Since the old Smartype does not support Windows 7 or 8, only XP, I bought the new (not Stedman's anymore) Smartype. It is not very good at all. I contacted Speedtype, which looked really great, similiar to the old Smartype (I can macro large blocks of text for OP reports) and spoke with the CEO!!! REALLY?? She was fabulous and told me there was a shortcut to get your old blocks of text into Speedtype without cutting and pasting. I have not tried the 15 day trial period yet, but was wondering if anyone has any experience with Speedtype. It is pricey, but MANDATORY for me. Looks like really good customer service too.
But Speedtype has a reputation for better customer service, which your post again confirms. It's a $50 difference in price between the two (unless I'm missing something), but you might consider it worth that extra amount of money for Speedtype to assure the kind of support you've already received from them. Or try a trial of each and see if there are any practical differences too.
You can try IT for 30 days at link below. Converting your Smartype list, words and blocks, takes a few clicks with the Instant Text Importer.
If someone is thinking of buying Speedtype, then they might want to know about a similar program that is $50 less (i.e., Shorthand).
I supplied the links to the actual programs.
