Hospital Job? - Hunter

Posted: May 14, 2011

Just curious if anyone has a remote (long-distance) position with a hospital.  If so, did you have to work inhouse initially before being able to go home or not?

My last employer (the current one MTSO I work for stinks so bad I don't even consider them an employer!) was a hospital that was part of a chain.  Of 50 MTs, there was one in Canada, one in Mexico, and one in China.  However, I'm fairy certain that they were Americans who lived locally and then subsequently moved.

I did a few years ago. Yes, had to work in-house - Backwards Typist

initially because of training but after that, worked at home.

I was an employee but had to leave because of illness in the family, then was called for IC position at home. Tried to get back on as employee but left after waiting 6 more years because I needed insurance, or else I'd still be there. HIM wouldn't hire me employee status unless I worked 2nd shift, which I couldn't do...and she knew it.

Working remotely for hospital - CMT

I work remotely for a hospital. I did work in house before I went home to work, but now I think new people only have to train for a short time in house. We have over 80 transcriptionists and we all work at home. I believe they do want us all to live at least in the same state (Michigan), and we are required to come in once a month for meetings. We are paid hourly just as if we were in house. We call in to punch in at the start and end of our shift. We are required to work an 8 hour shift within a 12-hour timeframe. We have to get a certain amount of production while we are punched in, and we cannot work off the clock, but that is not difficult since we never run completely out of work. We get all of the regular hospital benefits, and we are employees of the hospital. It works out great, and turnover is very low. I have been there 17 years, and there are many others who have been there 20 years, 30 years, and even longer.

Me too - Jackie

You described my situation to a tee. When we rarely hire a new transcriptionist, they train in house for a short time and then they go home to work. They are picky, picky about who is hired, so it usually takes IS longer to get their computer ordered and all set up to hospital specs than it does for the transcriptionist to be fully trained. We also have to to commute into the hospital about once a month for a face to face departmental meeting. We have scheduled shifts we are required to work now, but are thinking about the 8 hours in a 12 hour period thing. Our turnover is very low also.

Same here. Train at hospital, work at home. - deb

Thanks for the responses. Actually they describes my former hospital employments.

I was just curious -- in this day and age of GoToMeeting, etc. -- if anyone was hired by a hospital in another state and then trained remotely?
Curious - do your hospitals provide your PC... - anon4

footpedal, etc?
Yup - Jackie

PC, footpedal, headphones...it's all their equipment. The only thing I bought myself was a set of "real" speakers that I can plug my headphones into because I don't think the volume control in the PC goes loud enough for some of the dictators that dictate from across the room (rolling my eyes here) and I also got myself an ergonomic keyboard and wireless mouse.
EMPLOYERS are SUPPOSED to provide all equipment... - LegalEagle

It's ICs who have to supply their own equipment. When an employee, the equipment is supposed to be provided by the employer.

These companies who are hiring people as employees and then demanding that they supply their own equipment are breaking the rules!!
Check your facts. Mechanics, carpenters, plumbers, etc have to have their own tools. - Union Wife

They are employees and have to supply their own equipment. The unions know the laws and wouldn't risk it being illegal.

Check your facts before you give advice or spout off.
We aren't mechanics, carpenters, or plumbers! - LegalEagle

The above are considered TRADESMEN. That's why they have a UNION.

We are not TRADESMEN, although we do have a craft. I have never, ever seen an EMPLOYER of an MT expecting them to supply ANY of the equipment, software, etc. to perform the job, and there is a REASON for that!
OH NO???? - Really??
[ In Reply To ..]
Not all of these MTSO's supply equipment, which I'm sure you are aware. Employees, yes, employees of some of the MTSO's are expected to supply their own computers, footpedals, Dictaphone (if one is required), headsets, and even some software such as Microsoft Word. You may get some tax write offs, but the cost is still coming out of these employees' pockets. You've NEVER heard of that?
I'm guessing you're new to the field then? nm - MT

Hospital Pay--is This A JOKE?
Dec 30, 2009

Okay, so halfway out of curiosity, I applied to my local hospital, which is a large regional hospital, for an MT job.  They wanted a "seasoned" MT with CMT, who transcribes 250 lines an hour.  Okay, I thought, they might actually compensate better than I think since they have well-defined high standards.  WRONG!  They are offering $11.35 AN HOUR!  What a slap in the face!  You get a whole extra dollar if you work 2nd shift.  What an insult--they just have ...

Home Vs Hospital
Nov 01, 2010

Was laid off in April.  Have a couple offers from transcription companies, and one from a clinic which is part of a huge school/hospital system in our area, (which actually is through a temp agency).  There are only 2 full-time NP's and a handlful of part-time NP's.  The hospital job is a 45-minute drive, 1-way, in light traffic.  Pay to start is $13, but if this temp goes to permanent, potential is much greater.  The clinic is open M-F, 8-4, closed holidays.&n ...

Working For A Hospital

Does anybody out there work at home for a hospital, not a transcription company.  How do they handle the running out of work situation - do they expect you to use your PTO or take it without pay.  Are they more flexible with scheduling - I was hoping for some place that might say you have to work 8 hours a day anytime between say 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.  Do they still pay by the line, and less for speech recognition? ...
