Radiology paid per minute? Is $1/dictated minute good, bad, average? - thisMT

Posted: Mar 01, 2010

Have 4 years experience.  Mostly acute care/basic 4.   Got a job offer for Radiology using Meditech platform and pay offered is $1 per dictated minute.  This is an IC job.  Haven't done radiology exclusively before and haven't been paid per dictated minute either.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

My thoughts are don't work a set shift as an IC - please do not do it!!!

I think I know what ad you are looking at and I wish MTs would stop accepting set shifts as ICs. It makes it really hard for us true ICs to find work since the MTSOs know there are MTs out there that will let them get away with it.

I wouldn't work per dictated minute. It's never worth it!

and they have to pay your taxes. They want the best of both worlds.

Pros and Cons depend on the dictator when being paid by the dictated minute - Janie

It has been a long time since I did Radiology and that was in a hospital where we were paid by the hour, but if I remember correctly, there were a lot of what we called “normal” or “standard” reports where the doctor said basically:  “Jane Doe, MR # 1111111, Normal Chest.”  All we had to do was call up the “normal” report and stick it in.

The only problem I can see with being paid per dictated minute is not knowing how many normal reports a Radiologist can dictate in a minute.  I know the ones we had talked a mile a minute because they had tons of reports to get through each day.

Being paid by the dictated minute would be a BAD proposition if:

1.  The dictator talks fast.

2.  There are lots of demographics that have to be filled in or at least verified before you can insert the report text.

3.  The Radiologist has a specialty that is not familiar to you and you end up having to look up every other word.

4.  If they expect you to work a set schedule (for example, 8 to 5), they probably also have set minimums of total lines per day or total number of reports per day that they will probable expect you meet within a few days of starting.  Not much time for learning.

If it takes you 10 minutes to transcribe 1 dictated minute, you will only be making $6 an hour.

Just something to think about if you have not done Radiology exclusively before.  I might be tempted to try it out, but still keep my current job, just in case.

Good luck to you.

I'd say probably not. - drivebyposter

Consider that it takes on average 3x as long to transcribe as to dictate. For a 1 minute dictation, you are looking at making $1 for a dictation that would take roughly 3 minutes to type. Yes that technically could equate to about $20/hour - but it won't if the dictator is even moderately speedy, as they often are.

Even with a slower speaker, if they make errors or change their mind a lot, you will have a hard time making good $

On the other hand, if this account uses a lot of templates (normals) it could work out.

Meditech is one of the worst platforms as well so I'd be surprised if $1.00/dictation is a good rate.

Been doing Radiology for many years -by the minute could be OK but only under the right circumstances.

I'm losing money on dictated minute account - be very careful!

The problem is - they do a lot of VERY short normals. Its a radnet account and there's a bunch of toggling back and forth. There are more than 10 steps per dictation - time consuming little steps like select the doctor in 2 places, look up and type in accession number, plug in the normal from an F2 pull down menu, etc. Some days my dictations are mostly 0.06 dictated minutes each, which means even at a line credit of 10 lines per dictated minute, I'm getting 0.6 lines per each one and losing money on every normal I type because of having to go through so many steps for each. Its the quantity of normals that are killing my paycheck, because they are the majority of jobs I get on this account - its like working for free.

Anyway, I did the math. If I worked this same account at the $1/DM IC rate you are offered, I'd make a little more - but as IC 40% would have to go straight in the bank for quarterly tax payments, and I'd end up keeping even less than I am now.

Part time it might be worth it; but they want full time. Maybe its a dream account with lots of long dictations full of long pauses (that's your money maker when getting paid by the dictated minute). But until you take the job you're not going to know whether the account is a stinker or a winner. Personally, I need to keep my insurance where its at, so I can't go FT IC. If I was completely unemployed, I might take the risk; otherwise, I'd rather get paid by the line (the normals on my account above have 5-10 lines each).

Best of luck.

If they use a lot of standards it isn't, a standard - SM

can be all of 4 or 5 seconds. Would take quite a few to even build up to a minute's worth of dictation.
