Smartype - reviews on it ? - slowmt

Considering buying Smartype. Looking for reviews on it. Thanks!

Personally, I use - sm

I've tried most expanders out there, including Smartype, and prefer PhraseExpander over any of them. There is no learning curve and you can readily integrate your present expanders into it easily. Their customer service is awesome and Andrea answers you in a timely fashion and LOVES feedback and has actually used some of my suggestions.

It looks interesting. - (sm)

I just downloaded the free trial. I have problems with Shorthand, it seems to kind of "stutter" for me, when expanding longer phrases especially. I just can't stand to watch it while I work do its back up and then go forward thing, and I've played with the timing. Anyway, playing with this will let me rule out if it's something with my computer or not. Do you know if you can import Autocorrect entries into it?

I believe there is a - sm

glossary here for autocorrect. I keep my Word autocorrect on at the same time. Don̢۪t forget to download the "age" glossary here:

If you have any problems, you can write to Andrea, who is the creator of PE and ask him specific questions. I'll be more than happy to help you out as much as I can!
Thanks! Another question... - (sm)

Do you use the Standard or the Professional version, and if the latter, do you feel the extra features are that helpful or necessary for MT work? This is for someone (me) who uses exclusively Autocorrect now and is totally fine with the way that works, just worried about overburdening its purported limited capabilities in terms of number of entries allowed before it crashes.
I have over 10,000 - sm

entries in my AC and back them up routinely and have never lost any or had crashes (there's a program that does this for you and I can find it if you'd like).

I use the professional version and I believe there is a free trial for that also. He just had a sale for the professional version for around $30 and might have another one when he comes out with his exclusive MT version. Maybe you can write to him and ask if there is a sale coming up for the new year? The thing I love about the expander is that you can have more than 1 entry per short.

If you send me an e-mail, I'll be more than happy to give you the pros and cons!
Done, e-mail sent. Let me know here if you don't get it after a while. - (sm)

Actually, I sent that e-mail with the addy just in the box, but don't know if that shows up for you. Resending now with addy in the body.

I have over 30,000 entries in my autocorrect, I add entries every day, and I have had no problems with it crashing, ever.

That being said, I tried SmartType in my WP5.1 days and I liked it very much.
Great, thanks. I've heard of others in the past having problems... - (sm)

but I'm up to just over 20,000 entries now and so far so good. I am going to start backing up more frequently just to be on the safe side, though.

Surprised to not have heard from any Shorthand users yet. I thought that was one of the most popular expanders besides Instant Text. Like I said, I've tried it, but for some reason I just can't get it to expand as smoothly as my Autocorrect does. It does have some cool macro features, though.
Since Autocorrect does not run macros - TiredOldMT
[ In Reply To ..]
Actually, a few years ago I did write a macro as a workaround to invoke macros in your template, since autocorrect does not run macros as some of the better and more expensive expanders can do. I am not going to post it here because it will just get moved to the tech board. It is not a perfect solution but I think it is useful. Basically you type in the name of the macro on your document and then press the tilde key (the key in the upper left hand corner next to the 1 key, actually it is the single apostrophe because you don't press the caps lock.) The reason I chose that key is because I hardly ever use it. So if you are interested in taking a look at it I will post the macro on the tech board (actually there are 2 macros.)
Yes, please do. Since somebody posted one of the best macros I've ever used... - (sm)

(renumbering lists, see link) that got moved to the Tech Board, I regularly check there now anyway.

edit: Ah, I see you did post it. Thanks.

if you're interested and these don̢۪t work out for you! I also have the Saving Keystrokes book which is fabulous in helping devise your own system. Make an offer!

Just an FYI: Instant Text won't work with EditScript. - (sm)

[ In Reply To ..]
If I had it to do over again, I think I wish I'd started out with Instant Text, but I got too set in my ways with Autocorrect-type of expanders to comfortably transition to IT when I tried it out. Which may be for the best in my case, since apparently it doesn't seem to work well with EditScript, for one.

The new version of IT doesn't work with - bleck

[ In Reply To ..]
Word 2003 either. :(
FYI for archive purposes: I read that the reason IT doesn't work with Editscript... - (sm)
[ In Reply To ..]
is because the clipboard feature is turned off in EditScript, which it indeed is. It was suggested to get your administrator to re-enable that feature for you (which is apparently an Emon option) to be able to use Instant Text with EditScript. The clipboard is turned off for us supposedly as a HIPAA safeguard so we can't copy & paste (which is so goofy; there are ways to copy from other sources in the program or just through Search Dictations, so why hamper us like that when we've signed a confidentiality agreement?) I'm sure there's no way in heck anyone would turn on my clipboard for me if I requested, nor likely would anybody else be able to get that done either. So IT is out for EditScript.
EditScript - nl
[ In Reply To ..]
I used it every day with EditScript. I would talk IT to see if they can help you resolve your issues. It works great.

It works for me - more or less

[ In Reply To ..]
I have to start IT during the sign-in process, right after it verifies my sign-in and before the "OK" message. That eliminates the problem with moving through the dictation. Alt + Shift + = moves into the clipboard, but I have to retype the entry. But the backspace key doesn't allow a "redo" so a typo means hitting the esc key and trying again.

I tried it, and tried several others over the years. Felt this was most comprehensive. They have a free 30-day trial, and the tech support is amazing. Can use on multiple computers as long as you are the only one typing. I am re-entering after many years out of the business, and made my purchase last weekend.

Escription Reviews?
Feb 09, 2011

My company is switching to escription in a few months.  We've heard the spiel from Escription.  Now I would like to hear from transcriptionists who use it.  What is the actual productivity improvement?  Any gliches with the software?  Do you like editing versus transcription?  Do you earn more or less now?  When your companies switched over to escription did the productivity improved as they said it would and how much reduction in staff occurred?  We've been told people can edi ...

AMPHION - Not What It's Cracked Up To Be From Reviews Here
Mar 10, 2010

Just wanted to give a heads up to anybody considering this company.  Even though they don't offshore, they are one of the worst bait-and-switcher MTSOs I've encountered. I was promised a non-overflow account by the talent acquisitions staff and then, once I actually started training, was moved to another account that at least had the work types I wanted.  But that was only overflow, so I got put on a secondary with specs so ridiculously different from my primary that I would ...

SmarType Help, Please
Mar 08, 2013

I am just staring with SmarType and am having an issue whenever I use the word "he."  SmarType kept replacing "he" with "her," so I deleted "her" from the auto-option.  I thought that would fix the issue, but now it's replacing "he" with "heart," which is now the first auto-option word beginning with "h-e."   It's getting monotonous and time-consuming having to go back and correct this, as you can imagine. Has anyone else encountered this with SmarType and how did you ...

I really hate to add to the conspiracy theories (as I generally just don't believe them), but I can't help but add to this one! I can definitely tell that the quarter is almost up because I've started receiving more and more post-audit reviews, and of course they are just enough to knock my out of the running for bonus, despite having a near 100% score of QC1 and post-audits earlier in the month.  Any post-audit QA's out there want to comment on this?  It's a ...

Smartype Editscript

I downloaded the new version of Smartype, and I need to figure out how you get something not to expand like say if you type pm and it expands it but you don't want it to.  The older version you could type the word and press the shift key while pressing the spacebar and it would not expand, but it does not work that way on this version.  I have no idea how to change the hotkey from the spacebar either.  I have looked through the help pages and can't find it.  ...

Word 2003/Smartype
Jan 04, 2010

Does anyone know if there is a fix for Word 2003 to correct the compatibility issue with Smartype?  If I highlight a word and then type without deleting the text, Word will lock up.  Sometimes if I type over highlighted text without pressing delete,  I get three duplicate letters in a row, and then the cursor scrolls to the bottom of the screen and Word crashes.  It is a real pain to have to hit delete all the time, and if anyone knows of a way to fix this, I'd appr ...
