Contingency job in hospital - Old Broad

Does anyone know how it works if you are hired as contingent in a hospital? Do you have to have certain hours you are available? There's a contingent transcription job I'm thinking of applying to just to get my foot in the door at a local hospital, but I work full time elsewhere (still MT), so I wonder if this would work.

[ In Reply To ..].l.you'll be called in to work the times when coverage is always short -- weekends, swing shift, holidays.
It's a great way to get on more permanently with a hospital, if that's what you'd like. Assuming the quality of your work and work ethic are good, you're practically a shoe-in when an opening comes up.
I don't know if it's the case everywhere, but in this neck of the woods, one is eligible for full benefits at just 24 hours a week (permanent part-time, not p.r.n.).

[ In Reply To ..]I'm hoping to get into our local hospital. Right now it is very slow and they can't hire anyone but hopefully in a few months I will get a position there. It sounds exciting to me as I have never done hospital transcription. Looking forward to learning new things. The benefits are good for 20 hours a week also.

[ In Reply To ..]FYI, If you haven't already, I would let the hospital know you've never done hospital transcription (I'm assuming it's going to be all acute care), so they know you'll need a lot of one-on-one training. If they're willing to do that, that's great. Most places do not.
Good luck. I would do anything to get a hospital position. I have 13 years actue care experience, but our hospitals just don't seem to be hiring.

[ In Reply To ..]ALL of my local hospitals (in the immediate vicinity, within my city) have outsourced their transcription with only ONE exception. I worked there for almost 10 years and left there because that manager is such a "witch with a B." No way would I ever go back there!
So you gals are lucky that you even have local hospitals to consider. Many of us do not.

[ In Reply To ..]Yes, they know I have not done acute care. I passed the testing and they still seem to be interested in me and training me. The problem now is that there is not enough work to justify hiring another MT but they plan on it picking up in the next two months. I believe I am trainable andI believe in myself and I know I can do the work. There are doctors who have outsourced here and hated the results so they brought the work back to town and the hospital is the same. I am not a fan of working for a company and am glad they chose to not use them.
