Hospital Transcription Advice - MaybeMT

Posted: Jan 21, 2013

I just need some advice on a job possibility. Up until last year, I had worked as an at-home MT (ortho/PT, dabbled in other specialities when needed) for 6 years. I then quit that job as things were going downhill for the company and I needed something better. I found an office job P/T that paid well and was possibly going into a F/T position. Well, due to budget issues the job not only is not going F/T, but I am also lucky to still have my job at this point. So I started looking for work. I found a transcriptionist opening F/T at a local hospital. The only requirements posted are HS Diploma needed and typing 60 wpm. Do hospitals pay well or no? Should I not apply as I only have expertise in two areas? I'm just concerned about going for something, getting hired, and then second-guessing what I may have gotten myself into. I really do miss transcription, to be honest. I really did enjoy the work. I just couldn't take the stress and little pay for it anymore. Any advice or first-hand insight on what I may be looking at would be appreciated. As well as maybe some websites that could help me brush up on terminology and sample dictations. Thank You!

I would definitely apply... - I think you

just have to get it from the horse's mouth what the pay is and if it is good for where you live. If you get a break and get the job, take advantage of any educational programs the hospital offers and learn new skills so you won't be high and dry if (probably when) they eliminate the transcription dept.

I wish when I worked in a hospital I could have seen where MT would end up. I would have taken every class and learned every about other dept possible.

My hospital - new MT

[ In Reply To ..]
paid a range of $12-16 an hour depending on experience, plus benefits for f/t positions. An added benefit is you'd get your foot in the door and would have opportunities for other positions in the future. My hospital hasn't posted any new MT jobs in a long time though, otherwise I'd be looking into this as well.

what would it hurt to apply? - go go go

I'd give anything to be back inhouse. Inhouse jobs so seldom become available. If they don't want you they won't hire you. If you're lucky you'll get an interview and you can find out what it pays but I bet it's better than what you're making now, or what most of use are making. Good luck!

Apply, apply, apply!!!! - For more than one good reason

You should apply for that job and make every effort to get it.

It's a job, sure, but whether hospitals pay well or not, you should take it. There will be benefits involved and they will be about 25% of the total salary. (Be sure to consider that!)

Also, it will be in a health information administration department, or "medical records." Or, at least, somehow affiliated with one, or in the same hospital or facility as one . . . OK? That is your ticket out of MT.

Everybody needs to keep other jobs in mind. Everybody needs to keep improving their skills. There are loads of jobs in HIA that you could move into now, soon, or with additional training. And that training isn't all that difficult to get these days.

Do a fabulous job for them and they won't want to lose you. They'll help you develop and grow into other jobs if need be.

Options to look at are just plain med recs jobs, a move into a coding-affiliated job from which you can study and move into coding, a move into something related to release of information, privacy, etc.

Your new employer might even fund a health info admin program for you, like the excellent one at Western Governors University.

There ARE options and taking that hospital job is a way toward them. And, it's a job in and of itself.

I would go for it.

Yes, Apply - my2cents

The nice thing about a hospital is there are other people there to help you if you have a problem. I learned in-house back in the day, and I can't imagine trying to transcribe as a relative newbie at home.

I agree with the other posters, and I hope you get the job. As someone who recently saw their department go down, just be cautious. Make sure that it's a permanent full-time gig and that they are just not hiring to help them get over a backlog before they outsource it all, some places do that. During the interview, try to find out where they are in the EMR conversion process, that may give you some insight into where the job is going. While you are working there, learn all you can and definitely become a "team player." Facilities do place MTs into other positions within the organization, that is what my employer did with us. You will also have access to internal job openings if the need arises. Despite the fact that there may be a downside (as there usually is with any job), you will get benefits and PTO and maybe even a raise now and then, good luck!

what state, city? I'll apply!!! - actually would consider moving if need be.

in other words -- GO FOR IT! it won't last long.

If you would consider moving, check out Indeed and Simply Hired. - sm

There's in-house jobs all over the place if you're willing to move for one. Unfortunately I can't move and there aren't any in-house positions in my area.

thanks, I will. None in my area either. - NM

Pros and cons as with anything - Ayn

Hospitals & clinics generally pay equivalent or better and have better benefits than a service & just treat their MTs better.

Some specific things I would want to know, though, would be -- @1) Are they now using or do they plan to use speech wreck? If so, what form - front-end, back-end, point & click, combo of these? How much is speech and how much is straight transcribing? (2) What is their current pay? (3) Do they currently use a service in any capacity (overflow, weekends, nights, etc)? (4) Is the job in-house or at-home?

Only you can decide if the job sounds like a good fit for you & meets your needs.

Good Luck!

CLINIC VERSUS HOSPITAL TRANSCRIPTION
May 03, 2010

Hi all!  Quick question, which one do you think you can type more lines a day on, using your short cuts, drop ins, templates, etc., clinic transcription or hospital and why?  I have been typing acute care hospital transcription for 7 years and am thinking of taking a clinic job, but the money is slightly less.  I figure it won't count that much if clinic is as fast as my physical therapy job was I had 8 years ago.  Thanks! ...

Hospital Job?
May 14, 2011

Just curious if anyone has a remote (long-distance) position with a hospital.  If so, did you have to work inhouse initially before being able to go home or not? My last employer (the current one MTSO I work for stinks so bad I don't even consider them an employer!) was a hospital that was part of a chain.  Of 50 MTs, there was one in Canada, one in Mexico, and one in China.  However, I'm fairy certain that they were Americans who lived locally and then subsequently mov ...

Hospital Pay--is This A JOKE?
Dec 30, 2009

Okay, so halfway out of curiosity, I applied to my local hospital, which is a large regional hospital, for an MT job.  They wanted a "seasoned" MT with CMT, who transcribes 250 lines an hour.  Okay, I thought, they might actually compensate better than I think since they have well-defined high standards.  WRONG!  They are offering $11.35 AN HOUR!  What a slap in the face!  You get a whole extra dollar if you work 2nd shift.  What an insult--they just have ...

Home Vs Hospital

Was laid off in April.  Have a couple offers from transcription companies, and one from a clinic which is part of a huge school/hospital system in our area, (which actually is through a temp agency).  There are only 2 full-time NP's and a handlful of part-time NP's.  The hospital job is a 45-minute drive, 1-way, in light traffic.  Pay to start is $13, but if this temp goes to permanent, potential is much greater.  The clinic is open M-F, 8-4, closed holidays.&n ...
