Hospital Transcription - bev

Posted: Sep 06, 2012

Does anyone know of any hospitals in the U.S. currently hiring experienced MTs? I am in need of a good job with benefits that I can do from home. Please e-mail me with your response. Thanks in advance.

That is easy. Google, Indeed, monster. All the major - sm

or if they don't, they want you to work inhouse. I did see one hospital in Tennessee that wanted a remote. It didn't say if you had to live near the hospital or could be across the country.

Hospital transcriptionist employee - (sm)

Hi Bev,

I would suggest finding a list of hospitals in your state and then checking each individual hospital's web site for employment opportunities. Over the last several years I have seen several hospitals hiring transcriptionists, but what the ads often have in common is that they are either looking for in-house (sometimes with the possibility to work from home after a period of time)or when they are looking for someone to work from home they do want you to live within a certain distance (or even in-state). As far as education and experience, they usually require only a high school diploma and experience requirements do not seem as stringent as in the on-line world of MTSO (usually 0 - 1 years experience). Some may say they prefer a CMT and a few may actually require it, and then you've got the ones (like a large medical center near my home) who have a ridiculous requirement like 115 wpm typing speed.

Good luck with your search!

I just got lucky with this...sm - happyagainmt

Just today I was hired by a hospital 30 miles from my home, but I will still be able to work at home. I have had my resume in with this hospital for over a year. Back when there were no openings I submitted it. Then, I updated it whenever it expired.

Finally, they posted a job opening on their website, and I was hired. I am ecstatic. It is straight typing at a great cpl rate with full hospital benefits. Really, it could not be any better.

So my suggestion is to submit a resume whether they have an opening or not, then be very, very patient.

Good Luck!

They're paying you on production, instead of - by the hour? (nm)

I do not have any specific hospitals to name for you, but would agree with the other posters who suggested you read the advertised job openings (Monster, CareerBuilder, individual hospital HR departments, etc), submit to any that you know have their own transcription dept even if they don't have an immediate opening, and don't give up. Those jobs do exist. I've worked from home for a local hospital for 5 years. The hiring requirements were not any more stringent than an MTSO -- needed a couple years of experience and to pass the tests. They require that we live within the metro area, we do have to attend the rare in-house meeting (once or twice a year), and we did have to work in-house for a probationary period until we were familiar with the work & the program (a month for most of our MTs).

We are paid on production, we are expected to meet a minimum LPH & QA score, we have a set schedule, we are required to work 1 weekend day a month, our computer & equip is provided by the employer (we are required to have & pay for our own high-speed internet).

Good luck to you -- these jobs are rare (most hospitals outsource after all or we wouldn't have MTSOs) but definitely worth looking for!

Hospital Transcription Advice
Jan 21, 2013

I just need some advice on a job possibility. Up until last year, I had worked as an at-home MT (ortho/PT, dabbled in other specialities when needed) for 6 years. I then quit that job as things were going downhill for the company and I needed something better. I found an office job P/T that paid well and was possibly going into a F/T position. Well, due to budget issues the job not only is not going F/T, but I am also lucky to still have my job at this point. So I started looking for work. I ...

CLINIC VERSUS HOSPITAL TRANSCRIPTION
May 03, 2010

Hi all!  Quick question, which one do you think you can type more lines a day on, using your short cuts, drop ins, templates, etc., clinic transcription or hospital and why?  I have been typing acute care hospital transcription for 7 years and am thinking of taking a clinic job, but the money is slightly less.  I figure it won't count that much if clinic is as fast as my physical therapy job was I had 8 years ago.  Thanks! ...

Hospital Job?
May 14, 2011

Just curious if anyone has a remote (long-distance) position with a hospital.  If so, did you have to work inhouse initially before being able to go home or not? My last employer (the current one MTSO I work for stinks so bad I don't even consider them an employer!) was a hospital that was part of a chain.  Of 50 MTs, there was one in Canada, one in Mexico, and one in China.  However, I'm fairy certain that they were Americans who lived locally and then subsequently mov ...

Hospital Pay--is This A JOKE?
Dec 30, 2009

Okay, so halfway out of curiosity, I applied to my local hospital, which is a large regional hospital, for an MT job.  They wanted a "seasoned" MT with CMT, who transcribes 250 lines an hour.  Okay, I thought, they might actually compensate better than I think since they have well-defined high standards.  WRONG!  They are offering $11.35 AN HOUR!  What a slap in the face!  You get a whole extra dollar if you work 2nd shift.  What an insult--they just have ...

Home Vs Hospital
Nov 01, 2010

Was laid off in April.  Have a couple offers from transcription companies, and one from a clinic which is part of a huge school/hospital system in our area, (which actually is through a temp agency).  There are only 2 full-time NP's and a handlful of part-time NP's.  The hospital job is a 45-minute drive, 1-way, in light traffic.  Pay to start is $13, but if this temp goes to permanent, potential is much greater.  The clinic is open M-F, 8-4, closed holidays.&n ...
