Is it that hard or am I just lucky? - really being serious here

Posted: Nov 15, 2011

I have been looking around the boards for a bit and I see everyone complaining about working for peanuts (or less) for their MTSO.  I currently work at home for a somewhat local hospital in my area.  They sent all of their transcriptionists home about 6 years ago and their coders are home now too.  I know that the other big hospital system in my area has all of their transcriptionsts at home too.  Is it really that hard to find a job like mine or did I just get lucky?

I know that we hire from time to time and when we do, we have a REALLY hard time filling the positions with qualified people.  The pay is pretty good and incentive is offered.  The benefits are great and my boss and QA people are easy, easy, easy to work with.

I just hate to see what some of you are going through.  Feeling really blessed right now.

LUCKY - UNEASY

I actually have an interview at a local hospital next week. I hear so much about hospitals outsourcing that I am hesitant about this job. It is decent pay with benefits and I will not have to fight for work or be tied to the computer for 18 hours a day just trying to get enough line count to survive, but still I am afraid that if I take the job something will happen. So, I think maybe you are lucky and hopefully I will be too.

I really hope it works out for you!! We used to outsource, but our management decided that they would rather keep all of their work in house (strange but true) about 4 years ago and since then, we have been so busy we can barely keep up. We are usually on mandatory overtime, which is nice for the extra money, but I really, really look forward to my days off. Our minimum line counts are VERY achievable and the one to be able to get incentive is too. Good luck to you!

thank you! Good luck - luckyladyinca

I wish you luck and hope all works out. Yes, I am tied to a computer 18 hours a day or more, but there is satisfaction in having your own accounts also. That satisfaction I could never achieve working with nationals. The bonus: No cell phone or VoIP dictation! They use landlines and speak extremely clear for me. No struggling through ESL.

same here we are blessed - ohiocarole

I wouldn't be surprised to hear we both work for the same system.

Happy People Rarely Post But Misery Seeks Company - As with anything else

[ In Reply To ..]
The happy MTs I know don't post, because they know the miserable ones will attack and tell them (1) they really aren't happy, but they are too dumb to know they aren't happy or (2) you may be happy now, but you won't be. Just watch. They will arrive to deflate your happy balloon.

Wow... - OP

Glad to know I've been deluding myself all these years. ;-)

I'm happy you're doing well... I used to work in a hosp - before they outsourced...

those were the good old days for me. Not so much now at least in the work scene.

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones too. I feel bad because - Noney

I get so burned out and I start complaining about hating my job and then I get on here and I realize I should just shut up and count my blessings. Although I am getting the uneasy feeling that eventually my hospital is going to completely send out all of transcription, especially when I get on to work every evening and there are 7 service MTs working and 3 actual employees. It's a little disconcerting.

There's a community college in my area that offers a 12-month coding certificate program, so perhaps I will quietly go back to school, keeping my fingers cross that my good job will hold out just a little while longer, but I promise I won't complain anymore! LOL

Noney - OP

I was thinking about doing the same thing "just in case" but I really don't want to. I really do like my job. Sure, I complain at times because of some of the dictators but for the most part, I enjoy it.

I wonder how many of us hospital employees there are here.

Before you do that - sm

Find out if the graduates are able to pass the CCS exam. It's great to pass the CPC, but you need the CCS in order to be hired as a coder. Otherwise you are basically wasting your time and your money, although if you learn anything at all, knowledge is never really wasted. You just don't want to find out later that you could have spent that time more wisely.

To everyone that is emailing me about jobs - OP

You must live in the area to work for my hospital. We are required to drive in for meetings once a month. I urge you to check the job boards of your own local hospitals weekly. Ours changes on a daily basis.

Lots of hospitals in my area and some outsource - sm

their transcription and the biggest hospital is starting to go EHR so MTs were let go in the hospital (a few still there) and in the doctor office/specialist setting since a lot of the practices, i.e., GI, GU, OB/GYN, etc., are owned by the hospital. One specialist office had 17 MTs and all but 7 were let go.

Blessed for sure! - justme

working for a hospital and an MTSO. I have worked for both and will be going back to work in a hospital soon. The MTSO is just a middleman who leaves very little in the way of money or extras for us. Greed took over.

it may not always be that way - typing crazy

One of our local hospitals here now outsource to the Q. Some transcriptionists were there for over 30 years. You never know if your hospital will start outsourcing. Chances are they will if they know they can pay less which is what the Q promises since they outsource to India. I work for a large MTSO (not Q) and I'm glad that I do because I got very comfortable with a small company that was bought out by the Q and had to make a fast decision to start applying for other jobs. I'm pretty certain this company won't be bought out by the Q as this one is big too. I'm happy for you that things are great and you have great benefits and pay, etc, but that may not always be the case. The transcription world is changing. That is fact.

Typing crazy - Old Pro

The Q is the single worst thing to happen to the MT world. They have no care or compassion for their MTs or for anyone else. (Did anyone read the hospitals' lawsuits against the Q? It didn't come out so well for the Q.) I would do anything but work for the Q again. They are monsters.

Yes, it really IS that bad right now - Old Pro

We are in a DEPRESSION. I know, I know, the talking heads call it a RECESSION because they dare not say the D word, but by any Econ 101 definition, it is a depression. I read the Wall Street Journal on a regular basis (I like to play the market, don't ask me why) and, lemme tell you, people are losing their shirts. I took a big hit over the past couple of years myself.

lucky prior to EMR income was $100,000 year - luckyladyinca

[ In Reply To ..]
I say lucky because it could be worse. Prior to EMR, I was making a lot, but well things certainly have changed; however, unlike a lot of other MTs and MTSOs I know, I do still have accounts, one I enjoy also. There are worse jobs out there. I have certainly had them. I look at it as lucky. I have NO shortage of work on my desk and new clients added.

hard to find good people here, too - Rita, CMT

[ In Reply To ..]
The OP stated "we have a REALLY hard time filling the positions with qualified people." Same here. I am in-house in a radiology department at $22/hour plus line incentive. We posted an opening for an in-house, about half-time plus some weekends, all that on day shift. Only one person applied, and not credentialed, and not so qualified. What gives?

hard - KT16

Where do you live? Maybe we can move there for those open positions. We are outsourcing now -- Hartford area

Hard To Take It Seriously--sm

I am actually checking FIESA right now as I was placed on a new account almost 2 weeks ago but I am having a hard time taking these scores seriously as I just saw a report of mine.  I left a blank , I did hear welder but the sentence was poor and I clearly heard retired earlier.  The sentence QA put in is:  He works welder.  I kid you not.  This next paycheck I pay a bill off.  There are things I need some money for and I keep trying to remind myself of that so ...

Hard To Believe What Mgm Asks You To Do

This past week editing a report and the dictator was giving the diagnosis. By the way this was an ESL so lots of the voice recognition was wrong to start with, numerous corrections had to be made. I sent instant message telling mgm and was told after the fact I should have divided the categories. I am not a physician, could not differentiate that clearly to start with, the guy c ...

No Matter How Hard I Try, I Just Cannot Keep My Lph Up.
Jan 30, 2015

I'm surprised I haven't received performance management yet. I just cannot keep my line count up high enough since going to Fluency 7.6. This is too frustrating. Maybe I should copy a job into Word and see if the line count matches. Although, it could be because the ASR output has been so horrible and I am stopping 3x more to make corrections. I don't get why ASR outputs synonyms of what was said and alternative ways to phrase what was said, not to mention the downright w ...

Now Transcription Is Hard To Apply To

I Can't Believe I Worked So Hard For So Little Money.
