LPH average for straight typing - Please no neg about MTSOs, just a # - sm

Posted: Feb 28, 2013

If you are doing straight typing - or you did in the past - what was roughly your lines per hour?

I realize many people have lost these types of accounts and are extremely frustrated with MTSOs, etc.  That is not what I am asking about though...I am just looking for numbers.

Thank you Cool

Maybe you can tell us why you want to know? - sm

I'm afraid that coming in telling people what you do and don't want them to talk about is not likely to get you very many responses, positive ones anyway. Good luck, though.

I am just trying to find out what the average is... - sm

I was just curious as to what the average is. I don't have any MT friends, so I asked here.

I have noticed that if anyone says anything about straight typing, the post typically becomes yet another gripe session about how horrible MTSOs are all MT is going down the drain, etc. I am not saying that this isn't the case...I just was looking for numbers and not a general commentary on the state of MT today.

I don't think asking a question and stating that I do understand people are upset about MT today but that I would prefer to please stay on topic is telling people what I do or don't want them to do, nor that it warranted a snide, seemingly paranoid response such as yours.

Thank you, though.

I am not that fast; wish I was.

This week, I averaged.,,SM - Old Anon

184 lph, last week 229 lph. I very small percentage of my lines are straight and when I straight type now, I am very clunky at it, even with my expander. It also depends on the report types and the dictator quality.

180 to 225 lph - Straight typing. - nm

How are you measuring the line? - VBC or spaces included?

[ In Reply To ..]
I've done both and now I don't do just straight transcription but also do SR editing.

When I did straight transcription with spaces, headers and footers included, I averaged around 300 to 350 per hour. VBC w/o headers and footers, I average about 225 to 235 an hour.

SR editing I average around 380 per hour.

It varies - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
a great deal depending on the doctor. I assume this is with spaces because I have done both with spaces and without, and VBC feels like you are typing and going nowhere.

But, pretty much like others above, generally in range of 200 give or take. Right now have several doctors who routinely have dictations of 7-10 minutes who have such long pauses or change of mind that I only get 40-50 lines at most.

MTSOs need to grasp what slows production to a crawl (sm) - Angie

[ In Reply To ..]
Poor sound quality.
Providing unnecessary demographics.
Never pausing while reviewing chart.
Not using last name of doctors dictated.
Demographic errors.
Research - info that should be dictated.
Slurring dictation.
Laughing while dictating.
Yawning while dictating.
Eating while dictating.
No work available.
Jobs only seconds long.
More work bookkeeping than typing.
More work researching than typing.

ONE of these problems can cause an MT to not make line count. Since these problems are no longer addressed with the clients, rather blamed on the MT, you end up with overflow and poor moral.

I am not bashing MTSOs - I work for one I'm very happy with. However, the above describes the variables that effect production, which are out of the control of the MTs/Editors.

As an IC I always offered to do free transcriptions before quoting a line rate, as any contractor assesses the work required before bidding or quoting a price.

150-200 - nm

I was never given a minimum LPH, but I feel I'm not getting a good line count.  I've been here about a couple months, straight typing, Ambulatory.  Just wondering what others are averaging and any tips to improve line count?  I've been doing this for 10 years, but have always been paid hourly before coming here.  ...

ASR Vs Straight Typing
Oct 15, 2010

Got new accounts for the last 2 weeks that are not ASR (yet) so have been doing about 90% straight typing.  I have been averaging about $20 more per day than when I do ASR.  They can sell whatever snake oil they want, I can type faster and make more money straight typing than I can with their much-touted fabulous ASR --- EVEN ON BRAND NEW UNFAMILIAR ACCOUNTS.  ...

Why Suddenly Less ASR, More Straight Typing?
Nov 19, 2009

Hmm, let's see.  We get a letter from MQ extolling our virtues as MTs, more and more info about nationalizing the EMR with Verizon, etc. and I notice I'm not the only one getting less ASR, more direct typing.  Could be a coincidence, but could be MQ is gathering statistics on us, how the voice recognition program of MQ compares with our production as MTs versus straight typing on our own.  Could MQ be using us as guinea pigs right now to pad their statistics to prove the ...

ASR Versus Straight Typing

Re Straight Typing Versus VR.
Mar 08, 2012

I have a pretty good and accurate typing speed, which has made me pretty good money in the past.  Then along comes VR.  I have had somewhat success with it, if the right dictation is placed on it.  The problem comes in when a company tries to put anything and everything on VR that does not belong there.  It defeats the purpose of using it in the first place. I am told that the computer calculates the accuracy of a report.  If it is 80% or more, it goes on VR.  ...

VR Is NOT Twice As Fast As Straight Typing!
Nov 28, 2012

I used to love my job, being an at-home medical transcriptionist. I used to make around $20-25 an hour straight typing and thought being an at-home medical transcriptionist was the best job ever! The flexibility of working from home and flexing my hours was great! I could get the kids off to school, work for a couple of hours, go shopping, work for a couple of hours, just so I made production requirements and everything was great! Unfortunately, things changed and they started making us ...
