I live up near the Napa State Hospital. They were running an ad for an MT, and I answered it, but got no reply. I was able to get the number of the transcription dept. at the hospital, and talked to the supervisor. She sounded surprised that they were running an ad, because they weren't hiring.

She said you can't even apply for one of the state jobs until you've gone through an extensive testing process, and then get on a list. For me this would involve traveling to Sacramento to test, all for job that most likely doesn't exist.

I notice there are CA State ads for MTs at the mental hospitals, and office workers at the prisons all the time, yet often there is no hiring going on. The supervisor I talked to said that most likely they just run the ads continuously to have a group of already-tested people on file.

The other thing to check for in state job ads is whether or not they're actually accepting applicants that aren't already working for the state. Some hiring is only done laterally.

way between LA and San Francisco. It's very expensive to live, just like the rest of CA. Those jobs are HARD to get because it's a coveted state job....I imagine not too much turnaround.

That's what I was told by the Napa Hosp. person - I talked to. MTs didnt quit, just retired.

I've also applied for other county and city jobs within CA, and the competition for them is brutal. Hundreds of job-seekers applying for ONE position. All younger, and with more up-to-date skills. I finally gave up looking.

The only cheap place to live in CA is up in - Lake County, with all the meth-heads.

I've been watching CA real estate for years, wanting to go back. There are several affordable communities in CA. Paradise, Redding, Red Bluff, Tehachapi, Lancaster and many other areas in southern CA bordering the desert. I'm looking at a spot in Lake Co. called Spring Valley, up in the hills above the Clearlake where you can find homes as low as 139K. Good ones are snatched up right away this time of year, but I'm going to fly there to check these places out in a couple of weeks. Also the Sierra foothills from Sacramento to southern CA has very affordable real estate. Slowly going back up now so the time to buy is now.

Go to realtor dot com and search for a home between 79,000 and 160,000, put in a town and search within 25 miles. There are many affordable places, but much more in the fall & winter.

or in little crime pockets, and believe me, there are a lot of them up there. There are abandoned mine shafts everywhere, and they beckon to criminal activity like a bright beacon light. You can be in a pretty nice area, then go a mile or two down a dirt road or into an adjacent canyon, and you might as well be in another country. One time I took a little side-trip in my 4WD down a steep dirt lane out of Foresthill, just for fun. Ended up in a canyon dotted with small houses (more shack than house), and lots of scary-looking, EXTREMELY suspicious onlookers poking their heads out their doors watching me like I was the one up to no good. Thought I was a narc, most likely. Same goes for the canyons near Pollack Pines and Placerville. I would really research the area I was interested in before buying anything in the Sierra foothills. That would also include having experts check to be sure a mine shaft doesn't run under the house that's priced so cheaply. A few years ago someone was killed when his dream-house suddenly got swallowed by a goldmine cave-in right under it.

I've been living in Lake Co since 2008, transcribing from home. Great view of the lake while working, deer roaming. Absolutely LOVE IT! So quiet.

I've lived and work in Lake County since 2008, and yes they have their seedy areas like anywhere else. We elected a new sheriff and it's gotten a lot better.

Have any of your hospitals purchased a Nuance VR product that they've used for their in-house transcriptionists? If so, does the VR quality get better and better since you have a limited number of MTs doing the editing? My job could be in jeopardy because we might be merging with another clinic, and there are no other local in-house MT openings. I am excited to say that I have a upcoming job interview to work in-house in behavorial health. I am not real pleased to work in-house and will not get the opportunity to work from home which makes me sad.
