Pay by audio minute versus per line. - wondering

Posted: Apr 13, 2013

Good morning.  I am wondering if I should take a job that pays per audio minute or would I make more money doing cpl?  The audio job pays .70 cents per audio minute and the cpl pays .07 cpl.  The audio job will be very part time and I am not sure about the cpl gig.  Thanks so much for your input.

depends on the audio quality - OHMT

A report generally takes 2 to 3 times the length of the audio to transcribe. For example, a 10-minute audio will take you 20 to 30 minutes to transcribe. So, if it takes 30 minutes, then you will make $7.00 for typing that report. That works out to $14.00 per hour. If you have easy dictators and can set up templates, then you can go faster.

To make the same amount in the per-line rate job, you would need to type 200 lines per hour.

What it really comes down to in either scenario is the quality of the audio. I'm actually working for 5 cents per line (something I thought I'd NEVER do), but I have templates for everything. I had over 32,000 lines on my last pay (bi-monthly). I'm actually making more there than my other job that pays 8.5 cpl.

Good luck in whatever you decide to do!

You need to figure out how many lines you type per hour and how long it takes you to type 1 minute of audio. This is just a general breakdown.

1 hour audio at .70 = $42
4 hours to type(some may take longer, some less)

4 hours at 150 lph = 600 lines x 0.07 = $42

Thanks for the info. - OP

I still don't know what I will do. It depends on what shifts the jobs will be as well. I know the audio job will be early first shift. Not sure about the cpl. I just got contacted to test for the cpl job.

CPL vs pay by minute - Bilboa

I think the usual rule of thumb is about 11 lines per audio minute. If that rule holds true, then the pay-per-minute job would work out to less than 6.5 cents per line.

HOWEVER, there are a ton of other variables. To start with, how are the lines being counted? 65 characters, or something else? Are spaces, headings, and demographics counted? The answers to those questions may make the 11 lines/audio minute rule of thumb completely wrong!

Also, the quality of the dictation and quality of the audio are huge factors. If you are able to, you would probably do best to take both jobs and work them both for a while. Then if you actually have enough work on both to keep you busy, you can quit the one that pays less. Or the one that you find the greater headache for other reasons, for that matter.

Can Someone Tell Me About Pay By Audio Minute/page?
Sep 28, 2013

I am getting ready to test for this company (not medical) for a transcription job. They advised me that their starting pay (depending on account) is 0.40 per audio minute up to $1.25 per audio minute and then they have some accounts that pay 0.65 per page up to $1.75 per page. Does anyone know if I could make decent money doing this full-time? I know it depends on speed and quality of audio (which is supposed to be good) but I am just wondering how things go based on this type of pay option. ...

Pay Per Audio Talking Minute
Jan 16, 2015

Note, these are non-MT jobs. I have been applying to jobs that pay per "audio talking minute." These are all basically customer service jobs which might include a little tech help and also might include some upselling. Anyone have a take on this? After I quit MT, I SWORE I would never do any job that was not hourly or otherwise a guaranteed amount per paycheck. Has anyone done this type of work? I guess I'm curious what "audio talking minute" means. I'm assuming it means not ...

Fox Transcriptions Pay Of 40-50 Cents Per Audio Minute
Feb 06, 2013

Even at 50 cents an audio minute, if you get a 10-minute report that would equate to $5.00. Usually it takes 30 minutes to do a 10-minute report so that would mean one would receive $10.00 an hour. If only getting 40 cents, that's $8.00 an hour. PFFT! I don't see how this is any improvement over our standard slave wages, yet their ad sounds like they invented the wheel or sliced bread. With a name like "Fox," it's got to be bad. (Apologies to Smucker's.) ...

Job Pays 30 Cents Per Audio Minute, Geez
Jan 18, 2013

So there is job posted that pays 30 cents an audio minute.  How generous!  You figure depending on the dictator and difficulty of transcript 60 minutes of audio is equal to 3 hours of transcribing.  Granted, most of the time it does not take that long, but just in case for good measure we'll say 3 hours for 60 audio minutes.  Do the math!  30 cents a minute x 60 (1 hr)= 1800.  So another words, if you divide 1800 by 3 you get your hourly rate = 6 buck ...

Experienced MTs; Paid By The Line Or By The Audio Hour?
Jun 11, 2013

I've been an MT for over 5 years and have always been paid by the line. I would think that most MTs preferred wage is to be paid a set amount per hour.  If this were not an option, what has given you more of an income, paid by the line or by the AUDIO hour?  What I'm currently being offered per audio hour comes out to less than what I was paid per line at my previous job, but the reports are easier to understand so it may be worth it.  It is basically both ...

Pay By Line Versus Hourly Rate
Sep 16, 2010

Hi all. I'm a newbie to these boards. I've been reading all the posts here about the VR programs.  More production + more hours = less pay.
