribe - BULL. What these MTSOs do not tell you is that the VR drafts are of such low quality that it takes almost as long to edit. On the average it takes 75% as long as it takes to transcribe. You are required to do the following:
FREE LABOR: Correct doctor errors who consistently give the wrong demographic info. This requires searching medical records from the few clues provided to make sure you are putting the documentation to the right chart. You then need to reformat the entire document for the proper headings, numbering system, and format. When a dictator mispronounces, for example, a medication or dosage (which occurs on at least 50% of the dictations) you have to first research online to see if there is a new drug with that pronunciation. After ruling that out, you have to research the patient's previous medical records to find a report that lists the medications to confirm your suspicious that it was simply a mispronunciation. We experienced MTs rarely leave blanks unless they are dictator error. We then have to go through the process of sending it to QA, who also cannot decipher the word(s). Then we have to email the supervisor to advise that a stat report went to QA so s/he can make sure it gets back to the client quickly. Over 90% of the time dictators want copies to be sent to other physicians and will blurt out only a last name, i.e. "Dr. Smith in Miami". This requires you knowing the patient's current conditions and history, researching online to find a "Dr. Smith" in Miami and if you are lucky there will only within that specialty to help narrow it down. If you canâ��t be sure exactly which â��Dr. Smithâ�� to send the copy to, you have to research the patients medical records trying to find a report that mentions the "Smith" providerâ��s first name and title (FNP, MD, PA, etc). If you send a copy of the patient private medical record to the wrong provider, you have committed a violation of HIPAA with stiff penalties. All this (which can be 50% of the time worked) is UNPAID LABOR as they only pay for the lines edited â�� not research. As an editor you often do not even make minimum wage. They can legally get away with this calling you an independent contractor, yet breaking the IRS rules for this by demanding you work a specific schedule. When I had my own clients I last made .14 CENTS PER LINE and this was in the 1990s - TWENTY YEARS AGO! This brought in about 35 to 40K per year so please, do the math. You will make less than 10K per year full time. This is what we made before the MTSOs (middlemen) took over jobs, bidding much less than we made as independent contractors 30 years ago and paying us a fraction of the line rate they charge the clients!

JOB SITUATION: Last year there were approximately 800 applicants for every MT/ME job. The beginning of this year most of us were out of work, so I estimate that the number of applicants has risen about 30%. Most are getting out of the MT business all together. Take a look at the job boards and check the number of applicants for each position advertised. Google search "MT forums" and check their jobs listed. Most of us have lost our jobs because the MTSOs have fraudulently claimed that we can edit twice as much per hour as we can transcribe. Ask any editor if this is true. It is an outright lie. You can proofread a document that you don't have to research demographics, doctor names, patient names, medications, etc., etc., free of charge, a document that has perfect formatting and is spoken clearly. It is not the editor's job to simply proofread. If it were, we would be making decent money.

EXPERIENCE: You cannot become a qualified MT by simply going to school. It takes years of experience. There is one company that hires recent graduates, but that is for .03 cents per line editing, and they require the experienced MTs to train them (another thing we are required to do for free). It is not cost-effective for a company to hire a new graduate because they have to pay more than they are collecting from the client as a QA editor needs to go over 100% of the work. It just isnâ��t profitable.

SHORTAGE OF MTs: BULL! One woman on this video fraudulently claimed that due to the economy MTs could not afford to retire before, but with improved economy they can and so it has left the business with a shortage of MTs. I had to laugh at this blatant lie. MTs who are 100% self supporting are losing their homes, going homeless, going on food stamps or getting groceries from food banks. Some live in their cars. They can only put a few dollars of gas in their cars at a time, cannot afford medical insurance and live with untreated illnesses.

Please, before giving thousands of dollars to these con artists who run MT schools, consult real MTs on forums. You will NOT go into this dying profession!

Make sure your headings are spelled correctly before uploading as the spell checker ignores them completely, which makes me highly suspicious that they are not included in our line count whether we type them or insert them. Beware . . . Watch out for this company!!! They do nothing but move employees around continously and train them on new accounts so there isn't any room for advancement or the ability to excel on a specific account. Lastly, they have US MTs get all the 'bugs' out on an account and then move the account off shore and lay off their US MTs. Just recently our QC sent out an email to an MT in our group for a HIPAA error and blind copied all the MT/MME in the BOB. This poor MT would never have known unless others came forward and reported that they got this email in error. Make sure that if you get an email it is only coming to you. I really hope she files a complaint with HR for shaming her in front of her peers. Don't look, don't share apparently does not apply to anyone other than MT/MME. ...

Nuance believes (wrongly) that fairness does not matter, that they can unilaterally define every aspect of our work and compensation, with no input from us, their MTs. It got my shifts wrong for different days, putting 5 instead of 6 hours. It evened out mostly to be correct but put an extra hour of PTO on my schedule.
