MT Market Research - zero

Posted: Oct 15, 2013

Hey everyone,

I'm doing some market research on transcription and was wondering if you might be able to give me some pointers?

Firstly I'm trying to figure out who the biggest players are and I've come up with Nuance and M*Modal. These seem to be by far the biggest, but I've also found some smaller companies like Presyce, Superior Global Solutions, TransTech, Acusis and MedScribe - are there any others I'm missing?

I'm also looking at the pricing these companies charge their customers and there doesn't seem to be much out there. What I have found are rates from smaller companies who price by 60 character line - and the prices seem to range from a 5-25 cents per line - is this about right? Do most companies charge per line like this?

From an operational point of view, I was also wondering whether most medical transcriptionists have access to the electronic health record of the system they're working with or is it simply audio files that get transcribed to a text file that's then sent back to the hospital?

Any advice you can give is massively appreciated!

Cheers,

Francis

What is the purpose of your research?
What are you going to do with the information?
What is your agenda?
What kind of detrimental effect will the results of your research have on American MTs, who are already kicked around enough?
Since your focus is on the companies, why not address your questions to them? Why ask the MTs? We are not privy to most of the information you want except the parts that are involved directly in how we work, which I'm thinking is really probably none of your business. If you want to know how the companies price their services, ask them, not us. We have no way of knowing.

Zero - MT as we knew it is over

First of all, this sounds very similar to some questions "new MTs" have been asking recently for school projects. Why anyone would go to school to be an MT is beyond my comprehension, to say the least.

Regarding the "biggest players," they are all a bunch of con artists, IMO. You are correct though, Nuance and M*Modal are on the top of that list.

Next, regarding their pricing and what they charge their customers, it doesn't really matter to us lowly MTs. We get mere pennies of what these companies get for profit, actually minimum wage at best. I am not sure where you got your information about a 60 character line, either. If you're lucky, you might see 65 with spaces, but the latest MTSO "craze" is the VBC, just another way to screw us MTs.

Finally, with regard to that operational point of view you're asking about, MTs are discouraged from communicating with each other (a concept I will never understand), never mind having access to any EHR. Maybe other posters will chime in here but that's what I have to offer.

I believe you came to - the wrong place to

ask these types of questions. People around here are so suspicious of the motives of others that they are no longer willing to take anybody at face value, hence the snippy response to your question by the first replier, outlining and asking "what your motives are." My goodness. life has jaded just about every MT I know, but mostly those here. Sorry about your responses. Wish I could help in some way, but I don't know the answers to your questions either. good luck.

A legitimate researcher - xx

would have identified himself and the organization that employs him. He would have named and described the research project for which he was asking questions. He would have explained why he wanted the information. And he most definitely would have explained what was going to be done with the information he received and how it would be evaluated.

The OP, if he does get any information, will have no provenance for whatever he is told. He has no way of verifying the sources or of determining how knowledgeable any respondent might be or whether they have the appropriate background and access to provide information he can consider reliable.

It is appropriate to be suspicious and ask a few questions of our own before handing out information to some random loon on the internet.

Sorry - Zero

Sorry if I struck a nerve, I am genuinely researching medical transcription for a class but after reading some of the posts on here and learning more about he industry I understand why you might be suspicious.

Thank you for the couple of genuine replies, it's useful to at least know that Nuance and Mmodal are the biggest companies.

Thanks.
market research versus education project research - just to let you know
[ In Reply To ..]
The definition of market research is:

the action or activity of gathering information about consumers' needs and preferences

What you asked about had absolutely nothing to do with consumer needs and preferences. It had to do with what your instructor told you to find out about an industry that you have chosen to pay money to enter into.

That you failed to ask yourself these questions PRIOR to pursuing this field speaks volumes of the lack of preparation you choose before making major life decisions.

Let's say you entered this field of study 24 months ago. This information was out there then. You could have researched it and made a well-informed decision about your education. You see, what M*Model or Nuance charges has absolutely nothing to do with how much they pay the people who work for them or how you will find a job when they require 2 years experience. You are going to be left asking the question: How do I get a job when I don't have 2 years' experience? I hoped you asked that question to your school and they have a proven track record in doing that for their graduating students.

As for your dismissal of "the couple of genuine replies," the person pointing out the legitimacy of your question was being genuine even if it was not a palatable response to the "research" you need. I thought it was in fact the most genuine response.

While it may come across that I am being hard on you and don't want you to succeed, you would be only half right. I am being hard on you because I don't want you to fail. If you stick you head in the sand any longer about your educational pursuits, you will not be successful. If you aren't successful and your parents don't care to maintain your lifestyle, you will probably further your education in another direction(perhaps with student loans, perhaps with pubic funds), but until and unless you research beforehand, you will end up where you are now.

Best wishes to your future. I sincerely hope you succeed in a profitable career. I wish you had learned MT was not that particular vehicle prior to having signed on the dotted line of that MT school.

What class? What school? If you came to our board to ask questions, I believe we have the right to know who you are and whom you represent.

I used to work for 10 cents a line, then 8, then 7, then was paid by report. The last work I did was copy/paste in the electronic health record. Hope that helps some. I am no longer working in the transcription field. And am not bitter.

It is important to project a professional image in everything you do. As Nick pointed out, identifying your school and project would have helped.

Being clear about the purpose of your project, i.e., "an assignment for an MT class" or "for a market research class," would have been better.

Using an alias other than "Zero" would have helped, too. It implies that you think of yourself as a loser. Anything from failing grades to "nothing" to that dim-bulb character in Beetle Bailey come to mind.

Honesty, openness, and projecting a positive self-image are really necessary during job hunts. Confidence is appealing. Self-deprecation is not appealing.

Loser-ism, jokester-ism, and goofball-ism are only useful for getting along in high school. After that, it's time to get a professional makeover.
