What does $1 per audio minute amount to? SM - Totally in the dark

Posted: Jul 12, 2013

I've never been paid per audio minute.  What would 1 dollar per audio minute come to if I can type 300 lines per hour?  Does anyone have an equation I can plug the numbers in to or any idea what a ballpark figure would be for this?  Thanks.

For instance OP - SM

It took me just under 4 minutes to type a 2-minute report just now. Can I assume that on a very good day it would take me 120 minutes to type 60 minutes worth of audio and therefore I would be paid 60 dollars for that hour?

No, $30/hr. The range for someone experienced is...sm - oldtimer

2-3 minutes per audio minute depending on the dictator and the type of dictation.

I think the math is off here.... - just saying

It is more like 3+ minutes to do every 1 minute of audio. 60 (minutes in an hour) divided by 3 is 20.

I'd be very surprised if you could make $20 or more per hour, but that's what it's closer to.

You can't think lines per hour at all here. Its how many minutes of audio can you do per hour - and keep in mind that includes your proofing.
That almost seems to good to be true. - I remember I use to

could straight type a 15 minute report in like a half-hour and have done 30 minute reports in just under an hour. So that would mean that yes, you definitely could make like $30 an hour, but whats the gimmick? I don't know of any MT jobs out there in this day in age where it is still possible to make that kind of money unless you are still one of the very few to still be working in the hospital setting with a good hourly rate and a fairly decent incentive plan.
i make a lot more than that and it is not in the hospital setting - mtr

it is very possible to make that and more depending on how much shorthand you are willing to produce and use.

Please be kind enough to share how and who with!!!!!

of course you cannot assume that there are many variables - mtr

my audio equation - Freebie

I don't know if this will help but I've noticed that I get about 100 lines per minute of audio. That would be $1/100 lines or 10 cents a line which would be pretty good.

Platforms - oldie

[ In Reply To ..]
I think it depends on the platforms too - you have to allow for 5 minutes at minimum an hour to get the patient demographics The pay is awesome once you get used to it...

on the other hand - Freebie

[ In Reply To ..]
I just did a 21 minute report that was actually only 79 lines so for that you would get paid $21 but at 10 cents a line it was only $7.90 - so that would be a bit plus.

Be REALLY careful with some of these replies - just saying

Because I HAVE worked on the audio minute before.

If you have a fast/difficult speaker dictating a report that is 5 minutes long it will take you at least 15 minutes to type and more like 20-25. You get $5 no matter how long it takes you or how many lines there are in the report. Period.

Take the same 5 minute report with a good dictator at normal speed and WITH formatting and proofing, etc., you can do it in 12 minutes. You have now made $10 with about 26 minutes remaining in the hour. The next two reports could either be a fast ones and you would make $20 for the hour, or they could be very difficult and you would make $15 for the hour.

The point being that you have to gauge your *hourly* earnings on how many minutes per hour you can transcribe AND SEND BACK FULLY FORMATTED and proofed.

Keep in mind many of these jobs take up a lot of time with formatting, (timestamps for example).

I am not saying it is impossible to make $30 or more in one particular hour, but that ON AVERAGE I don't think you can make that much.

Again, it depends on quality of audio, formatting requirements, and proofing. So ask those questions, and about the dictators when determining whether this is a $10/hour job, or upwards of $30/hour.

just want to add, if this is not medical, it might be more than one speaker - even only 2 end up talking over each other a lot.

[ In Reply To ..]
you go over those parts more than once trying to hear the one and get that down, then start that process over to get what the other person is saying. And if a focus GROUP? Well, good luck.

Not sure if you mentioned what type of work -

Sounds like the ad I saw for telephone conversations and focus groups - april

[ In Reply To ..]
That's not a bad pay rate compared to many others I have seen. When I worked by the audio minute doing acute care for many years, I generally transcribed 120 minutes in an 8-hour day. If my math is right, that is $15/hour. But, and a big but, this ad sounded like phone conversations and focus groups, which I have never done, but I agree with the poster above that I think you would be doing a lot of listening and re-listening to get what each person is saying, and I think that would be difficult and time consuming as they will be talking over each other. Good luck in your endeavor!

In theory 1 min equals 10 lines, that all depends - sm - XXX

on the dictator, do they talk fast, super slow, clear, mumble, horrible ESL, good ESL, good/bad American. I have an ESL who will dictate a 17 min report and I am lucky if it breaks 100 lines, takes me about 35 mins to type. (2:1 to 3:1 for this particular doctor). I can usually estimate my work by the # of mins, if I have 60 mins I will most likely make $60 (paid by line), but that is not carved in stone, some days I make a lot less, others a lot more. I have seen on here that $1 is the absolute lowest anyone should go when paid by the audio minute. If you are transcribing meetings though with multiple speakers it should be more though as that is a lot harder to do. ----------so to actually answer your question, based on the 1 min = 10 lines, then 300 lines would be 30mins of the dictation, and you would make $30 an hour.

Can Someone Tell Me About Pay By Audio Minute/page?
Sep 28, 2013

I am getting ready to test for this company (not medical) for a transcription job. They advised me that their starting pay (depending on account) is 0.40 per audio minute up to $1.25 per audio minute and then they have some accounts that pay 0.65 per page up to $1.75 per page. Does anyone know if I could make decent money doing this full-time? I know it depends on speed and quality of audio (which is supposed to be good) but I am just wondering how things go based on this type of pay option. ...

Pay Per Audio Talking Minute
Jan 16, 2015

Note, these are non-MT jobs. I have been applying to jobs that pay per "audio talking minute." These are all basically customer service jobs which might include a little tech help and also might include some upselling. Anyone have a take on this? After I quit MT, I SWORE I would never do any job that was not hourly or otherwise a guaranteed amount per paycheck. Has anyone done this type of work? I guess I'm curious what "audio talking minute" means. I'm assuming it means not ...

Fox Transcriptions Pay Of 40-50 Cents Per Audio Minute
Feb 06, 2013

Even at 50 cents an audio minute, if you get a 10-minute report that would equate to $5.00. Usually it takes 30 minutes to do a 10-minute report so that would mean one would receive $10.00 an hour. If only getting 40 cents, that's $8.00 an hour. PFFT! I don't see how this is any improvement over our standard slave wages, yet their ad sounds like they invented the wheel or sliced bread. With a name like "Fox," it's got to be bad. (Apologies to Smucker's.) ...

Job Pays 30 Cents Per Audio Minute, Geez
Jan 18, 2013

So there is job posted that pays 30 cents an audio minute.  How generous!  You figure depending on the dictator and difficulty of transcript 60 minutes of audio is equal to 3 hours of transcribing.  Granted, most of the time it does not take that long, but just in case for good measure we'll say 3 hours for 60 audio minutes.  Do the math!  30 cents a minute x 60 (1 hr)= 1800.  So another words, if you divide 1800 by 3 you get your hourly rate = 6 buck ...

Same Amount Of Work, Less Pay?
Dec 04, 2013

Does anyone else suspect their company is fiddling with the software, thereby paying less to MTs for the same amount of work?  I switched accounts last summer, within the same company, to a hospital that pays more, sure that my pay would increase.  Lo and behold, I just noticed on my paycheck that I'll make about 5,000 to 8,000 less this year than last, and, if anything, I'm working more hours.  Truly infuriating because there is no way to prove it. ...
