Laid off, no notice - Pat

Posted: Nov 19, 2009

I just got laid off from Proscript in an email, I think this was very cold, no warning, no 2 weeks notice, nothing......I have worked for them since 2005, this is just wrong.....

Was any reason given? - Wondering

[ In Reply To ..]
Have lost 2 jobs inhouse to outsourcing but had a little warning beforehand. It is a hard pill to swallow, both jobs were over 10 years each.

I guess they lost the account i was on, but this happened before for the same company and they placed me on another account.....now nothing....I just really think no notice is very cold...on their part

Just a suggestion - onemore

You rely on yourself and don't rely on them. In other words, never dedicate yourself to one company or you will go down fast. Always keep options open. I learned that you can screw yourself in the long run. I recently was taken off a big money maker account, although I was given two week's notice. Yes this hurt, but I do legal transcription and have a contract locally for a physician's office. I think I am stronger now with this because after being persistent, I have three companies I work for and am still searching for more. If one job ends, there are always more. Good luck.

Sorry to say, but these days most companies - ht

lay off with no notice. My BF's company just laid off 28 people, given notice and then they were to pack up personal belongings and escorted to the door, being watched by security the entire time.
I personally saw the same thing happen to my boss one time - Lady
[ In Reply To ..]
Working inhouse at a hospital and this boss was terminated, had to clear out her desk under guard and escorted off the property the same day. Needless to say, a meeting had to be called because everyone there thought they might be the next to be shown the door.
I saw the same thing at a government facility... - my boss was given 1 hour
[ In Reply To ..]
to clean out his desk and then he was escorted to the gate of the facility and told never to come back there again. We never knew why he was done that way.

Pat, Check UE laws in your state and "no notice fee." - Fingers

[ In Reply To ..]
If you were Employee status. In my state, in addition to pay owed, vacation time, severance, I was also owed $1,100 as a "no notice fee." Got it all without argument.

I'd rather be laid off than left to twist in the wind - slowly going under

[ In Reply To ..]
You can get unemployment, right? Based on a fairly good paycheck, right? Doesn't that beat sitting in front of your computer day after day with no work? Doesn't that beat getting crosstrained on a zillion crappy accounts and watch your paycheck decline every week? If I finally do get laid off, my unemployment will be based on making practically nada!

Then, why are you letting this happen to you? - Lady

[ In Reply To ..]
I read yours and others on here saying exactly the same thing day after day. Why are you just sitting and no work to do? How long will you survive on 0 work? This is unbelievable to me.

UNEMPLOYMENT - Tina

[ In Reply To ..]
Can you draw unemployment? If laid off and you were an employee, then I would definitely apply for it. I do agree with you though, kind of heartless of them to do it with no notice and through an e-mail...especially just before the holidays! Best of luck to you!

I was a statutory employee......Florida is what they call a common law state, so am in the process of checking on unemployment.....that is a big question????

Am I missing something here? Thought common law - L

Laid off, no notice - Pat
[ In Reply To ..]
No, common law also relates to employment as there is a fine line between employee status and statutory status, there is a common law test they give and depends on the answers.

I think this is just an example of how much employees mean to MOST employers. They are pretty much looked at as expendable machines. Then you have companies suing employees for saying things that put them in a bad light never mind if it is true. I'm glad I'm out of the work force.

Good luck to you. This must be a terrible blow to the ego. I hope you find something better.

DON'T NEED LAYOFF FOR UNEMPLOYMENT - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
While losing your job through layofgnot fault of your own would definitely qualify you for UE in most states (usu. 1/2 of salary, may vary state-to-state),often overlooked is voluntarily leaving a job for GOOD CAUSE. "Good cause" may be any one of a long list of reasons, for example:

1) First & foremost, violation by MTSO of the law, labor law or otherwise,

2) Being forced to accept a DRASTIC CUT IN PAY or work hours (LOL-anything come to mind?)

3) Not being paid MINIMUM HOURLY WAGE, federally-mandated, whether paid on production or hourly, as CEO or picking oranges-must be paid MW.

4) Being subjected to a hostile work environment or one that seriously threatens physical/mental health (LMAO again- not us MTs!).

5) Being made to do work, or change in work title much different than what you were hired for (Moi - an Editor??)

6) Labor law also stipulates that all REQUIRED employee-performed work BE PAID... unless the duties are done on a strictly voluntary basis (anyone volunteer to do demographics that should be client's responsibility, enless research ad nauseum. (To quote a supe, "...MTs to do an EXHAUSTIVE search ...". (Right - she's going to pay for YOUR time out of HER pocket.) Most MTs could probably write an exhaustive list of their own (unpaid work/duties) to add to these.

Best bet is to check home state's UE laws particular to that state.

P.S: I LOVE the one about eligibility for drastic cuts in pay - about 50-60% for VR/SR - my state (southeast) provides 50% of salary averaged over past 52 weeks.

I'm sorry, Pat. You deserve much better. - MissIndigo

There is no reason why a reputable company such as Proscript cannot carry out layoffs courteously and respectfully. I agree, this is just wrong.

BTW, years back I saw this often working in commercial property and casualty insurance specializing in church and private school coverage. Shockingly often ministers and pastors would dutifully follow to the letter instructions from insurance company lawyers not to speak with injured parisioner claimants, rather than seek advice on how to follow instructions regarding the claim and still provide spiritual and social support. I saw many people in times of trouble effectively cast off from their churches as a result and, when claims were serious, even a few by the members of congregations they'd belonged to for many years. When I could I'd try to delicately remind our clients that lawyers give only legal advice and that it's up to them to decide how to follow it morally and responsibly. I expect it's pretty much the same today with employers. Some people toss aside all other considerations when given an order to follow.

Sorry, Pat. I know how you feel. Same thing happened to me last year; in an email with absolutely no warning...BAM...we can no longer give you any work :( I am finding I have to be employed by 3 different companies just to make this business work. As soon as possible, I am DONE with transcription.

your area right, should not be like that. No way i would - darlene

work for them and even by "EMAIL" geez.

So sorry this happened to you. An thank you for alerting/sharing with the rest of the MTs

Two years ago I was laid off 10 days before Christmas. No notice, no severance pay, nothing. I had been with the company 7+ years with excellent annual reviews. They called it "financial reorganization."

It seems that this method of doing business is more common in the MT industry than one would think.

Last year about this time, a bunch were laid off a day or two within Thanksgiving on an account that went bye bye to India. We found out later that the managers knew well ahead of time what was going on, but were ordered to kept this a secret until the last minute. The reason given was that they needed the MTs to keep working up until the last minute. Duh.

In retrospect, there had been signs. Work had dwindled for weeks, as it was slowly and secretly being transitioned offshore.. The USA MTs asked managers why the work was slow, why the volume was low, and were never told the truth until they logged on on the fateful day and found that the account was gone. No notice given, just as the holiday season was beginning.

That was the day that I learned how to be an MT machine and not to put all my eggs in one basket.

Recently laid-off and I am looking for a job. I was just wondering, being an IC medical transcriptionist has anyone ever qualified for unemployment?? Laid Off
Apr 04, 2013

I was laid off today too.  I have been with the company for 8 years.  I consistently make my quota by a long shot, at over 375 lph.  I had my audit a month ago at 99.3%.  I am a single mom trying to support my family, and no, there was no warning, no severance, no nothing.  My supervisor said it is across the board, and she did not have an answer for me as to why me.  I spent the day working on my resume and job hunting and came here to see if anyone had any answers.  To those of you in t ...

Laid Or Lain? Help
Jul 15, 2011

I have this hint that normally helps me:  “lie, lay, lain” (to recline); “lay, laid, laid” (to place or put down). The sentence is:  "The patient was brought into the endoscopy suite and 'laid' in the left decubitus position."  I was thinking it should be lain, but the patient was technically "put" in that position, so it should be laid.  Correct?  I've gone and confused myself. ...
