Supervisor hardly ever sends patient lists - iamnew

Posted: Jan 31, 2012

My supervisor assigns me work, but 5 times out of 10, she never sends me the patient list, which I can't start without. I call or e-mail her, but sometimes she's not available when I call, and sometimes she doesn't answer my e-mail until 3, 4, 5, or more hours later. This wastes my time and does not allow me to work the times I need to. Any suggestions about what to do?

Not sure what you're using for your reports - sm

but if you are using Word or something, couldn't you type the reports and go back and put the patient information in later?

My pet peeve too - JW

This is a huge pet peeve for me too. It wastes our time and time is money to us. I guess that part of a patient's record isn't that important anymore.

what I would do - sm

I would transcribe the note, leaving the name in question either in bold or underlined - or blank, even. Let her know that you will go back into the saved note and correct the name as soon as she provides the necessary information.

This way you are 1) not delayed, 2) you will be paid for the time it takes to go back and correct the note, and 3) she might get the message that it's more expedient for her to be prepared in the future.

Lost our account because of this. - MT

The situation was different, but basically while working for a disorganized national company, the client was e-mailing patient lists to the office, and those lists were supposed to be forwarded to us. We MTs were NOT getting those lists so had to IM the client staff to ask them. The client got REALLY upset after it had happened 5 or 6 times, and ultimately we lost that account because of it.

Good luck!

Sounds like a place I used to work at - sm

The secretary/supervisor never sent the lists or sent the wrong one. They refused to admit they made mistakes, they were unavailable for contact, they were late in replying.

What I would do is this: Flatly state you need the list by X time. Can they get it to you by then? If they say no, you'll either have to modify your work schedule or quit.

If they say yes, hold them to it. If they aren't sending the lists and you can't get a phone/email response, flatly tell them you NEED to be able to get hold of them when they forget the list.

I'm going to be honest with you: They probably won't comply. Sounds like you're working for one of the dozens of low-rent mismanaged small MT businesses out there, and it will not end well. But you have to stand up for yourself and demand what you need to at least see if they can provide it.

Unofficial Poll - Escription Numbered Lists
Apr 24, 2014

I am just curious. About what percentage of lists that appear in your reports numbered, as in past medical history or medications, comes out correctly? I am guessing that with medications specifically, which I think it does a horrid job at, about 2 or 3 times a day out of about 20 reports, the list will come out correctly. The majority however is completely messed up, double numbers, wrong medications, etc. I can't believe what a piece of work voice wRECk is?! When I see the advert ...
